dido must be gutted
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
snow patrol will win.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
And Cullum and Melua. I mean bloody Joss Stone is there, they might as well have put them in too.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Nice to se the Ty album in there. Very keen on that.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Ty? "Upwards"? Bloody Hell! I think that should win just for getting a nomination!
No, seriously - whilst I can't believe these people were even aware of Ty's existence, I've heard several of these the whole way through, and whilst I hate to judge the others solely on singles / downloads / opinions / reviews, I think The Streets should win.
But it won't, because we've had two token "urban" awards in a row now.
And it won't be FF or Keane because that's too obvious.
You know, I think this just might be Belle and Sebastian's year :)

Why isn't there awards for music that hasn't had thousands spent on marketing it?
Just a thought.
Just a thought.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
What, like the Diesel U Music awards for unsigned bands?
Problem is, they give awards to shite like the Infadels.

dont get my hopes up - that would be great for them at last

What's the inclusion criteria again - how many copies Tesco have sold?
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Where's the token Asian act?!
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Hope Of The States would have been nice... but at the end of the day you can't take this award seriously.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
what happened to the obligatory random folkster that noones heard of?
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I like the fact Steve Lamacq said that thisGIRL should be up for it on Radio1 lastnight.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Even Muse are too loud for them though, apparently
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
what? Like, say, Robert Wyatt?
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
When Amy Winehouse talks she sounds like Chandler's ex girlfriend in Friends... the one that goes "OH. MY. GOD!" in a really high pitched voice. Just me then? Fair enough...
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
IF Chandler's ex was a chav from the Estuary, then yeah, she does!
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
didnt see that, but geberally its someone whose name ive literally never heard before.

wasn't the muse album nominated last year? its been out a while...

I'm glad to see Belle & Sebastian in there. Not enough people own that album. Anyone else dislike the Zutons? It doesn't do anything for me.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
The token folk act should've been John Spiers & Jon Boden with their 2nd album.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
where the heck are lostprophets?thats easy my album of the year by far!
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I never really liked them, thought they were alright at Glasto though
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Not a big fan of The Zutons from what i've heard. Dear Catasrophe Waitress has been out for almost a year i'm sure, brilliant album however. I should imagine Keane, Franz Ferdinand or Joss Stone will win. Where the bloody hell is PJ Harvey as well? Ok Uh Huh Her isn't a masterpiece but cut the lady some slack for being a cool-ass-motherfucker. It's only been out for a month or so I guess.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Here is my measured opinion:
Basement Jaxx Kish Kash (XL Recording)-good
Belle & Sebastian Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Rough Trade)-v.good
Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand (Domino)-brilliant
Jamelia Thank You (Parlophone)-crap pikey r &b
Keane Hopes and Fears (Island Records)-sleep inducing
Snow Patrol Final Straw (Fiction)-ditto
Joss Stone The Soul Sessions (Relentless)-she doesnt write any songs but good voice
The Streets A Grand Don't Come for Free (679 Recordings)-overrated
Ty Upwards (Big Dada Recordings)-dunno
Amy Winehouse Frank (Island Records)-overrated,shit
Robert Wyatt Cuckooland (Hannibal / Rykodisc)-who?
The Zutons Who Killed The Zutons (Deltasonic)-okayish
I wanna see FF win or B & S. If Keane won I'd cry.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
You "dunno" and "who?"'d arguably the two best musicians on that list :D
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
before writing 'who?' in such a dismissive manner, perhaps you could make an effort to find out who he is?
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I've I was pushed I'd say it's between Snow Patrol and The Streets for me.
I've been listening to a lot of HOTS and yourcodenameis:milo. The Lost Riots is lovely. I don't know how the nominees are decided but I would rather see HOTS before Jamelia, for example.
The 'haven't bought the cd but I'm sure a lot of other people did' act that gets my vote would be Robert Wyatt.
And the Zutons are fucking...average.

Not the best basement jaxx album but it's probably the best on the list.
Then The Streets.
Jamelia and Ty are the only two artists i'd like to see win.

Dull list, yeh. UK music is in a bad way though. Hoorah for the Robert Wyatt. Seriously good. But what else are you suggesting? The Cribs?
My vote is Cabin Fever by the Scaramanga Six.

Belle And Sebastian to win it!
Their best ever album, beautiful pop songs that make Keane seem like uncatchy bastards.

haven't heard Ty, but surely the lost riots should be there of anything in this world wasn't twisted?
but then...you remember it's mercury, and you stop caring and go take a shit.

