DiScussion: what do you hope will happen in 2009?

Despite the clunking sound of the world's economy becoming slightly unnerving, there's a lot to be excited about in 2009 and we'd like to know what you're excited about. In fact, screw what you know is going to happen, let's get a bit Waynes World and follow the mantra of the great philosopher Mike Myers when he said, "if you book them, they will come..."

Three things I'd love to see happen:

At The Drive-In Reform (Please)

Usually a hiatus is a back-up plan if things don't go so well and it's fair to say that The Bedlam in Goliath wasn't exactly a high watermark moment for Mars Volta and has anyone heard anything from Sparta recently? Exactly. Wikipedia says "In June 2008, Ward stated that Sparta is "currently on hiatus and label-less," and that he will be focusing on his project, Sleepercar. We'd like to see them play a residency on various small islands, meaning that, for the price of a Glastonbury ticket, we can pilgrimage to some remote place like the Isle of Man or Cape Verde to see the band play in some special-built rock cube. Basically it'd be great to see them before they get creaky knees and can't rock it like it's Reading 1999.

Here's a quick reminder how great they were live:

LCD Soundsystem, Weezer and Muse co-curate a festival

Just imagine someone hiring a nuclear bunker and giving James Murphy and Matt Bellamy free reign to book their own ATP-style festival. Just imagine it: we'd be exposed to so much music and have things like Beck, Soulwax, Primus, Deftones and Tom Waits back to back in the evening. Then The Rapture, Phoenix, Soulwax, Colder, a reformed Le Tigre, a reformed Q and Not U and PiL will be making us dance like idiots. A Sigur Ros sunrise set will be followed by a geek-rock breakfast hosted by Rivers doing Pavement covers backed by Beirut, Conor Oberst and the ghost of Buddy Holly. Our generation needs a consolidating Woodstock-like moment to make sense of the muddle. Alternatively, will someone give me a million pounds to book a festival please?

Postal Service have a new album and do a world tour

There are few Zeitgeist records we can call our own. For them to do the whole "it's only a side-project" thing has been a tease that's gone on for far too long. C'mon Gibbard, quit milking the fruits of 'Such Great Heights' and get James Mercer, Emily Haines and Leslie Feist to email over some guest vocals. Then 'do a Radiohead' and see how quickly you can crash the internetz.

Those are my three, what would you love to see happen in a year when Obama will be 'leader of the free world', The National may have a new album and therefore pretty much everything is possible, right? Wanna see Magnetic Fields play 69 Love Songs in full at the Royal Albert Hall? Do you need someone to reform? Is there a duet that has to happen? A place where gigs should start happening again? An indie club to be resurrected? Or is all this nostalgia tripping a waste of time when there's so much great new and innovative music around?

My 2009 wishes

Is for Van Morrison to do his LA 'Astral Weeks' in full show in London (Or Liverpool if we're being extremely wishful).

Pulp to reunite.

My 2009 Wish

Regina Spektor to release a new album finally. Then play a gig in my house. Please Jim, fix this for me.

I too am pretty pumped for a possible Postal Service album

I'm also interested to see what the Arctic Monkeys are going to come up with.
Oh, and for The Kooks to fall off the face of the earth.

my 2009 wishes

1. ATDI reunion

2. Big Black reunion tour

3. Rapeman reunion tour

fuck off

muse are an awful band and, along with the Foo Fighters, epitomise everything that is wrong with modern rock.
the rest are good calls.
i'm hoping for a jawbreaker reunion, a second awesome Battles lp and some sort of supergroup popping up to melt peoples' faces.

Mine is that

the recent spate of appearances by Jeff Mangum will inspire him to reform NMH and come and play in Manchester.

Also that I go to my first ever ATP.

biggest hope

for me is that Mastodon continue to release incredible albums, and that Trail of the Dead make an unlikely return to form.

Please no ATDI reunion.

Things would be ruined.

Neutral Milk Hotel reformation

Sufjan Stevens new album&tour

End of the road somehow better than last year, and i can go this time

Tom Vek!

I wish...

Alex Turner forgets The Last Shadow Puppets and Arctic Monkeys new album is good, Emmy The Great's album is worth the wait, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Tour and that I will have enough money to buy festival tickets. Also that Tom Clarke from The Enemy wakes up one day soon and can't talk anymore.

Mrs rspce

Walked down the aisle to Such Great Heights at our wedding. Actually, to be fair it was the Iron & Wine cover. But still.

Oh

And I just want the next Thursday album to be as good as the Envy split. And Thursday to tour. Basically Thursday, all year.

whats with people wanting reunions all the time?

let bands die and move on there are to many people lookin backwards in indie circles.

LCD, Weezer and Muse would suck all together doing a festival. I don't think I could trust Weezer and Muse to pick a good band between them. And I doubt many people would be fussed at some post-disco-punk thing that LCD would pick...

