Drowned in Sound Albums of the Year 2010: 75-51

And lo! the end of year listing season did grumble along in earnest, not unlike a half-born tiger cub with bleeding paws, gazing confusedly at a myriad of conflicting reflections in a smashed-up mirror. And to add to the muddle of album lists, along comes DiS' music-streaming steam train, with more albums than usual.

Yes, yes, yes, the pedants amongst you will have already noted that DiS usually does a top 50 albums of the year list. How-bloody-ever, 2010 has seen the release of rather a lot of much-loved records, so many in fact that we have been somewhat forced, due to not wanting to leave too many fantastic and much-loved records out, to do a rollover in order to highlight a few more must own/investigate records. Of course, some of your favourites might not make the cut and we probably could have done a top 250 albums this year, such is the quality of music available but this, is, it, the albums of 2010, as selected by the folks behind DiS. But before we reveal the first few of our 75, here's an informative but very quick bit of house-keeping...

Some Stats

Forty-eight Drowned in Sound staff members and contributions took part in this voting process. They picked 236 different albums between them. 138 albums only featured in one top 10 and several people's number 1 album didn't feature in anyone else's lists. This year was easily one of the most lacking in consensus we've ever had at DiS. But we'll get into that later in the week.

How Was This List Picked

This wasn't done based on votes. What happened was:
1) We reviewed records all year long, as per normal.
2) Three weeks ago I asked all our staff to email me their top 10 albums of the year. There were no rules but they were asked to vote honestly and made aware that there was no point voting tactically as scores would not to be totted up. This is not a democracy nor a dictatorship but some half-way house between a committee and whatever not having everyone's 8th favourite album and no-one's number 1 album top the list is. However, I did ask for words and investigated any records people passionately argued DiS readers would love (some of which went onto our Lost 10 of 2010 list).
3) Whilst lists began to come in, I (DiS founder, Sean Adams) kept a little tally and made a rough list, trying to second guess popular opinions.
4) I then looked at threads on the boards discussing albums of the year and also at the staff tally counts, honing in on records in people's top 2 and re-arranged my initial list, to make something agreeable and representative of 'our world' for want of a better phrase.
5) I sent around a first, second, third and forth draft of the list to DiS senior staff, adapting each with bits of feedback.
6) And now, after a few rows and several beers, here it is.

Next....

Tomorrow we'll be revealing each staff members number 1 album, which is rather revealing but offers little clue as to who tops this year's list. On Thursday you'll see 50-10 and then on Friday afternoon we'll finally stop teasing you and show you the whole bloody list, complete with some thoughts on the year that was. And if you stick around 'til Monday, we have a little guide to 2011 to whet your appetite. Wendy's singles of the year will follow shortly after. And then we're sort of running away early for Christmas as there has been barely time for a holiday all year.

In The Meantime...

You can click all the handy review links above to read more about the records. You can also listen to SPOTIFY PLAYLIST SAMPLER featuring a track from each of the records here. Sadly the Eno album isn't up there so you'll have to make do with a track from Shutter Island, and the Daft Punk track is only available for premium users. We'll also be embedding a track from each to our audio-only Tumblr drownedinsoundcloud.com. Plus I'm also attempting to write a short tweet-length review of nearly every record suggested by our staff on a new twitter account @seaninrcrds.

DiScuss:: Surprises? Guesses for the top 10 changed? Anything you'd like to say to encourage folks to listen to any of the above?

My top 5 albums all place in the bottom 25 of this list.

Interesting...
well it is to me, anyway.

"everyone's 8th favourite album and no-one's number 1 album top the list is. "

There are scoring systems would get round this problem.

not really

as you can't account for marketing. the only way to do it is to ask for top 3s or top 5s, as often, try as they might, people don't love more than 5 albums a year or explore far beyond the heavily marketed or "must hear" albums of the year. one staff member only submitted 3 records as they hadn't listened to any others from this year, and they didn't even particularly like their number 3 choice. admittedly, this is rare but without listening to and exploring 500+ records a year, which few people have the luxury of time/money to do.

well, the past couple of years have been done this way too

just haven't explicitly said so. this year i've become increasingly hating of the date-led way that music's merit is being judged by. popularity usually just leads to agreeability, rather than the exceptional but i hope, as you'll see, we've adapted the old system to create a list that represents what DiS has been about for the past 12months (and past 10 years too)

5 albums a year is one every two or three months

OK maybe there'd be a discussion over what constituting loving a record entails exactly but there's plenty of middle ground between only liking two records a year and hearing 500+ I don't think a music publication would be going way over the top asking for it's writers to name 20 albums they've enjoyed a lot over a 12 month period.

