Half-Year: Your Five Favourite ALBUMS of 2012 (so far!)
So we're half-way through the year (or at least we will be in a couple of weeks) and DiS is going to be doing our annual mid-year round-up. Before I pick DiS' Favourite Albums of the Year So Far, I'd like your input, as I always try to represent/aggregate a mixture of the staff and community opinions when doing any kind of listicle (and yeah, I love to hate lists too, but sadly they get loads and loads of traffic and fairweather readers really like them...and I know you all like making lists).
My Five...
Chromatics - Kill for Love
...a silky nightgown... becomes more of a masterpiece with every listen...
Shoulda given it 10/10: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16954/reviews/4144796
Blondes - Blondes
...sigh-fi, slow-wave, disso-dance, tranbian, trance-andental, throbtronica, shoeadelia, gaaasssp, bass-gaze, cat-gaze, lazer-haze...
10/10'd http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16739/reviews/4144395
Polica - Give You the Ghost
...alien RnB is a weak descriptor but it's darn close...
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16927/reviews/4144704
Blood Red Shoes - In Time To Voices
...brash and catchy and sure as hell not getting the reception it deserves...
School of Seven Bells - Ghostory
...three times as epic-epic-epic as the record M83 promised last year, and twice as nice...
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16748/reviews/4144516
Very almost in that top 5, and may be come year-end... Liars, Metric, FOE, Sigur Ros (really haven't made the time to listen to this properly), Bear in Heaven (belated review to run asafp), Twin Shadow (not out yet but I'm obsessed with it!), Sharon Van Etten, Eight And a Half, Julia Holter and probably a few others that aren't springing to mind...
If you're looking for inspiration/reminders: http://drownedinsound.com/lists/recommended-records
Gonna start a few sub-threads, so just stick to your album lists in here.

First Aid Kit - The Lions Roar
Chromatics
Chairlift
The Walkmen
Best Coast
Beach House
Oops. I didn't see the "five" favourites. Scratch the Best Coast then.
don't worry
it was more a suggestion so that people don't feel daunted about doing a small list if they see people doing ridiculous lists of 50... damn I forgot Chairlift...been such a great year so far!
too hard. there's been so many good records released this year in pretty much every strand of music I'm interested in.
maybe do 5 overall
and reply to your post with top 5s in different genres. rather than not doing it at all. 5 was just a guide.
Garbage - Not Your Kind of People
Orbital - Wonky
Metric - Synthetica
School of Seven Bells - Ghostory
Ladyhawke - Anxiety
Ultravox - Brilliant
The Hundred in the Hands - Red Night
FSOL - Environments 4
Air - Le Voyage Dans La Lune
Leftfield - Tourism (live album)
mind.in.a.box - Revelations
Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
The Big Pink - Future This
Tying Tiffany - Dark Days, White Nights
VCMG - Ssss
The Ting Tings - Sounds From Nowheresville
Apollo 440 - The Future's What It Used To Be
Errors - Have Some Faith in Magic
Lacuna Coil - Dark Adrenaline
Wow, Ultravox have released an album this year?
Gonna have to give that a listen.
It's Brilliant
:D
on tour again too
good to see that viola out
Wow, the Ting Tings released an album this year?
Thank god I never heard a note of it.
Snobbish attitude
They're not bad. Don't follow the herd.
One example from the new album, "Silence" (listen to this song from start to finish): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b2juF43AkQ
Do you like it?
To be honest
I really, really liked 'That's Not My Name' and still think it's a great single. But everything else they've done has left me cold or worse. This track comes under that category I'm afraid, just sounds like a crumby New Order pastiche to me. Sorry.
FSOL and Leftfield released stuff?
are you making this shit up? Damn I need to crack on then! Apollo 440- have they stopped making music designed for 90s adverts? If so, i'll give that a go too...
Tourism is a FANTASTIC live album.
It's up there with Underworld's "Everything Everything", Daft Punk's "Alive 2007" and Orbital's "Live at Glastonbury 1994-2004". All songs are slightly reworked.
FSOL released a new album from their "Environments" series. Expect gorgeous (and a bit dark) ambient music.
^ DEEP-BLUE YOU ARE NOW MY FAVOURITE DIS-ER
and like my other favourites, I'm still not sure if you're real.
Hmm, it's been a good year
Julia Holter - Ekstasis
Crocodiles - Endless Flowers
Beach House - Bloom
Islet - Illuminated People
Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action At A Distance
And the 5 best...
Garbage - Not Your Kind of People
Orbital - Wonky
Metric - Synthetica
School of Seven Bells - Ghostory
Errors - Have Some Faith in Magic
Only 4 so far...
1.Tindersticks (by a mile)
2.Lambchop
3.Actress
4.Blondes
Sure there is loads I haven't got into yet.
5. Orbital

Metric — Synthetica
Cloud Nothings — Attack on Memory
tindersticks should be top of every list!!