And here we go.
People who are bitching about 'only marketed records' are fucking eejits.
If Mercury nominated a load of obscure albums, no-one except us uber-pretentious indie farts (a very small number) would give more than two flying fucks, and 80% of us would still moan about it. Therefore, these awards would become pointless.
As it is, they're the best way for people on the verges of good music to start to discover it. Now they have gone quite commercial again this year...but that's that. I don't agree with Snow Patrol - the album's no better or worse than their two previous efforts. Even though it's not brilliant, no-one sounds like the Zutons, so that's a great choice.
But where are Elbow?
btw Keane are not consistent or talented enough to be on this list.

i take it this post ^ is a pisstake
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Well I was particularly happy with their Glasto set as two of my favourite ever bands are B&S and The Zombies...and they played a Zombies cover! I was in heaven.
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Razorlight?
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
shoulda been King Creosote.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Sorry i meant The Zutons! I like Belle and Sebastian, missed them at glasto though
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Not the most inspiring list, it has to be said, even by the Mercury's standards. 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress' is the best of the ones I've heard, followed by the surprisingly consistent Jamelia album.
No idea why the palpably disappointing 'Kish Kash' is in there (I'd like to see it as a belated admission that 'Remedy' should've won it in 1999, but I expect they just wanted something dancey and couldn't think of anything better). And as for that bloody Joss Stone album...

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Was about to say that. It's not his best work by any stretch of the imagination, but it is still very good and much better than anything in that gash list.
The Streets should win, just for not doing another album of geezer-anthems.

*yawns*
i know i'm getting old now... the only record i'd like to see win is Cuckooland by Robert Wyatt. which is well worth getting bytheby, not really folk, sunny, very unique.
with the possible exception of The Zutons, i just don't see how winning would make a difference to the lives of anyone else. so much for championing the underground... very very mainstream, very very indie *spits* very very disappointing.

Any idea what the eligable release dates for the albums included were? Some recent ones might technically be in next years list.
HOTS? Don't make me laugh. Buy the original versions of the tracks on Constelation records, they are much better...
Snow Patrol's album is great, unfortunately I bought it last year when it actually came out the first time so it seems less important now. I'd probably still give them the award though, maybe B&S after that.

i know its not a very fashionable thing to say, but i think Jamelia stands a really good chance of winning this as there's a bit more going on in there stuff than 'crap pikey r&b'
i'm not particularly a fan, but its the best record on that shitty list.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I love the Snow Patrol backlash - it's nice being safe in the knowledge that people who know Run can happily walk away without ever hearing tracks like Velocity Girl, Black and Blue, Wow etc. convinced that they know exactly what they are talking about.
Still probably the best album I've heard on the list. Franz Ferdinand is too samey, Joss Stone is mostly covers, Keane's is nice but not exactly ground breaking, The Streets is better than the last one but I'm still not convinced, B&S is nice but it's not all that different from their previous albums, Jaxx have good tunes but they still sound better as individual tracks. Zutons were good at G but I haven't heard the album. The rest I don't know.
I forgot to mention in my other post, Carina Round's 'Disconnection' was probably the best album released this year.

Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, and later DDIHC have single handedly managed to put Scotland on the map. Indeed with some fantastic music. If Snow Patrol are in it I reckon they should win.
Final Straw is **FAR** superior to the previous albums.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
actually i'll say a bit more cos that might not have been very clear. they should be up for having the best album i've heard this year in 'modern apprentice'. ok it may well be dismissed as art/indie drivvle but it's top class it really is
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
but not quite as good as their debut 'chat and business'

i've just realised that should've been a reply. damn
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Yes, Ikara Colt's album should have been in the top 12.
I likes it a lot.
I would also argue the case for The Earlies, although their album has only come out this week. Maybe next year? It's a grower, for sure.

i really don't care this year at all...Ty should win, he's fucking class, but he's got a snowball's chance in hell.
something about Franz Ferdinand pisses me off, the guitars are too twangy (?)

Yeah, I re-read the message and realised. Doh!

have you heard the Zombies' new single? I heard it on Radio 2 the other night. Fucking dire!!
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I'd like Belle and Sebastian to win, but I guess The Streets is the obvious choice after all the bumming he's been getting. Even though he's shit.
The rest of them are just a bit BLANd really.
With a capital B-L-A and N.

the mercury hasn't had a worthy winner since roni size in '97... possibly
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Hmmm I've seen in a shop...I don't pay attention much these days. I mean, how can they ever live up to their 60's career? Without Chris White as well. It just doesn't work. Take note Arthur Lee - old rokcers should not make new records!
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Wasn't the point of the awards once upon a time that new, different-to-the-mainstream originality? In which case, Franz Ferdinand, Ty (from what I've heard, which isn't a lot I'll admit) and even Joss Stone (for reinterpreting tunes, albeit not to my tastes) seem to deserve to be there for that reason, just like I think Gomez did in '98. They did something no one else did, or at least not at the time.
All of which points to The Lost Riots, whether it's your thing or not (and it's most definitely mine), it's a different take on music that we've heard before, at least as far as I'm aware. Political without being overly preachy, orchestral without being overblown, and with really great songs to boot.
Re: not taking the award seriously, surely if bands were nominated and won for the right reasons - promoting originality etc - rather than chasing the public/NME's whim, then it would be taken seriously? I think this year's list is a step the right way personally, but there's still a long way to go before the Mercury's serve their purpose, or indeed any purpose at all.