On the scoring point the problem on a list of 5 records is it's essentially irrelevant where they place if you just say 1st=5, 2nd=4 etc as the final position would be driven by number of votes over actual placement. This is obviously exacerbated depending on the size of the ballot and if you did accept ballots of say 40 records then 2*19th place would outscore a #1 which is the kind of thing you are suggesting you want to avoid this. To do this you award points on a sliding scale from 100, 50, 20 or whatever you want for #1 and take into account the size of the ballot and the number of people that vote. This neither rewards solitary or near lone picks nor rewards an album that got tacked on to the lower end of people's lists.

The one I've been using for a while now is

(100*(1+(Nv/Vmax)))/(X+(Nv/Vmax))

Where;
100 is the number of points that we want all #1s to receive
Nv is the number of voters that vote
Vmax is the limit to the size of their ballot
X is where they voted <whatever> in their list.

[/nerd]

seems fair enough

idiosyncrasies: Beach House seems low (I grew to love it over the year), good to see the Godlike Bryan Ferry on the list, I'd stick Interpol a lot higher but I know I'm out on a limb on that one

Gorillaz SO LOW

madness

Women and Beach House criminally under-placed, this is an outrage! These two would be in my top 10 :)

Beach House, at 74

I knew I wasn't going to agree with everything but MY GOD. My second favourite of the year.

2 of my top 3 in here

Walkmen and beach house - very surprised they're this low.

Below 'Interpol'

That's just a slap in the face.

Did Harry Hills

Grrrrr

Did Harry Hill's album release make it in time for this list?

I'm going to bask in the glory of the list as a whole

and not worry so much about the placement until we get to the Top 20. T'was a brill year for music! Much love for DiS, the staff and goofballs that frequent the music boards...

(Erm, except Everything Everything: that record is a bit shit, eh?)

The Walkmen are way too low in this list

easily in my top 5. Gorillaz also charted rather low.

I'd also tip my hat to the system of choosing this list

because even if I, like many others I'm sure, think Beach House is a "tad" low, where as a record I only gave 5/10 to (Bryan Ferry, click the link up there, g'wan)made it to 51, I think in the end the process makes for a end-of-year list that is more representative of DiS AS A WHOLE. Plus if we didn't disagree on stuff there would be no point in this comments section etc.

Do a DiS users poll

Yeah yeah I know subjective aware I won't agree with everything blah zzz

But Beach House at 74? You motherfuckers

the users always do their own poll on the board. i started one but i think it's being scrapped in favour of top 5s rather than top 10s. and i got in too early (doing research for this, in earnest)

Cant believe

Laura Marlings I Speak Because I Can, didn't even make the top 50 never mind the top 10.

TOP 10 FOR YOU! FOR YOU! BUT THIS ISN'T SUGARCUBE'S LIST!

IT'S DROWNED IN SOUND'S LIST!!!

I loves me some Plastic Beach

No, it's not the 'best' album of the year, but I've derived a lot of enjoyment out of that disc over the year. I can put it on any time, in any mood, and pick a new favorite track.

indeed

</it wouldn't make my top 100 list>

Beach House Bellend

Hi
Im one the "bellend's" that rather liked the Beach House LP and am surprised that it has that number next to it, but what gives. I love it, i love the Robyn Lp I loved the Pantha Du Prince and Holy Fuck LPs and TNP where they place in said list is fun yet academic.

That voting system is really beyond me would a DIS representative like to come round for coffee and biscuits to explain it to me? Its a shame about Interpol is it me or have they dropped the ball this year.

it's pretty cool you're doing a top 75 this year.

gives room to those really good albums like Gonjasufi, Matthew Dear, even Wild Nothing that wouldn't made it into the top 50 but are great.

A little surprised to see Beach House where it is (eyebrows raised straight away)

Always seemed to be quite a lot of love for it on DIS over many a thread. Might even make my own top 5.

To be fair about Beach House

this often happens with DiS EOY lists. In '08 Fleet Foxes were 40something and last year xx was in the bottom three, so I believe?

How it goes.

beach house numero uno

or twoso for me
but looking forward to high mystery jets, deerhunter and tallest man on earth inclusions ta x

Not "bottom three", though Top 50.

If a record makes the list then it's a good thing.

imho fwiw, these should all be higher:

Wild Nothing
Surfer Blood
The Walkmen
Twin Shadow

erm...

Weezer?? In the top 50? I think every single one of these bands here are better than Weezer