Shearwater
still haven't heard El-P or Killer Mike. So only four I REALLY like so far
Napalm Death - Utilitarian
Django Django - s/t
SID Chip Sounds - the music of the commodore 64

Need to give Liars more time. Torche was a disappointment.
Bass Clef - Reeling Skullways
Chromatics - Kill For Love
Catcall - The Warmest Place
Actress - R.I.P.
The Walkmen - Heaven
and Killer Mike - r.a.p. music
Top 5 you say?
I'm a whore for a pointless list. Well maybe:
1. Hot Chip
2. Orbital
3. FOTL
4. PiL
5. Death Grips
El-P still needs to grow on me, not as manic after the mentalness of Death Grips. Killer Mike good but inconsistent. The Chap's latest was very good but not quite their best. Holy Mountain could also replace Death Grips after a few more spins such is it's awesomeness.
Other notable nearlys:
Human don't be angry
Blondes (liked it a lot, didn't love it though)
Mark Lanegan Band (good but patchy)
Carter Tutti Void (only listened to it thrice but really liked it)
Field Music
RM Hubbert
Still need to buy Liars, The Men and Actress.
So far I'd give 2012 a 7.5 / 10
Also I suspect FOTL will sneak up to 2 soon
That Men album
is great - Strange not to see it mention above ...
Still need to listen properly to Liars and Actress too thoush
The more I hear Death Grips
the more it bores me. I don't think it's that exciting or new sounding.
Yeah I think I agree
Finding it hard to want to put it on now a few months down the line.
currently
Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me
Killer Mike - R.A.P Music
Liars - WIXIW
Future of the Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
Demdike Stare - Elemental
so much I haven't heard this year, Julia Holter, loads of droney shit, techno and other stuff I haven't bothered with
Props for having Billy Woods in there!
Still need to give the new Liars my full attention.
Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know
Errors - Have Some Faith In Magic
Hot Chip - In Our Heads
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Burial - Kindred EP (long enough to be an album isn't it?)
First five that spring to mind ...
Chromatics- Kill for Love
Death Grips- The Money Store
Sleigh Bells- Reign of Terror
Yppah- Eighty One
Japandroids- Celebration Rock
Symmetry and Cloud Nothings are good though, too. Based on last night's show, Purity Ring's album will be my runaway favourite of 2012.
Might just be me, but so far this year has been decent, not revelatory. Some v good stuff though..
Julia Holter
Lotus Plaza
Cloud Nothings
Death Grips
Loops of Your Heart
Tough one but...
Chairlift
M. Ward
Beach House
Usher
Lana Del Rey
No order (except for the top one)
Shackleton - Music for the Quiet Hour
First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Dustin Wong - Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads
Petar Dundov - Ideas from the Pond
Gang Colours - The Keychain Collection
Not listened to a lot, but:
Grimes - Visions (really surprised no-one else has said it yet)
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Orbital - Wonky
Internet Forever — s/t
>>>>>>>>
Anais Mitchell - Young Man in America

(somewhere very close is also Polica)
Sharon van Etten: Tramp

Sleigh Bells: Reign Of Terror
Chairlift: Something
Richard Hawley: Standing At The Sky's Edge
Good year so far:
Chromatics
First Aid Kit
Killer Mike
Decemberists' live album
The Imagined Village
Lurking just outside:
Mark Lanegan Band
Polica
Pleasant surprise of the year so far:
Beach Boys
Not entirely sure of the order,
The Walkmen - Heaven
Beach House - Bloom
Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
We Are Augustines, Lotus Plaza, The Shins - one or two others for the minor placings.
Earth – Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II
Claro Intelecto – Reform Club
Levon Vincent – Fabric 63

Recondite – On Acid
Also v. good: Lee Fields, Monolake, Keepers of the Light, Rinse Presents: Brackles, Voices From The Lake, Julia Holter, Perispirit, Vince Watson, Bryter Later, Blondes, R.A.P. Music
...
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Anais Mitchell - Young Man in America
You Slut! - Medium Bastard
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
El-P - Cancer for cure
I wanted to put Torche in there, but it just hasn't grabbed me yet.
Future of the Left, Baroness and Fang Island may be taking a few of those spots soon.
FAVES
1. Grimes – Visions: seems there is a minor backlash occurring because of her relentlessly wacky media persona, but it doesn’t affect the album which is really great.
2. Death Grips – The Money Store: so exciting, found ‘Guillotine’ unlistenable so I was put off them at first, but this clicked instantly. Could have been number one if they hadn’t cancelled their tour last minute. Is it too much to anticipate the second album they do this year could potentially be even better?
3. Dustin Wong - Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads: Haven’t seen much press for this. Instrumental album from the guitarist from Ponytail, relentlessly pleasant, puts me in a good mood.
4. Field Music – Plumb: 'how many more times, will you see the moon?'
5. Killer Mike – R.A.P Music/el-P – Cancer 4 Cure: I find it hard to separate these two albums in my mind, I envision them as a kind of ‘Speakerboxxx : The Love Below’ for this year. The relationship between Killer Mike and el-P is absolutely heart-warming.
Damien Jurado - Maraqopa
The Pre New - Music For People Who Hate Themselves (why no review DIS?)
The Chap - We Are Nobody
Gravenhurst - The Ghost In Daylight (no DIS review again, shocking etc)
Killing Joke - MMXII
PIL - This Is PIL
Swans - We Rose From Your Bed With The Sun In Our Head
I'm having 7.
Not sure TheChap was reviewed either
Sean maybe some good suggestions here for the Lost Albums feature?
We should start a thread.....
Thinking about it I'm not sure Swans got a review either? Shame really, I'm certain The Pre New, The Chap, Gravenhurst and of course Swans have plenty of interest here. Actually maybe not TPN but being ex Earl Brutus etc..?
I didn't think the Swans record was out yet?
Worth me getting it or starting somewhere safer?
Somewhere safer!
It may not be out, I ordered the vinyl a while back. Tell you what, I'll bring something along tomorrow for you.
That Damien Jurado record is superb
It can go on my list instead of Gang Colours, thanks for reminding me.
Brilliant (as usual) isn't it?
You're welcome.
I didn't know his back catalogue was as massive as it is recently
Where would be a good place to start?
Take a look at this:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4317783
I'd say go for 'Caught In The Trees' next then 'Ghost of David' or 'Rehearsals for Departure'.
I dunno
we probably didn't get sent copies, or maybe whoever was meant to do the review didn't submit their copy. It happens.
love for Gravenhurst
mine
1. Air: Le Voyage Dans La Lune
2. Ulrich Schnauss & Mark Peters: Underrated Silence
3. Bear in Heaven: I Love You, It's Cool
4. Sébastien Tellier: My God Is Blue
5. Tanlines: Mixed Emotions
5 is hard.
Beth Jeans Houghton - Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose of sure.
Beyond that, hmm - Belbury Poly, Tindersticks, Regina Spektor, Django Django possibly...
Copy-pasted list, it's just favourite things of this year.
Ukkonen - The Isolated Rhythms of... (Uncharted Audio)

