Former Wilco member Jay Bennett dead, aged 45

Former Wilco member Jay Bennett has died in his sleep aged 45. A statement on Undertow's website simply reads: "We are profoundly saddened to report that our friend died in his sleep last night. Jay was a beautiful human being who will be missed."

The multi-instrumentalist joined Wilco in 1994 and worked on the albums Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and the Mermaid Avenue collections with Billy Bragg.

He left the band in 2001 after various disputes with band leader Jeff Tweedy. Earlier this month Bennett attempted to sue Tweedy, and also announced that he needed a hip-replacement which he could not afford.

As well as being a member of Wilco, he was a founder of Titanic Love Affair, who recorded and released three albums from 1991-1996 and also released five solo albums, the latest of which - Whatever Happened I Apologize - was released as a free download in November last year.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times Wilco could not be reached for comment, but friend Edward Burch reported that Wilco's John Sirratt was "broken up" by the news. The cause of death is still unknown, but an autopsy is due to be carried out.

UPDATE: Jeff Tweedy said:

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him - as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time."

Rest in peace, Jay.

bloody hell

what did he die of?

read the article...

"The cause of death is still unknown, but an autopsy is due to be carried out."

What did he die of?

Boredom perhaps, after falling to sleep listening to the coma inducing Blue Sky Blue.

.

Probably not the most tasteful place to make a cheap joke about *Sky Blue Sky.

shocked by this

did anyone see 'i am trying to break your heart' the documentary? i felt quite sorry for him in it. died in his sleep at 45 seems like a really raw deal to me.

I saw it

I saw it and you know I really never could forgive what jeff Tweedy did to Jay. First of all his getting kicked out of the band seemed entirely unnecessary. Second of all Jeff did it publicly on film. It just doesn't get more heartless than that. And then the film got named what it did as if to brag about what he did! I can't say all this doesn't affect my enjoyment of Wilco's music without Jay Bennett. I could also say for all practical purposes Jeff killed Jay by kicking him out of the band. I wonder if now that Jay is dead if Jeff has any remorse at all for what he did. Jeff Tweedy is king of the schmucks in my book.

Is this supposed to be serious?

^ steady on edscerbo!

I HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM

WHY DID JEFF KICK JAY OUT OF THE BAND?

this is sad

especially having watched I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. RIP.

i think yr totally wrong

if you watch the film yr talking about, you'd see that him being kicked out was necessary cos they were arguing all the time. and, one of the "plotlines" of the film is how 2 people start a band and clash over direction till one of them goes, so complaining that its publicy on film is silly cos thats the point.and yr comment about the title is like some wierd conspiracy theory that only you believe in. dont bring yr hatred to this funeral, man. whatever happened (it isnt going to be natural causes is it..), those guys were real close and i bet jeff is more cut up about it than you.

Dickhead.

What a shame.

Summerteeth is one of my all time favourite records. It'll be on repeat today..

...

The band didn't have a hand in editing or titling the film, so it's not like Tweedy plannned to fire him at that time.

The impression I got in the movie was that Jay may have been a bit coked-up a lot of the time, too. Or he may just have been a nervy, neurotic character - either way, I can see why he was kicked out. Talented guy but it just wasn't working any more.