Jamelia.. consistent perhaps. Consistently bland. I like a good pop act me, but this? This is no inspirational piece of art, it's tepid, watered-down, rhythmically dull and pretty much no blues. Blech.
Basement Jaxx, Belle and Sebastian or Robert Wyatt would be the ones who would please me most if they were to win. Still a crap list really!

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I agree with you about Snow Patrol. People don't like then because of Run, or rather, not because of the song, but because of the success, they've decided, and they're not going to change their mind. The elistist snobbish end of pop music is very bitter towards success, so much that previously small bands who make it big are suddenly cast aside (some people I knew who actually liked Final Straw said they never had as soon as Run got a lot of airplay - fucking pathetic anti-music arguments). I'd say it'd be sad because people on this website are generally open-minded enough to deserve to appreciate good music rather than your average radio 1 listener, but i'd rather just say "fuck you" if they're going to be so set in their own smug opinions and self-assured whinging they can't be arsed to think of their own opinions. Feckin' eejits.
Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Its got nothing to do with the sucess they've had. Sure I don't think they deserve the sucess they've had but I've listened to their albums, its alright, I sorta like Run even though it utterly rips off coldplay. Maybe thats why its goodish? I like coldplay but one band like that is enough.
The fact snow patrol pale into insignifcance compared to Hope of the States and previous winners like Gomez and Primal Scream.
remember this is just my opinon. Sugesting im narrow minded just because i dont like snow patrol is the most utterly retarded thing to ever come out of someones mouth for a long while.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
Nah, it was released after the ceremony last year just about I think, and anyway the nomination period runs July-July; it was out in September so it would have been this year. Coldplay's album had been out longer than that when it got nominated for last year's too
The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
The Robert Wyatt album is stunning. A gorgeous album that covers just about every human emotion. He's an extremely intelligent man too, one of the most literate musicians in the country at the moment.
Never thought much of Soft Machine, mind!

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
And what is your opinion on who the award should go to? You never did say... :p
I'm not a Coldplay fan personally - Shiver & Yellow yes, rest of them not really. Maybe we should start a Coldplay Vs Snow patrol rivalry like the old Blur Vs Oasis one (Blur all the way baby!) and have both bands at No's 1 & 2 in the chart. That'd be good.
I'd probably like HOTS if the singer (Sam) was more my cup of tea (don't like his voice or his attitude), at least they are a bit inovative and making GS!YBE poppy short and accessible to the masses - saw Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies yesterday at Truck and it was like watching a Mogwai tribute band.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I would say hots should win but since they arent nominated. Its a hard choice, I like FF but not them, same with the zutons. Belle and sebastian maybe? though i've not heard their album. The Streets, but hes already won it. Basement Jax Im not too sure about. Keane could just go throw themselves off a bridge. Snow Patrol just irk me somewhat.
Sams voice is a matter of opinon I think it fits the music perfectly. I think the GS!YBE comparison is unfair. I think godspeed are better, Hots do take a lot of inspiration from them and are fairly light fingered with regards to them but the mood is completly different. Godspeed are the only band I know that can genuinly scare people, and hots is uplifting. Incredable live, I put em on par with a silver mount zion live(though on album not as good really) I also see your point about his attitude but from all accounts(including mine) hes a really nice person.
I haven't seen YMSS I got to listen to the wonderous delights of the others, and by wonderous delights I mean horrible crappyness.
I don't like coldplay much either, some nice stuff. A rivalry sounds like fun. Blur all the way for me to! I do love oasis second album though, but...thats it.

Re: The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
I surprised myself by agreeing to watch Oasis at Glasto (drunk?) and not hating them (must have been drunk).
Maybe Sam just doesn't like me & my friends... :D
I'd rather have Frankie Sparo's smooth voiced dissonance over my space rock anyday. I know what you mean about the uplifting nes, which is more SMZ I suppose. I like them live but wish I was watching Canadians instead. Plus they never start on time so they always get turned off by the sound guys at festivals.
looks like B&S are the consistant runner up choice and that seems to be what wins most years.
Would Coldplay Vs SP revolve around who could write the quietest song do you think?
Speaking of SP, what did you think of Gary's quieter side project - Reindeer Section?

They sounded like they'd got a time machine - gone back to 1998 and raided the Math Rock section of my local record shop from that era (plastic factory, Birmingham - maysherestinpeace) and stapled them together. Then they seemed to not notice the crowd due to focusing on putting all the notes in the right places.
The acapella section almost saved them, the freeform sax bit made me cringe more than anything this weekend (and I watched Misty's Big Adventure) and I left to watch Damian Dempsey.
I'll give them another shot, no doubt via a legal download at some point but as for truck 2004 they just didn't excite me.

The Mercury? Predictable? Surely not...
i think the hots was realeased too late? even though they decide the nominations now like someone else said the deadline is earlier. or maybe im wrong and they just missed it off..
i would expect a grand dont come for free to win, as that is the most innovative (i think) record on that list. but its a tough one to call.