:/ I need to get out more. Just slice off the top five of those
In no particular order...
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
The Men - Open Your Heart
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Chromatics - Kill For Love
The Walkmen - Heaven
Listened to new releases more than ever this year, enjoyed the vast majority, in particular: The Menzingers, SVE, First Aid Kit, Frankie Rose, Polica, Death Grips, The Cribs, El-P and Hot Chip.
Not listened to Liars enough yet but v. impressed so far. Most hit and miss album would have to be The Magnetic Fields.
Foe - Bad Dream Hotline
At the moment...
1. Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
2. Grimes - Visions
3. AU - Both Lights
4. Lower Dens - Nootropics
5. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
How the thread got this far without anyone mentioning the Perfume Genius record is beyond me.
I almost put it at number one
But for me, Tramp just pips it to the post.
Strange
I love your 2,3,4,5 choices, but can't get into Perfume Genius at all. Need to give him another try then. :)
Please do.
There are magical moments on that record, like 'All Waters', where no amount of hyperbole could find an adequate context for how special I think it is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlC_JQyOcS8
Nightlife by Phantogram is my favourite EP of the year by a mile
Also, I'm halfway through listening to Heartbreaking Bravery for the first time and thinking this could be up there...
Nightlife is superb indeed
But it was released last year.
Goddamn
Spotify has lied to me.
Perfume Genius is the best album of the year for me so far, too.
also lots of lists coming in over on our Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10150919152383145&id=19343183144
loosely ordered..
Cancer for Cure - El-P
Ekstasis - Julia Holter
s/t - Blondes
Sweet Light, Sweet Heart - Spiritualized
R.A.P. Music - Killer Mike
el-p and killer mike sorta being grouped
in which case
oro: opus primum - ufomammut
an absolute beast, looking forward to part two
1-Tindersticks
2-Jack White
3-Grimes
4-Andrew Bird
5-Chromatics
The first 3 probably will remain at the top 5 till the end of the year
slow year
Beach House - Bloom
Daughn Gibson - All Hell
Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
That Ty Segall/White Fence record
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
I did like that Cloud Nothings album for three listens or so, but i'm totally apathetic now ...
still need to hear: The Men, The Walkmen
In no order
Chromatics
Walkmen
Julia Holter
Grimes
Jack White
With Liars and Anais Mitchell just missing out
No really outstanding albums this year I don't think, although lots of decent interesting stuff.
I haven't been listening to new releases much this year but
John Talabot - Fin
Clams Casino - Instrumentals 2
Shackleton - Drawbar Organ EPs/Music for Quiet Hour

Liars - WIXIW
Put more thought into it then on facebook
1. Laurel Halo - Quarantine
2. Soap&Skin - Narrow

Though I'm still not happy with this list

uh maybe, like
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks

Beach House - Bloom
and the Xiu Xiu, Perfume Genius and Julia Holter records
favourite EPs are:
The Balloons - Georgette & Other Songs
Kwes - Meantime
Of Montreal!
totally forgot about that one - but it's one of those albums that's not instant gratification. Hard to get into to start with, can see me listening to this in a few years' time still though.
In no real order
Tindersticks - The Something Rain
Liars - WIXIW
Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light
Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Crown and Treaty

