Make no mistake, The Lodger's Ben Siddall is well on the way to becoming his generation's answer to David Gedge. 'Watching' is a skewered hate/love song of self-paranoia and mistrust that recalls The Wedding Present at their most unapologetically direct, whilst matching fellow Yorkshire dwellers The Research in making a tale of such misery and despair sound so excitably happy.
Flip over to the b-side and 'Not So Fast' slows the tempo down a little bit, as its title might suggest, to a fine-tuned torch song waltz that's befitting of Antony or any of the Johnsons for that matter.
If "My Vitriol" lived up to their name, this is what they would sound like.
