"'Inhaler' almost didn't make it onto the album": DiS meets Yannis from Foals
Next month sees the release of Foals third album, Holy Fire. With a heavy promotional schedule ahead of them before their mammoth worldwide tour commences in Australia next week, DiS caught up with frontman Yannis Philippakis. Here's what he had to say. »
"Facebook 'likes' don't sell records": DiS meets Holy Esque
Later this evening Holy Esque will play as though their lives depend on it to a full house of mostly open-mouthed punters at Sheffield's Queens Social Club. Beforehand, DiS caught up with the quiet and unassuming four-piece post-soundcheck.»
Time to put the dog down? Why I'm going to miss HMV...
A couple of years back I found myself jobless and took a part time gig in the Bromley branch of HMV to cover the Christmas period. It was mental; hugely busy every day, but everyone there was lovely and I genuinely enjoyed myself, particularly as working in a record shop had been one of those things I always felt you had to do at some point. The problem is, I wasn’t working in a record shop. Not really. This wasn’t High Fidelity; it wasn’t even Empire Records.»
Close Knits: Beyond the noise pop pale #1
Here's the first of a new monthly column celebrating the sunny delights of DIY fuzz-pop, noise-pop, post-punk and straight down the line, knitwear endorsed indie-pop. We'll be taking the bittersweet, the shambling, the fey, the angular, the adrenalin fuelled, the rough around the edges, the anarcho, the slacker, the young at heart and the jangle all the way and waving them emphatically in your face, should you care to listen.»
"I don’t believe in mumbo jumbo" - DiS meets Richard Hawley
2012 was going to be a make or break year for Richard Hawley as he released his most divisive album to date, Standing At The Sky’s Edge. We spoke to Richard just back from a dog walk in his hometown of Sheffield, in good spirits and full of expletives about the phenomenal success of the record, the current state of English culture and politics and why he has no time for ‘Strictly Comef*ckwit’»
This Week's Singles 14.01.13: Teleman, Everything Everything, Factory Floor, Villagers
Single of the Week! Teleman - 'Christina’ (Moshi Moshi) The Guardian have called 'Christina' erotic - a fusty choice of words that puts me in mind of naughty etchings designed to provoke the nethers of those too squeamish for actual, haitch-dee»
Where Was He Then? David Bowie's Not-So 'Lost' Decade
The current received wisdom is that following the tour for 2002’s Heathen he fell off the map, but the weird thing about Bowie’s ‘lost decade’ is how little of it was lost....»
"We’ve been alienating millions of people the whole time" - DiS meets Dutch Uncles
Marple’s Dutch Uncles have a quality to them that’s rarer than you'd think – for a guitar band at least. Like Wild Beasts, Menomena, and only a few others doing the rounds at the moment, you can take one of their songs and listen to it ten, fifty, a hundred times, and unless you’re a musician yourself (and a pretty highly-trained one at that) you still won’t be able to fathom how it works.»

DIS does Eurosonic: Nooderslag Tips + Finnish playlist
There’s a Finnish focus to this years Eurosonic Noorderslag event, which kicks off today in a far flung corner of the Netherlands. The festival, which is a bit like SXSW if you substitute the Texas sunshine for Holland in January, acts as a superb annual showcase and cross pollination of some of Europes best and most hyped new acts, attracting industry bods from across the continent. John Peel was a regular attendee, and that’s as glowing an endorsement for a focus on new music as you could find.»
Science Fiction & Sylver Tongue: DiS meets Charlotte Hatherley
Charlotte Hatherley likes her science fiction. “Look at Blade Runner,” she says, sat in a deserted Islington bar. “I mean, what’s the story in Blade Runner? It’s so fucking simple. 1984? it’s just a love story really. That’s the thing with »

"Nothing makes me happier than experimenting with music & writing songs" - DiS meets Melody's Echo Chamber
One of last year's brightest discoveries arrived in the shape of Melody's Echo Chamber, the self-titled long player from the solo project of Parisian chanteuse Melody Prochet. Currently holed up in Paris working on songs for the follow-up, DiS caught up with the amiable Ms Prochet in the offices of Domino Records.»