Lower Dens - Nootropics
The Walkmen - Heaven
Sharon Van Etten - Tramp

SEAN
sigh-fi is never gonna catch on. Stop it.
Especially as i have no idea what it means or how it could ever relate to blondes.
those descriptions for Blondes
actually make me want to hit sean
that's the point
also there's a feature in next month's Wired explaining what Sigh-Fi is.
It's not a thing
so that's a complete waste of time
I got paid tho. Not a complete waste of time.
I sigh-fi'd when I read that
Wait a minute...
I'm the only one here that like the new Garbage album?
No one mentions I Like Trains
this is an omission.
otherwise I'm loving the love for Orbital. Also The Men, Twilight Sad, Walkmen, etc too
1. Chromatics - Kill For Love
2. Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
3. John Talabot - Fin
4. Japandroids - Celebration Rock
5. Liars - WIXIW
^Maybe.
1. Killer Mike - R.A.P Music
2. El-P - Cancer 4 Cure
3. Schoolboy Q - Habits and Contradictions
4. Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
5. Death Grips - The Money Store
First two are miles ahead of the rest though. Been a slow year for me so far.
I usually catch up on everything around November time
I fill up the mp3 player just with records of that year and rattle through them.
Japandroids are winning for me at the moment, Torche's new one is a surprise also, loving it.
You better start early this year
.. loads of great stuff - by November your ears might explode!
-> Shackleton - Drawbar Organ EPs & (to a lesser extent) MftQH
not revolutionary (see comparisons to Muslimgauze) but it's such a perfect next step for him as an artist. I like it when people find their niche/aesthetic and then work on refining it. Every single beat seems perfectly placed and thought out and some of the transitions are mindblowing. The music on MftQH is arguably even better, but some of the vocals kind of irk me meaning I listen to it way less.
-> Actress - R.I.P.
I really couldn't get on with Splazsh for some reason, but I've fallen in love with this album. I don't know if it's just from the title/reading stuff about how he sees R.I.P. as a series of meditations on death and rebirth but the music does seem to manage to put that across without any lyrics which is impressive. Plus it's got some fucking bangers on it.
Those are the only two about which I have things to say but I've also really liked:
Grimes - Visions
Django Django - S/T
LHF - Keepers of the Light
Battles - Dross Glop
Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II
Mirrorring - Foreign Body
Motion Sickness of Time Travel - S/T
Mutilation Rites - Empyrean
Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras & The Congos
Single Mothers - Indian Pussy
and probably a bunch of others I've forgotten.
Forgot Bong - Mana Yood Sushai
i thought the ones i liked had got overlooked by everyone else, but no
I'm talking about
1. Anais Mitchell - Young Man in America
2. Damien Jurado - Maraqopa
3. Dustin Wong - Dreams Say, View, Create Shadow Leads
then other than that
4. The Men - Open Your Heart
5. Grimes - Visions
1. Elsiane - Mechanics of Emotion
and the usual suspects:
2. Beach House - Bloom
3. The Shins - Port of Morrow
4. Sigur Rós - Valtari
5. John Talabot - ƒin
heaven - the walkmen
Celebration rock - japandroids
Wixiw - liars
Bloom - beach house
Spooky action at a distance - lotus plaza
in no order
Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory
Liars -WIXIW
Santigold - Master Of My Make Believe
Actress - R.I.P

beach house
conduits
heartless bastards
i like trains
mark lanegan
orbital
porcelain raft
st etienne
the school

This year is so strong musically
that albums like Porcelain Raft and Trailer Trash Tracys will get overlooked.:(

That Porcelain Raft LP is excellent. I keep rediscovering it. Like a really nice Christmas present you forgot about.
In no particular order:
Hot Chip - In Our Heads
Future of the Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
Squarepusher - Ufabulum
Errors - Have Some Faith in Magic
Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light
Narrowly missing the pass:
Chromatics - Kill For Love

Shearwater at number one
Then these in no particular order:

Alt-J
NO ORDER
LONE _ GALAXY GARDEN
BVDUB _ SERENITY
MIRRORRING _ FOREIGN BODY
DEATH GRIPS _ THE MONEY STORE
SHARON VAN ETTEN _ TRAMP
(.... sorry for shouting but they are good)
In no order, and possibly not even my complete five (I'm indecisive as hedge, and have trouble distinuguishing between what was this year and 2011)
Beach House - 'Bloom'
Pinkunoizu - 'Free Time!'
Mirrorring - 'Foreign Body'
Grimes - 'Visions'
Struggling to think of a fifth -- I almost noted High Places' 'Original Colors' but that was 2011... I'm guessing 'R.I.P' by Actress'll make it on there once I've got that, from what I've heard.
Go on then...
1) Polica - Give You the Ghost
2) Jack White - Blunderbuss
3) Lana Del Rey - Born to Die
4) Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
5) First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Also expecting to have lots of love for the Alt-J album when I get it.
Not in order:
run,WALK!- Health
Blood Red Shoes- In Time To Voices
Pariso- Nothing Beyond Everything After
Pulled Apart By Horses- Tough Love
Future of the Left- The Plot Against Common Sense
I was unaware about three of these records
Shall rectify that!
I've been way out of touch this year but I'll go
Field Music - Plumb
as the stand out new album I've bought so far this year
In no particular order...
Tindersticks - The Something Rain
Richard Hawley - Standing At The Sky's Edge
Echo Lake - Wild Peace (only had it three days but blown away!)
The Walkmen - Heaven
Can't decide between Madames FOE and Del Rey for the final place. Catfight, anyone?!
Definitely FOE
C'mon!
Actress - 'R.I.P' and KTL - 'V' equal first, followed by
3) Dean Blunt - 'The Narcissist II' / Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland – ‘Black Is Beautiful’ / Hype Williams – ‘The Attitude Era’
4) Motion Sickness of Time Travel - 'Motion Sickness of Time Travel'
5) Inner Tube – ‘Inner Tube’
Also really like these:
- Julia Holter – ‘Ekstasis’
- Al Doum & The Fayrds – ‘Al Doum & The Fayrds'
- Chromatics – ‘Kill For Love’ / Symmetry – ‘Themes For An Imaginary Film’ / Drive OST
- Earth – ‘Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light’
- Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras & The Congos – ‘FRKWYS Vol. 9: Icon Give Thank'
Icon Give Thank is totally the best FRKWYS
Such glorious vibes.
Future Of The Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know
Errors - Have Some Faith In Magic
Guided By Voices - Let's Go Eat The Factory
Django Django - s/t
Probably those in no particular order. Should relisten to Cloud Nothings and see if it's better than Django or not. I forget.
for shizzle it izzle
Actress - R.I.P.
Way out front so far. Also up there: Death Grips, Grimes, Pallbearer, Japandroids, Hot Chip, Drudkh, KTL, Julia Holter, Killer Mike/El-P, Sun Araw/M. Geddes Gengras/The Congos, Beach House, Spiritualized, Liars, Ital.

