Official statement: BSKYB and DrownedinSound end joint venture partnership.

As many of you know, last year DrownedinSound.com signed a deal with BSkyB to support the expansion DiS and to create some new websites.

A key premise of this deal was that these new sites, alongside DiS, would support the music editorial on Sky’s portal and provide distinctive voices for different audiences, both niche and mainstream.

However, as of today, and following lengthy discussions between Sky and DiS, the decision has been made to end the joint venture partnership between Sky and DiS. This decision was based on a change in the online ambitions for both Sky and DiS. Following these changes to both Sky’s and DiS’ strategic focus, it was felt that the joint venture was not able to deliver the anticipated value to either party.

DiS will therefore return to being an independently-owned website, which means that we can now refocus on developments to improve DiS’ functionality. This is already underway and a more community-focused site is forthcoming.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the site and for your patience and understanding at this time. We look forward to embarking on a new era of DiS as we enter our eighth year.

Wow, that was quick

erm - hard to know what to think really. Just glad the site wasn't hurt in the nulling of the deal.

http://tinyurl.com/38k5mz

It had started?

Thank fucking God

for that. Hope everything is okay behind the scenes.

interesting.

Just out of interest

are the other websites still going to be active (either by DiS or as independants)
Its probably for the best the deals terminated before Murdoch got full possestion of your souls

back to the Sean/Mick Hucknall dream team then?

I didn't really notice any differences under Sky, tbh, apart from the ads, which i guess will stay anyway, no?

well

some of the people that helped to ruan it were

*run

You're celebrating...

...by hitch-hiking?

Thank Christ

You guys can have some integrity back. Those extra sites were sloppy and seemed rather forced.

this is still tbc

hopefully more news v.soon.

It's not the verb

It's the person.

^ this

Does it make any difference? I'm not sure I really care who owns things. Whatevers good for you, I hope you're all chuffed.

This is hopefully good news.

I can't tell from the statement. I do know that lots on here will be much happier even when little came of the deal in the first place except a perceived notion of "selling out". I hope the ending of the deal ain't hurt you guys too much.

LOVE LIVE DiS :D

^

Ruper Murdoch has tied Sean to a chair

and is typing on his behalf! Don't listen to him, we still will need a sky card to view DiS!

hmmm - good?

does this mean the adverts will be less annoying, or are they staying?

..

Yes, it makes a difference.

I like

rcrdlbl, is that independent of dis?

The Quietus

The Quietus is very good. I'd like to see that continue.

And i don't think the BSkyB undermined DiS' credibility either, as the site didn't change and it continued to champion the same music it always has. The connection did appear a little unseemly, but everyone has to eat...Hopefully no one lost their job as a result of the change and the site is still in good health.

DO NOT

get rid of the fosters advert on the right.

please.

the quietus is bilge mate

except for the aidan moffat column - swells is a shadow of his former self, like bontcho guentchev turning out for hendon

Cheers Stephen

The Quietus will be continuing as an independent website. More news in the next couple of weeks.

hopefully the direct line one

that takes over half of the browser will sod off

What I want to know is

Why does this news story get a full stop in the headline, whereas others don't?

Now that BSkyB isn't breathing down their neck

they're going crazy with editorial and fuckin' with house style

Bontcho Guentchev

you absolute beauty.

i thought you meant

*ruin for a moment

This is good

As long as no one behind the scenes has had their fingers burnt too much.

Glad The Quietus is staying.

It did seem like everything was expanding a little too quickly.

Good?

Good. Yeah, definitely good. Rests any administration concerns or rumours, i suppose.

How foolish of Rupert!

To give up a portal to the hip kids. The guy probably spends more on lunch than DiS. He probably couldn't stand how often the hip kids type the word "cunt".

Hopefully the DiS sales force will be able to steal the Sky advertisers for personal gain... although I was always amazed at the American High School reunion one. Did those only show up on American IP addresses or something? Anyway, good luck obv.

Improving functionality? Ace.