Some new Postal Service would be alright, I much preffer it to any kind of Death Cab stuff. I seem to remember last year there was a mention of an album happening eventualy, but it never materialised so I won't cross my fingers.

my three

ATP move one of the weekends back to Camber Sands
MBV release new album
Pavement reform

REFUSED PEOPLE!!!

Two of them are already making music again.

I know this is the most unlikely thing in the world but just WHAT IF!!!???

-

1. Pavement reform pleasepleaseplease

2. Animal Collective's album to be as good as I currently hope/expect it to be.

3. Sonic Youth tour Britain.

I reckon 2/3 are highly possible, stephen malkmus will probably fuck up making it a perfect 3 but thats his right i guess.

i really don't understand..

the antipathy towards The Bedlam in Goliath. to me it's the record they always threatened to make, pure schizo tunes with none of the 'ethereal' twatting about. yeah, the drumming's a bit over the top but the songwriting's back to its best.

anyone?? no? just me?? fair enough.

having said this, they probably shouldn't bother making any more and an ATD-I reform would be sweeeet. and let's have Fugazi too while we're dreaming of the seemingly impossible. the 'Guy's Gone Grey' tour...?

Sebadoh

to release a new album

MY VITRIOL SECOND ALBUM

Would be nice

Jimmy Eat World to bring the Clarity tour from the US to over here

Brand New to release a new album on par with their last couple
The Dismemberment Plan to reform
More Fugazi
Lambchop to play me to sleep at night

I've a strong feeling

the latter will happen. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because I can hear brief moments of Madonna in stuff from A Place to Bury Strangers, The Big Pink and the like

1. Glastonbury headliners are Blur, Radiohead and Stevie Wonder

2. Weezer tour the UK, play 'Blue' in its entirety
3. More MBV shows.

erm 2 and 3 would be tricky together no?

unless you are planning to clone Mr Albini.

Sod it, clone him twice, then you could have Shellac touring at the same time too.

I am looking forward too

Animal collective's new material but wish for eighties matchbox b line disaster to do another gig in London...just one would be nice. That could happen before 2009 really...i dont mind.

^

Yes please.

^

Tom Vek and this also, please.

er,

internet gremlins moved my posts. Basically I'm after some Tom Vek, Sebadoh, a full Tricky/PJ Harvey album, the Prodigy album not to be naff, a Roni Size comeback (or Breakbeat Era), McLusky, Jesus Jones & The KLF to reform.

And supermarket indie needs to finally wither and die.

What actually will happen: full blown Grunge Revival.

grunge revival

fo' sho

lords.

fan.

new radiohead lp.

Well it might happen. Might. Apparently the songs are there already.

Oh yeah and MBV hopefully will come back to Japan.

wtf?

KLF?

jesus jones?

seriously???????

Chinese Democr.....

oh wait. DAMMIT!

The return of nu-metal.

Circle Takes the Square album,

another chance to see Melt-Banana, a new PRE album that's as disgusting as the last, with a tour to boot.

I'd also like to see some more British post-hardcore/spazz/whatever/misc.core bands turn up. Bands whose favourite bands are Blood Brothers, Daughters and similar.

A new Daughters album that's as disgusting as the last.

new Pogues or Shane MacGowan material

- New Teenage Fanclub record thats better than the last one.
- Jesus & Mary Chain playing a show i can actually make it to!
- Kevin Ayers to play live.

Yes.

Seriously.

I can understand folk not taking to Jesus Jones. Their loss, but it's horses or courses.

But The KLF are/were a cut above. The White Room is an astounding album.

[edit]

horses *for* courses

I'd love to see

a fully-realised Glassjaw album appear. I have my doubts that Daryl will ever realise how much GJ shits all over the 'side-projects' with which he is involved.

You'll...

...have to get in line behind Grunge and the full-on Britpop revival. That and a Trip-hop and/or Big-beat renaissance.

don't you kind of

need a decent band in each genre to spark a revival? What is good in grunge these days?

No-one said

it was gonna be any good. ;-)

Meet Me In St Louis

reunion or final gig with all members, at the drive in reunion, aereogramme reform, new oceansize album thats heavy as fuck

oh you sir...

have the right idea there...so yeah...my three would have to be:

- Refused come back
- new MBV album/tour
- Converge do a new album and play a show in Bristol

I'd like

Envy and Thursday to tour together and Circle Takes the Square to make an appearance at some point.

Jesus Jones

are still together! I think they played the Luminaire in Kilburn very recently.

Jesus Jones

are still together! I think they played the Luminaire in Kilburn very recently.

Michael Jackson

to get back together. Yes.

2009 wishlist

1. Smashing Pumpkins get a grip and reform with Iha and D'arcy and make an album worthy of sitting along side Siamese Dream.
2.People stop making a big deal out of Glasvegas.
3. Stone Roses reform.............
4. I perfect teleportation so I can attend a friend's wedding and go to Glastonbury all at once....

I'd be happy with

1. New Grinderman album
2. Alex Turner forgets about the Arctic Monkeys and makes another Last Shadow Puppets album
3. Something new and exciting happens.