or something like that...............see, too early for numbers. can't count to 5ive.
news just in
Motion Sickness of Time Travel is in my top 5 for certain now.
Twin Shadow - Confess, top 10.
Peaking Lights - Lucifer, top 10.
If I can justify putting Ash Pool's 2 track ep in my eoya list, then Cremation Is Irreversible
all subject to whtvrs.
The top four are all very close to being No 1
1) Sharon Van Etten, Tramp
2) Perfume Genius, Put Ur Back In 2 It
3) Advance Base, A Shut In's Prayer
4) Shearwater, Animal Joy
5) Cloud Nothings, Attack on Memory
Actually I think Animal Joy should be higher
A very close second.
THE MEN- open your heart
easily the greatest object of my affection this half-year.
Orbital
Japandroids
Shearwater
and The Walkmen also make the cut.
i feel like most of the 2012 records i've been waiting for haven't arrived yet.
A strong year so far, i reckon
1. The Walkmen - Heaven
2. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
3. Beach House - Bloom
4. Polica - Give You the Ghost
5= Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action At a Distance
5= Chromatics - Kill For Love
top 10 in no order, because i'm not sure which 5 i would lose.
a whisper in the noise - to forget (indie/post-rock/modern classical)
orcas - orcas (ambient/electronica)
polica - give you the ghost (electronica/indie pop)
trust - trst (electronica/synthpop)

power animal - exorcism (indie/experimental)
humans - traps (indie electronica)
olan mill - paths (ambient/modern classical)

Really glad you mentioned that Orcas album

I like DJ Rashad
.. need to listen to that one on the list at least.
I'm pretty blown away by it
Not had it that long, but heard a load fo the tracks on mixes etc. Its the best footwork album I've heard. I love the DJ Diamond album from last year and Traxman this year is solid as owt but man this is just something else. Teaser mix: http://soundcloud.com/djrashadteklife/rashad-spinn-we-trippy-mane
Oh shit
forgot about TEKLIFE
1. Japandroids - Celebration Rock
2. Death Grips - The Money Store
3. Hot Chip - In Our Heads
4. Chromatics - Kill for Love
also Maximo Park, The Cribs, Spiritualized, Cloud Nothings, Odd Future, Guided by Voices, John Talabot, Pulled Apart by Horses, Polica

