What do you get when you cross an ex-Libertines star, Selfish Cunt, Buckingham Palace, and some horseshit? Why, a news story of course! DiS was there to witness the mess...
During a photoshoot for the NME yesterday outside the Palace, a horse saw a prime moment to take a dump. The resulting poo was then kicked around by Attention-Seeking Bloke from disco punks Selfish Cunt, before he picked it up with his bare hands and started hurling the poo at Babyshambles' Pete Doherty and photographer Andrew Kendall. The Others' singer Dominic Masters then tipped a pint of beer over Selfish thingy's head. As Doherty, looking pale but rather dapper in a black suit, wrestled Selfish wotsit to the ground and shocked tourists watched, several policemen ran in to break them up.
Also involved in the shoot were some of London's finest new bands - Neils Children, The Rakes, Dogs, Thee Unstrung, The Paddingtons, Wolfman and Art Brut (including their new stand-in guitarist, DiS' own 15-yr-old Alex Wisgard).
Jolly good fun it was too.

Err, aren't all these publicity stunts getting a little boring? Just a thought, I mean I know London/ NME has its own little pet scene to protect, but... dare I say it... what about the music! I doubt many people really care for these publicity stunts- it's hardly shocking.

Interesting that when this band The Others "decide" they're just going to turn up and play on the back of a bus, every journalist and photographer is there to cover it. You didn't catch Supertramp doing that sort of thing I can tell yer.

Speaking as someone who supposedly do 'Griller' gigs, I find the whole concept a bit peculiar to, the fact that everyone talks about them does kind of negate the point and concept, but I don't think you can blame a band for getting photographers etc... along, they are very good publicity stunts as well as being quite exciting and enjoyable (No promoters / agents to please!).
And as far as the London 'scene' goes, I fight that quite amusing to, I must be one of the 10% involved that actually comes from London and I'm sure there's always been a scene in London...

seriously though, the problem with this new London scene is that its only ever going to be a 'London' scene.
never mind the old worry of breaking America, these bands are going to have an impossible time breaking Norwich or Dundee.

I heard it whilst watching the Smoking Room on BBC3,
it is a euphemism for homosexual, yes. But it's also a pretty cool insult, in the playground sense of terms like 'poof', 'fag' etc.
Either way Selfish Cunt were wankers, their lyrics were awful and deliberately provocative, slaggin' off black people and the working classes. Fuckin' posh bastards...

Selfish Cnut are one of the worst bands ever. Regardless of any controversy of their name, lyrics, or antagonistic nature, they're just shit.

To be fair, I think all the 'fuck the poor' type stuff is more a dig at Blair et al, than just an attempt to be complete tossers. Martin is a chap who does go out of his way to shock and offend, though...but, we share a rehearsal studio with Selfish Cunt and, whaddayaknow, he's actually a perfect gent, I 'spose you can't be a selfish cunt 24/7.

I wasn't on about the fuck the poor song, it was the anti-semetic football watching one and the one where he uses the N word ( in the context of saying black people should be killed).
And anyway, whilst I intensely dislike the arrogant megolomaniac, Blair did once do something for the poor you know, it was called the minimum wage. Although he hasn't done much more for them since.
We're in such an awful time right now politically speaking, Blair just isn't good enough and the alternatives (Gordon Brown, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy) wouldn't be any better. I only wish that when Blair goes Peter Hain gets picked to succeed him (the only Labour politician I'm aware of that could potentially be a truly great world leader), but I think that's something of a Utopia...
