It's Friday and on DiS throughout 2009 that meant we did a Spotify playlist to compliment our editorial (archived here). Yeah, it is not unlike a covermount cassette wot you used to get on Melody Maker (RIP). Simply CLICK THIS LINK and you'll be whisked to the founder and current editor of this websites top 40 songs of the year playlist. They're not in any particular order per se, more-so organised into a listenable flow - yeah, not unlike a proper mixtape, just without all that pause button bashing ballache. »

I have chosen 100 singles I really do implore you to get your sticky mits on. If I had had to put them in order I would have had a breadvan, so I am sure you will excuse the absence of cheap - and vaguely pointless - countdowning. »

So, what a year it has been for news. Hasn't it? Above average? There was some good stuff, right? Yes, there was, and in light of my first six months or so doing the news for Drowned in Sound, I thought it'd be a good idea to run through SOME of the very most exciting and interesting and sometimes "WTF!" news stories of the year. Or at least nobody stopped me when I mooted this suggestion...I guess that gives me free reign then?»

So, that was 2009? Was it a great year for music? A high watermark? Only time will tell but there have been some triumphant, innovative and bold records released and cherished in 2009 and we hope our list of the top 50 of the year reflects this.»

In this set of musicians' favourite five albums of 2009 we have folky-popsters Slow Club, dreamy-fuzzy-lovely antipodeans The Ruby Sons and tear-your-face-off types Pulled Apart by Horses. These 'mixtapes' or, er, DiStapes, are fairly self-explanatory, they have a-postcard-from-'09 intros followed by 9 songs, so intro blurbage ends abruptly... »

Every year we ask our staff to submit their records of the year and every year, writers put records in their lists that seem to have been somewhat overlooked both within the realm of DiS and/or across the board. Rather than leave these records as forgotten footnotes, last year we launched our imaginatively titled Lost 8 of '08 (see the 8 highlighted records here) and this year it returns, one year older 'n' wiser, as the Lost 9 of '09. Once again this little list intends to do much the same neck-out-sticking for some of our staff's personal favourites. Regulars to this series may notice that this is technically the tenth entry; well, frankly, what to do when an artist had two overlooked records this year? WE GIVE THEM A SPECIAL BONUS MENTION, THAT'S WHAT.»

Bradford Cox may get all the plaudits, and the attention, but The Floodlight Collective showed the dazzling talent of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt. It's hewn from roughly the same cloth (the first ten seconds of 'Redoakway' sounds just like 'River Card'), wreathed in dreams and a certain hallucinatory timbre, but something here creates a stronger power. »

Yet, things haven't even peaked for them with this record as they'll be headlining the NME tour in Jan/Feb 2010. »