Though I've heard rumours that BSkyB may be doing a joint venture with Sugardaddie.com...

Cancer does that to you

Poor SWells.

:)

It's really good to hear guys, keep up the great work, it's appreciated.

okay

in the past year i've found myself paying more attention to the 'community' anyway, instead of in-house reviews and stuff. it'll be interesting to see any tweaks and changes, and effects on reading habits.

good news

.

Flip

Seconded and a half. This seems to be a pervading trend on MySpace as well. Well annoying.

Lost An Eye

You've been talking about a new site design and Facebooky style interaction for a bit now - does this mean you aren't gonna fix the footer for IE7 users? It's really quite a mess down there.

Much as I was one of the 'compromised editorial' crowd I still hope nobody had to die cuz of the BSkyB retraction.

_

Hopefully you will relish the opportunities ahead

as you say...i look forward to any changes!

remove the swear filter...!

that's not very helpful is it? Hope Raz gets to keep his thrash Hits, apart from this site and more work on the drownloads then the rest can go as far as I care...

lol

Take that back!

No wait... you're quite right. Fortunately Bontcho hasn't actually played in over 12 months now.

why is everyone saying this is great:

do you want people to lose jobs and money? bastards, the lot of you.

not that at all

but I'd rather DiS/Quietus turned into a Pitchfork than a Popbitch. It's a useful site, I like the content, i read the reviews, I look at band profiles when I've not heard of something, I was very proud when someone asked to set up a profile for my band because they liked them! Lipster just makes me feel sad, it's really lowest common denominator heat/nme stuff that's already being done so there's no need to duplicate it for the sake of ad revenue...

If I see a facebook API

I will vomit into my shoes and wear them for a week.

I will take snapshots every six 6hrs and post them to my flickr account (www.flickr.com/photos/theavangelist) then the new lastFM API will let you hear the sound of my squelchy shoes as you look through the funky Flickr API for DiS, to see the sodden soles posted to the new community photo gallery.

Oh crap have I spoilt the predictable impending surprise?

I am all for mash up but whatever you boys do, make it good :-)

I'm guessing...

A big, fat, really shitty difference?

"community-focused site is forthcoming"

so, what, DiS is undergoing another redesign?

Lowest common denominator?

I really rather like The Lipster. Yes, it's entertainment-focused but it's well written and funny. Though I must admit I preferred it when Jude Rogers was editing it and it seemed to have more of a women's-magazine-but-good feel to it.

i used to work in an office with aidan moffat

his real time job is well depressing

Waaaaa!!! We love Mike!!

sob sob sob :-(

Adios dude.

x

And...

so it goes.

Sadface

:(

um

am i missing something here? like im all for sticking It to The Man, but mr diver et al are surely more important to the site than like, some little fucking advert.
this thread is exactly what i fucking hate about DiS. yeh everyone's been sacked but hey, at least its proper indie again.
gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhalexei

How

were we s'pose to know ppl would be sacked? Were all on the outside.

I don't think poeple know about Mike going.

I certainly didn't.

yeah i had no idea this meant any redundancies

i would happily have ads thrown at me left right and centre if the people that make this site what it is could continue doing what they do so well

I think:

"DiS will therefore return to being an independently-owned website."

Kind of set alarm bells ringing in terms of a reducton in financial resources, no?

Big shame if Mike's been given the push. This was one of the best music features i've read in a long while.

http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3224257

i thought they had several paid staff before the BSkyB thing

so no, it didn't occur to me

wait?

theres adverts on this site?
i must mentally not notice them, like i do on EVERY OTHER WEBSITE I LOOK AT!
stop it.

"Facebook style interaction"

would be the shittest, shittest thing that DIS could ever, ever do.

it's SYMBOLIC

it signifies THE END

As far as I know

rcrdlbl is run by the guys that started engadget and that sort of thing, I didn't know it had any ties to DiS. I seriously doubt it'd be affected by this, but then I amn't exactly on the inside track for any of this.

dis should always be about the reviews etc

the community aspect should feed off that, not visa versa
