I found this review a wonderfully written piece of prose, but a bit of a Jackson Pollock painting, and however hard I look at it, I'm still not really clear what the new Sonic Youth album sounds like... have they moved on? Sideways? Are they trying to experiment in the context of today, or could this record have existed with the technology/knowledge that existed within the band 15 years ago? Are there any SONGS, or is is more instrumentally oriented? Is it a new record for a new decade, or a good quality Sonic Youth record that explores much the same territory as the rest of their records? Saying Sonic Youth have done an 'art' album is a bit like saying Lucian Freud has done a painting... of COURSE they've done an art album.. that's what they DO... The reviewer is evidently a fan... but I'm interested to know... will this in any way appeal to people who AREN'T diehard fans?

‘‘Sonic Youth have made a record with some sing-a-long songs and some experimental ones too. Mostly sing-a-longs, though some of this record sounds like it could’ve been made by Sonic Youth when they were writing stuff like ‘‘The Sprawl’’ and ‘‘Crème Brulee’’, but Still A Bit Poppier. O! They're getting a bit old! Woo! It is nice! It is grungey! They write lyrics that are about Stuff Today and More Stuff. If you like Sonic Youth you will like this! If you’ve never heard them, but like Yo la Tengo, Blonde Redhead and experimental guitar music, then give them a try!’’

If you like Murray Street then you will love Sonic Nurse. It sounds almost like an extension of that album. I really love both.

It's too hard to say whether this will appeal to those who are die hard fans because Sonic Youth are the closest thing to an instituion in themselves. Most alternative rock fans have already heard them and made their minds up about them, therefore by relaesing albums under the name Sonic Youth, the record has already been judged in a sense. If they want to be judged for the record itself they need to be really fresh and change direction slightly- but for them to do that is asking a band who completely re-invented music once to do it again- that's a tall order. It would be the same to ask Radiohead to take another great leap into the aural unknown. So, I hope this records great and fresh and I'll get back to you... Err, feeling quite meandering and vague today!

Haha, those first few paragraphs were so awful I just gave up with bothering my hole to read the rest of that review. As big a pile of bilge as I've read on here in yonks. Balls like "blissful halcyon" towards the end as i held my finger on pagedown and others' responses don't suggest it improved phenomenally either. I'll find an actual, good, *review* of it somewhere to get some opinions on it... (even Chris in the replies admits it doesn't serve any review-purpose..)

I'm frightened. Can any band's nineteenth album be this good? Especially considering they said it sounds like Murray Street, which is not exactly praise.
However, it's SY, and by my lights I'll try to buy it if only to say rock is not dead.

Heard the sampler the other day and was suitably impressed - it's kinda mellow, but with the normal sonic stuff you'd expect after all these years - definitely as good as Murray street (which was damn fine), if not better.

No matter how much you want sonic youth to still be important, or relevant, they are not, and won't be again. There is nothing new on this album, this sounds like a band who are aging with grace, but since when was grace exiting? The band have a sound, and that sound is good, it sounded incredible in the early 90's and it still sounded good on Murray Street, but new ideas, the lack thereof has been something that sonic youth has been painfully short on recently.
This is no five star album. To give it such praise is an insult to the bands previous accomplishments. Daydream Nation is a 5 star album. Washing machine is a 5 star album. Evol is a 5 star album. Sister is a 5 star album.
To even flirt with the idea that this collection of songs is in the same stratosphere as those records is delusional.
It's a nice album, the band aren't exactly pissing on their legacy like some other artists have been doing recently, but don't try and fool yourself into thinking this is more important (or better) than it actually is.

