It’s not entirely unobvious that the king and queen of unsettling rock sleaze, Mr Homme and Ms Harvey would eventually gravitate towards each other, but judging by the results, Mars and Venus do not naturally align.
The Desert Sessions is an impressive concept, usually executed very well, but to cut a single off it? That’s what happens when you sell your fun to Island records… So, it’s in this odd, disjointed three-minute format that we find an odd, disjointed performance, which sounds like PJ and Duncan (Josh) are singing different songs backed by the same music. Alain Johanne’s deviant, surfish guitar is ace, and Homme digs out an excellent chorus, but Harvey’s vampish, moaning vocals are misplaced and disembodied. Rather like a Desert Sessions single.