Death Grips - The Money Store
Worm Ouroboros - Come The Thaw
Demdike Stare - Elemental
Mirroring - Foreign Body
Richard Knox & Frédéric D. Oberland - A Rustle of Stars
Actress - R.I.P
Marissa Nadler - The Sister
oh and
internet forever - s/t and wreck and reference - no youth
No Youth
is awesome. good shout on that.
i've fallen behind with the new tapes in the last couple of months but here goes
dick valentine “destroy the children”
no monster club “dublin”
django django “django django”
therapy? “a brief crack of light”
cloud nothings “attack on nothing”
the type of thing you know
Hey cowcow are you going to Django Django in Derry next week?
ha, this passed me by
so the answer is i might
I've only just found out one of them is actually from Derry.
Surprised all the Derry wans aren't shouting about it more.
big ^this for unsane roll on july 6th!!!!!
i thought about this on the walk to the bar and decided
Advance Base: A Shut-In's Prayer - Rhodes Organ For The Family Man. Owen Ashworth on the usual form i.e. about 40% better lyrically than everyone else on the planet.
Allo Darlin': Europe - my favourite band in the world. Absolutely nailing everything I really love about indie-pop, indie and pop.
Big Baby Gandhi: NO 1 2 LOOK UP 2 - better than Das Racist and all of those people innit.
Starving Weirdos: Land Lines - keep forgetting how good this is and then when people make threads like this consulting the notepad file I planned at the start of the year which essentially just consists of this and the Standard Fare record (which is also amazing). Ecstatic drones which sound like muslin.
Sun Araw, M Geddes Gengras, The Congos: Icon Give Thank - been saying this is my favourite record to impress people in clubs the past week or two. Apart from that nonsense it is really good, perfectly incorporating the The Congos vocal abilities into Cameron Stallone's psych-dub sound.
Also mad decent: the Butterz summer .zip, Standard Fare, Nite Jewel, Julia Holter, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Quakers etc etc etc
That Butterz zip is particularly brilliant
5+5
Beach House - Bloom
The Walkmen - Heaven
Lower Dens - Nootropics
Poliça - Give You the Ghost
Moonface (with Siinai) - Heartbreaking Bravery
+
John Talabot
First Aid Kit
Claro Intelecto
Trust
Fort Romeau
lots still to be heard, lots needing more listens
for now:
Zammuto - Zammuto
John Talabot - ƒin
Death Grips - The Money Store
Mirrorring - Foreign Body
Unsane - Wreck *high fives Pigfoot*
plus Dawn Richards' vibestastic Armor On EP
+1 Dawn Richard
Yep, little cracker, that.
This is difficult, been a lovely fucking year so far
1. Field Music - Plumb
Hits all the right spots for me, it's like a modern ELO record that isn't shit but more artful and off-kilter. It's only 35 minutes long but it feels like the perfect length and it plays like a proper album 'album' should. This was the album to sell me on the band.
2. EL-P - Cancer for Cure
I FEEL LIKE I'M DROWNINGGGGGG, HEEADDD DOWNNNNN, STAYYYYY DOWNNNNNNNNNNNN. Perfect modern hip-hop album, not a moment wasted on it.
3. Django Django - Django Django
Yeah, I'm still listening to it pretty regularly. Solid album full of great odd rock songs.
4. Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
Pretty much just because Hole in the Ocean Floor is possibly the most beautiful thing this handsome fellow has ever written.
5. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Aufheben
The best possible return to form for Newcombe, has a real Asian influence throughout and just full of brilliant, spaced out rocking moments.
Honourable mentions:
1. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
The duet tune with the lad from Beirut is bloody wonderful.
2. Sigur Ros - Valtari
Varúó is the best song Jonsi has written since the Takk days.
3. Human Don't Be Angry - Human Don't Be Angry
Anything Malcolm Middleton seems to record keeps me interested, beautiful, focused and mostly instrumental. Though the tracks in which his voice is in the foreground kill me as usual.
4. First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
They are really young these two sisters... well, they are about my age. Really strong album, soaring voices and mature, earnest lyrics. GOOD ALBUM
5. Jack White - Blunderbuss
It's just really good.
SO much I gotta catch up on
but as it stands
Field Music
Of Montreal
Death Grips
Extra Life
The Chap
with The Pre-New and El-P bubbling under, and KTL going to be listened the shit out of fairly soon (also from what I heard the Motion Sickness of Time Travel record was really fucking good and I hope I have the patience for a complete listen)
of course when Thumpermonkey release their album the game *will* change
In no particular order...
Tribes - Baby (yes, really)
Bruce Springsteen - Wreckin Ball
Jack White - Blunderbuss
Django Django - Django Django
Trailer Trash Tracys
ah sheit
Wrecking Ball is awesome
i listened to that ttt album on spotify a few times, really enjoyed it
bought the record and didn't even open it!
so now i am going to open it and listen to it and all that.
the men
ceremony
cloud nothings
lotus plaza
grimes
death grips
El-p
holy state
Brilliant year so far
1. Anais Mitchell
2. Sharon Van Etten
3. Foreign Fields
4. Boy Friend
5. Grimes
I don't have 5 worthy of making a top 5 but my favourites so far are:
Django Django
Porcelain Raft
Japandroids (probably, once I give it a few more listens)
Errors
Here We Go Magic
Portico Quartet
Hauschka
Have enjoyed those the most.
Also playing ; You Slut!, FOTL, Miaoux Miaoux, Pond, Japandroids, Holy Mountain - haven't lived with any of them for long enough yet to decide just yet decide
number one on my list still towers above anything else
1. Tindersicks - The Something Rain
2. Kwes - Meantime
3. Richard Hawley - Standing at the Sky's Edge
4. Gravenhurst - The Ghost in the Daylight
5. Porcelain Raft - Strange Weekend
Not sure of order but
The Walkmen
Beach House
Sharon Van Etten
Lower Dens
Django Django
Spiritualized - Sweet Heart, Sweet Light
Grimes - Visions
Actress - R.I.P
The Flaming Lips - The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends
Quakers - Quakers
I suspect Matthew Dears new album will find a place on here when it comes out too.
Tindersticks
Orbital
Killer Mike
Richard Hawley
Sigur Ros
K.
1. Liars - WIXIW
2. Errors - Have Some Faith in Magic
3. The Walkmen - Heaven
4. Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
5. Beach House - Bloom
Honourable Mentions:
- Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know
- Internet Forever - Internet Forever
- Django Django - Django Django
- Motion Sickness of Time Travel - Motion Sickness of Time Travel
- Shearwater - Animal Joy
Great Year so far but the old guard seem to be doing it for me
1. Dexys - One Day I'm Going to Soar. Mr Rowland returns to form in style. Self aware confessional lyrics, great melodies, a Romeo and Juliet album for 2012.
2. Orbital - Wonky. Far far better than I could ever have hoped for. Not a duff track on this album and the perfect friend for my daily commute up the M5.
3. Carter Tutti Void - Transverse. Throbbing Gristle let loose with modern technology. Abrasive, harsh, intense, awesome.
4. AU - Both Lights. Don't even know how to begin describing this which is probably the best praise you can give an artist. It is brilliant.
5. Actress - RIP. Really couldn't see what the fuss was about on first few listens but it has well and truly wormed its way into my head now. Dark but beautiful....reminds me of the Lucy album from last year in a lot of respects.
Honourable mentions -
Jon Talabot
Killing Joke
Killer Mike
Django Django
Simian Mobile Disco
5.
1. Cloud Nothings
2. Japandroids
3. Django Django
4. Jack White
5. Anais Mitchell
Forgot about Shearwater!
Sorry Anais
Lot of love for Orbital's most recent in here
Good work people of DiS
Errors
Grimes
Cloud Nothings
Squarepusher
Lone
Module - Imagineering
Mystical Sun - 26000
Orbital - Wonky
Stephen Hummel - Meld
Cymophane - Cymophane
*26000
There's one stand out for me so far...
Julia Holter - Ekstasis: Not sure whether I prefer this or tragedy, this is obviously a lot more accessible but it still keeps some of its charms back for repeat listens
And another four
Gonjasufi - Muzzle: I seem to be the only person who gives a damn about this album but whenever I listen to it I feel cool. Love the drums especially on
Liars - WIXIW: Only heard it a few times but really enjoying it so far
Chromatics - Kill For Love: Don't think I've actually listened to this all the way through in one go yet but it seems to be packed with tunes and has a great sound. Lady is an absolute tune
Barry Andrewsin Disko - Kuka Siella?: Fonal's latest release, kind of a mix between Paavoharju and early Animal Collective http://soundcloud.com/barry-andrewsin-disko/tracks
A bit surprised by all the love for Tramp
I like it on the whole but much prefer Epic. She's got a great voice and i think it gets lost at times with the fuller backing
I'm not surprised
I'd say it's me that gets lost in her voice....
Yeah, Epic is much better IMO
But you'd have to say Tramp is her breakthrough record, and lots of people (myself included) have fallen for her husky charms by that record first.
Great year so far
Au - Both Lights
Liars - WIXIW
Portico Quartet - Portico Quartet
Yellow Ostrich - Strange Land
Zammuto - Zammuto
Actually
Swap Yellow Ostrich for Grimes' 'Visions'.
Sharon Van Etten
Django Django
Poliça
Here We Go Magic
Zammuto
Beach House
Bear In Heaven
Ah, Zammuto love
good good, really want to listen to that album on a summers day but summer won't come!!
Maybe
Walkmen will be part of the list as I loved Lisbon to death but I didn't even start with Heaven yet.
In something resembling alphabetical order
Jack White - Blunderbuss
Pye Corner Audio - The Black Mill Tapes Volumes 1 & 2
Sigur Rós - Valtari
The Invisible - Rispah
Tindersticks - The Something Rain
Would be difficult to put those in order of favourites, Special mentions to the new Xiu Xiu and Zelienople records.
Tindersticks nothing else is close
except for:
Lambchop
Saint Etienne
Beach House
Field Music
Probably
1. Evan Caminiti - Night Dust
2. Zelienople - The World Is A House On Fire
3. Jon Porras - Black Mesa
4. Shackleton - The Drawbar Organ EPs
5. Ulaan Markhor - Ulaan Markhor
Great calls
I totally overlooked the Barn Owl stuff. Think they've reached a 'consistently awesome' stage and I take them for granted a bit now. The Portraits and Painted Caves stuff is great too.
Have you heard the Al Doum and the Faryds record? Think it actually came out in 2011 so probably doesn't fit in this list anyway, but I think you'd dig it (plus copies didn't make it over here till this year either, so I'm counting it). Really great private press middle eastern psych LP by a band from Milan. They also have a bandcamp where the album is 'pay what you like'
http://aldoum.bandcamp.com/
Ahh man, that Al Doum record is so good,
Thanks for reminding me!
That's ok!
Banged on about it about three times on these boards already so glad at least one other person has heard it!
the songs I heard from the Evan Caminiti record were really good. keep forgetting to get hold of it and I've think you've reminded me, cheers
reckon its...
Errors - Have Some Faith in Magic
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
Blood Red Shoes - In Time To Voices
I'm always late to the party but..
On reflection, I think I have enjoyed the following five more than others:
Cloud Nothings "Attack on Memory"
Chris Watson "El Tren Fantasma"
Islet "Illuminated People"
Kishi Bashi "151a"
The Wave Pictures "Long Black Cars"
Other honourable mentions: Team Me, 10-20, Sonnymoon, Portico Quartet, Of Montreal, Neal Morgan, Florian Lunaire.
Still sinking in but could be up there: Liars, Japandroids, alt-j, D'eon, Laurel Halo, Zammuto.
Here is my ongoing playlist of favourite albums:
http://open.spotify.com/user/digitaltenderness/playlist/57YgEyDl8tzmLeKKxColG7
Chromatics - Kill For Love
By some distance, then...
Orbital - Wonky
John Talabot - fin
Beach House - Bloom
Chairlift - Something
Liars - WIXIW
Grimes - Visions
Azusa Plane - Where The Sand Turns To Gold
Black Swan - Aeterna
Now, Now - Threads
Been trying to keep an up to date
Spotify playlist of stuff released in 2012. Just added loads of stuff people have recommended above, going to try and keep it updated through the rest of the year
http://open.spotify.com/user/sadballadman/playlist/1pOnBk400gCy1CcesUSoeZ
Chromatics' 'Kill for Love'
The Twilight Sad's 'No One Can Ever Know'
The Lost Rivers' 'Sin & Lostness'
Chairlift's 'Something'
The Jezabels' 'The Prisoner' (UK release this year)
That wasn't too difficult to pick either.
Possible albums which may well knock one of those off could be 'Confess' by Twin Shadow, 'XII' by Parallels, (or Tesla Boy's and Cosmetics' albums which don't have release dates yet).
In some sort of order
1) Alt-J - An awesome Wave (Definitely number 1 - listened to this loads more than anything else for a long time - No DiS review yet)
2) Polica - Give You The Ghost
3) Chairlift - Something
4) FOE - Bad Dream Hotline
5) Lilacs & Champagne - S/T
Mentions: Yppah, Sharon Van Etten, Tennis, Richard Hawley
Chromatics- Kill for Love