In this writer’s opinion, the LP is an extension of Sonic Youth’s artistic legacy.
The review actually expounds – something which you’d have detected if your brains didn’t consist of swiss cheese - that the LP * comes close* to being a landmark album on par with Daydream Nation on an artistic merit. At no point did it suggest that Nurse had scaled the mantle where Daydream Nation resides or suggest that SY were EVER going to be that culturally ‘‘relevant’’ again (and how completely fucking numbskulled you’d have to be to even assume such a thing), and… as for your other trite observations, in those relatively inconsequential realms of ‘‘relevance’’ and ‘‘importance’’, the review was written from the perspective of a person listening to the album For What It Is today/three thousand years ago/a hundred years into the future; a brilliant exposition of densely textured, absorbing sounds, the knife-edge, rapier-satire of Moore’s and Gordon’s reflections on A Modern World and *duh* multifaceted, winding song structures broken by noisejams. LIKE SONIC YOUTH DO. This warranted five stars.

I get the feeling that a vast majority of the people that make these prosaic, futile and ultimately regressive comments on this website are trainspotting, vinyl-hording dullards who, on all accounts, come across as emotional and intellectual dwarves.

Oh dear. Just to set you straight on this one Matthew dearest. People don't dislike your review because they're stupid, or they "don't get it", or they aren't as intelligent as you. They don't like it because, aside from a couple of nicely turned phrases, it's the worst kind of fifth form purple prose imaginable. You write with the hubris of a black-clad teenager convinced that all the squares and the "dullards" just don't *understand*. Please, for the sake of all of us who remember with a shudder and a cringe when we used to think and write like you, get over the sub-Lester Bangs thing.

It took a number of reads, but I get it (just) and would just like to say that SONIC NURSE and last album MURRAY STREET are the best 2 Sonic Youth albums since DAYDREAM NATION and GOO and aint' that good.
Did anyone else see their performance at ATP on here? It was the best Sonic Youth gig I have ever seen (and I've seen plenty). Kim Gordon spinning around screaming "Drunken Butterfly" is surely one of the greatest sights a man can see! They are a band enjoying themselves again.

There is no need to be facetious... it makes you look silly. I own Sonic Youth music (which I like a lot). I know how much Sonic Youth stole from Glenn Branca (who I like a lot), and also like Can (even more than the others), who were screwing around with dissonance in 1968.
When you overpack a piece with simile and metaphor it can become hard to see whatever core of plain english lies beneath... and so it takes a long time to read... perhaps in common with much of the audience, my attention span for staring at text on a computer screen is pretty damn small... and so I'm not personally keen on things that I cannot skim-read. I have no need to read about metaphors about Sonic Youth... I KNOW what they sound like... they've been around for decades... what I DID want to know was whether they'd moved on to some new territory... which you didn't tell me in your review.
Dissonance was experiemented with in classical in the beginning of the 20th century, and to my mind, no guitar band has even come within a million miles of the way, say, Stravinsky used it... but maybe Sonic Youth aren't ever going to be the band to take such experimentation to the next level. In June, ATP04 currators Sonic Youth release their 19th album entitled 'Nurse'. Talkin' to Rolling Stone, Thurston said the vibe is "Bare Trees-era Fleetwood Mac jamming with Jealous Again-era Black Flag... In a way, the sound is a marriage of those two things, just when you're relaxed, your speakers kind of fry."
There's a track called 'Peace Attack,' which he told Rolling Stone that it represents "America was pushed into war against everybody's wishes except the President's and his own cabinet's, so it's just about the whole co modification of peace. [President Bush] was delivering this thing that was like a McDonald's hamburger. It was like 'McPeace' to me. He's gonna attack people with this thing he calls 'peace.' There was something so malevolent about it."

Don't know what the hell its going to sound like, the reviewer says Daydream Nation, you guys rekon Murray Street (probably closer to the truth).
Whatever it sounds like its probably going to be good, and excellent if you get off on the 'Youths art punk stuff.

Booyah! At the end of the day, Thurston Moore could piss on a mic and the end result would still be miles better than almost everything else that gets released this year. In fairness to the review, almost every other other critic has said that it's probably one of their best records since 'Daydream Nation'. But then in my opinion, 'Murray Street' was up there with their best too. Anywhoo....enough of my sad, dull SY critique.

