Court out: Morrissey isn't a racist any more, say Word Magazine

Remember when NME said Morrissey was a racist? Well, that’s simply not the case, a court heard today.

The backtracking in question was actually done by Word magazine, who, in their March 2008 edition, repeated allegations made in the NME issued on the 1st of December.

The Word apologised for intimations made in the closing paragraphs of an article by David Quantick. A statement read out by Morrissey’s solicitor ran thus:

It has been drawn to the Defendants’ [Word] attention that the closing paragraphs of Mr Quantick’s article could have been construed to suggest that Mr Morrissey was a racist, held racist opinions or that (as the child of migrant parents) he was a hypocrite. The article suggested that Mr Morrissey has in the past paid lip service only to anti-racism.

The Defendants never intended the article to have the meanings suggested above,” continued the former Smiths man’s solicitor John Reid; “and wish to make absolutely clear that they disassociate themselves entirely from any such inferences that might be drawn from the article.

The Defendants accept that it would be absurd to accuse Mr Morrissey of being a racist or of espousing racist views. They equally accept that Mr Morrissey is not a hypocrite, in relation in particular to the views he has expressed in the past in relation to British cultural identity.

The Defendants accept that Mr Morrissey is well known as a keen supporter of anti-racist groups and the Defendants wish to make absolutely clear that they never intended the article to suggest that Mr Morrissey was anything other than a sincere supporter of anti-racism initiatives.

The Defendants wish to take this opportunity to apologise to Mr Morrissey for any offence or distress that he may have been caused by the closing paragraphs of the article and are happy to make the position clear.

The statement was confirmed by Word’s defence lawyers.

Morrissey speaks!

I am obviously delighted with this victory and the clearing of my name in public where it is loud and clear for all to hear. The NME have calculatedly tried to damage my integrity and to label me as a racist in order to boost their diminishing circulation.

“Word magazine made the mistake of repeating those allegations, which they now accept are false and, as a result, have apologised in Open Court. I will now continue to pursue my legal action against the NME and its editor until they do the same.

NME - scared, do you think?

Buy an ice cream van

Notably, David Quantick was at the NME when they first ran the "I hear you're a racist now, Mozza" angle and has jibed about it on a semi-regular basis ever since.

"That joke isnt funny anymore"

I hope the NME have to sack their cunt of an editor soon.

quantick is a cock

the best headline i ever heard on this subject was (predictably) in the sun: 'This Alarming Man'

DQ

It is well documented that David Quantick cannot stand Morrissey, he has always used his columns/magazine pieces to find a way to have a go at Morrissey. I remember his Select column BITD seemed to mention him every other month in a negative way. This debate regarding the "racism" is getting boring, but not nearly as boring as David Quantick's continual hate campaign. Get over it DQ.

I find it weird

How some of these journalists have such hate for the man. They are like rejected lovers some of them. It's like Morrissey refused to have a pint with them and be their friend back in 1991 and they won't forget it.

Used to work with David Quantick

Attempting to use the gentlemens facilites after him was like walking into a slaughterhouse in a very hot day.

What we've learned:

Morrissey is not racist (knew that already, fuckos)

David Quantick has an anus like the holocaust.

as much as I love morrissey

I do think he is a little racist,

as much as you are probablty entitled to your opinion or whatever

I do think you are more than a little wrong

That's unfair !

He is quite tall

If you go to the Word website

they are point blank refusing to allow any posting on the issue.

They have clearly taken their ball home...

All that's happened now

is people are now trying to construe racist undertones in Morrissey's lyrics i.e. "England is mine and it owes me a living/ask me why and I'll spit in your eye".