hmmmmm
Haino/O'Rourke/Ambarchi - Imikuzushi
Ty Segall/White Fence - Hair
VA - Personal Space - Electronic Soul comp
Patrice & Friends - Champagne Saunas
Tonstartssbandht - Hymn/Sinkhole/Storm & Sandwich (the second side is the meeting point between Creedence & Les Rallizes Denudes!!!111
Probably forgotten something obvious. Henny Moan - The Coming Thaw is good too.
looking forward to Thee Oh Sees again, Factory Floor, Crystal Ark ablums.
hey tonstartsbandht sound pretty swell
they are
first they were sort of Panda Bear like but now that has taken a bit of a back seat to the psychedelic rock. Idk why I put Les Rallizes Denudes though they aren't quite that loud. It's more like Creedence + Parson Sound. Does that cool thing where your brain knows it's just the same riff but it starts to sound all warped and almost sounds like the whole thing has started going backwards
The second side of the album is on spodify too if other people would like to listen
cccoooollll
i will listen to that. my spotify queued list is 7 hours long now! good morning for new music for me.
I am going to buy Imikuzushi
yes I am. New Fushitsusha record apparently out now as well.
Imikuzushi is mind blowingly brilliant
I checked this out after you posted about it in the 'difficult albums' thread. So glad I investigated in this, many thanks!!!