So, you when you read a music mag (mmm, let's say, nme), you don't wince / get fucked off / become even the teensiest bit annoyed when you just happen upon a hilariously/chronically dire review, not whatsoever (nor even at how blatantly clueless and knowledgeless a review's press release-cribbing author may be).....not ever.....cos it's just how they chose to write their review. Of course.

Yes with journalistic hyperbole like that, you're really going to capture an audience. The whole of the first paragraph was crap. Ridiculous similes and metaphors. It's not Proust, its Sonic Youth criticism. And that classic trick of using French phrases to sound clever. We speak English! Oh and the shortening of 'because' to 'cuz'. Wonderful writing (by the bonkers Mr Gregory) and Wonderful Critiquing (by several posters on here). This thread represents the best of DiS. Fuck futile arguments over Keane or other such bland non-intellectual noneties . It doesn't matter and'll only end in a stalemate.

I'd much rather read an arty-farty, thesaurus-utilising, allusion laden creation like this (and that's praise-not criticism- despite how it may sound) than the bland journalism by numbers found in certain indie-bopper rags where the writers only got their jobs through Cuntish bourgeois nepotism not because of any talent.
Matthew Gregory's journalism is indeed pretentious and self-congratulatory. But it is also innovative, irreverent, highly original and adeptly astute.
If he's not written the new 'Naked Lunch' by the time he's 30 it'll only because he can't write in a straightjacket. Once again, high-praise to the madman.

1. I like how reading NME is somehow the most original insult people can think of in these forums. Yes, NME is shit, move on.
2. While I agree that the review gave up nothing to suggest anything about the content of the album, it was nice to see a review that didn't just rattle off tracklistings and dry information. Not everyone's cup of tea, granted, but there are plenty of other reviews of the CD available.

anyway, reason i post this is because i, quite bizarrely, bought my copy of Sonic Nurse off eBay and it comes from Canada. what i'd like to know is why my track 4 is called "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle hand cream". was there some kind of strange legal thing mariah carey about the song name up in Canada?? must say i'm quite confused and the song name change seems pointless.

I've liked Sonic Youth for less than a year, and I've heard almost all of their albums in that small space of time (me and my friend completely obsess over them). I am at the moment listening to "Nurse". There's something so different about Sonic Youth than there is to any other band, regardless of who invented dissonance first. Last year, I was obsessed with Nirvana, but after spending all this time pondering, listening to, and learning to understand and appreciate Sonic Youth, it just made everything else I've ever heard seem bland and pointless. Their take on music is absolutely incredible, and I just love to sit back and get lost amongst the sounds they create. If you ask me, I think "Nurse" is just as catchy and inviting as previous Sonic Youth masterpieces such as Washing Machine, Goo (yes, it was brilliant), Sister, Experimental Jet Set, Murray Street etc. Sonic Youth songs manage to tap into emotions when I listen to them, and "Nurse" manages to tap into a feeling of euphoria - espeically on tracks such as "The Dripping Dream" (which is in my opinion is the best track on the album), and "I Love You Golden Blue". This is a great record; it makes me nod my head, and that's what's important to me. And does anyone agree that, despite being a great album, and bearing in mind the equipment situation, NYC Ghosts is their worst album?

My name is Ben, 19 years old - I'm an undergraduate of Norwich University, England. Just caught my eye that you like Glenn Branca, Sonic Youth and, most interestingly, Can. These bands happen to be my favourite bands of all time. I have almost all of each respective bands music (And Branca's Ascension is an arresting listen). So we are on a similar level of taste it seems! Sorry if this may all seem rather odd and upfront of me, but it is most rare to hear someone other than my two best friends Tom and Lukas mention SY and Can in the same breath. Er, do you play any instruments? I am in a three piece with those guys I mentioned and we would desperately like a fourth member (whatever instrument) to play music with. Out of interest, I also listen to Phillip Glass, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, New York No-Wave music, The Shangri-Las, The Velvet Undergound, Kraftwerk, various Bernard Hermann soundtracks - Taxi Driver's is incredible - but Can's album Future Days is my most guarded posession.