Laurel Halo- 'Quarantine'
Prinzhorn Dance School- 'Clay Class'
I wish I could put Keaton Henson up there; listened to 'Dear' more than anything else this year, but there's a couple of songs I'm not sold on yet. He will make a genuinely great record one day.
Varjen - Hardland EP
really love this haunting singer-songwriter from Sweden! 'Shoreline Weeks' is bittersweet and incredible.. surprised DIS did not find this song.

Loving Harmonicraft so much
1. Torche - Harmonicraft
2. Pulled Apart By Horses - Tough Love
3. Hawk Eyes - Ideas
4. The Menzingers - On The Impossible Past
5. Death Grips - The Money Store
Also the new Hot Water Music album is dead good and I've only heard some of the new Turbonegro and it's top stuff.

Such a fucking great album, completely answered all my concerns about them on the debut.
what are The Menzingers like?
badly worded :-/

Morose sounding, gravelly punk rock.

This new Echo Lake album that i'm listening to now.
Good year.
in no un-certain terms, I think there're only two records which have bowled me over this year.
Icon Give Thank by Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras and The Congos
and
Spooky Action At A Distance by Lotus Plaza
Icon... in particular may well be my favourite record of the past few years...
is anyone here 'winning'?
i can't count
Been meaning
to do this for a while, but not a lot of amazing around this year so far for me
School Of Seven Bells
The Invisible
Japandroids
Liars
Exitmusic
Minimal love for Dexys?
Gah. Definitely in my Top 5, accompanied by:
Richard Hawley
Maccabees
Jack White
Blood Red Shoes
I'm away from home at the moment but have the Hot Chip, Sigur Ros and Liars albums waiting on my kitchen table waiting for my listening pleasure - would like to think at least one of them would squeak into the Top 5.
so so late to this
Very rough, but top 10 I think is something like this
The Men - Open Your Heart
Moonface - Heartbreaking Bravery
Guided By Voices - Let's Go Eat The Factory
Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
Guided By Voices - Class Clown Spots A UFO
Future Of The Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
Echo Lake - Wild Peace
Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory
School Of Seven Bells - Ghostory
Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
paring it down to 5, no order ...
The Men - Open Your Heart
Moonface - Heartbreaking Bravery
Guided By Voices - Let's Go Eat The Factory
Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory
