This weekend's Unite Against Fascism/Love Music Hate Racism festival in London's Finsbury Park has been cancelled.

The event has had its plug pulled following headliners The Libertines' announcement that they would not be appearing due to Pete Doherty's ill health/general bonkers behaviour.

Doherty is currently, allegedly, in France, battling his addiction to drugs.

The organisers released the following statement:
"We would like to thank averyone who has worked so hard to try and stage a major musical protest against racism and fascism ahead of June 10. That work will not be in vain. Hundreds of artists big and small across the UK have now publicly stated their determination to stop the fascists, and many have pledged to play at future gigs."

Mick Jones, once of The Clash, has been telling anyone with ears that the new Libertines album is the shit. DiS isn't holding its breath, but wishes Pete all the best in his efforts to get healthier.

I quite liked Up The Bracket, but the fact is that whatever you think of the band, what's really needed is for Pete to go away and sort himself out in private. That means no full-page updates in the NME every week.

How the fudge can one band cancelling (all be it a headline band) lead to an entire festival being cancelled?

Where they just stretching the definition of Festival really to include 'One big band and David Gray and some other shite'...?

No chance of NME leaving him alone quite yet - they had an entire artical devoted to the monastry in Thailand where someone offered to send him to detox. Talk about scrapeing the bottom of the barrel. Mind you, the next artical was three pages of asking the kid out of Harry Potter about his favourite bands...

I have no idea how just because of Pete's madness/depression/press attention can cause the whole thing could be canceled. Sounds like 'Unite Against Fascism' is more about the Libertines than a real cause?

That actually quite annoyed me; it was one of the most substanceless interviews I've ever read. Firstly, Harry Potter isn't exactly the standard indie-rock fan's movie of choice, so why should we care about the 14 year old kid in it. No disrespect to him, he's done well for himself, but I don't really want to read about any actor in the New MUSICAL Express. If I want that I'll buy Empire. Secondly, the "interview" consisted of little more than him listing his favourite bands and name checking who he met in the Radio 1 lobby. I wouldn't even want to read a self-serving, self-congratulatory article like that about Paul McCartney or David Bowie, let alone the Harry Potter kid.

But yeh, it's weird the whole "festival" being cancelled just 'cos of The Libs. I understand completely that playing a gig is probably the last thing on their minds with their friend being so ill, but the rest of the lineup looked pretty alrite, especially for a free charity event, so couldn't they just get someone else in to headline at the last minute?

we can conclude from this sorry episode that whoever deals doherty his drugs hates music and loves racism. we should find this guy, put his head on a spike and parade it around london..

Just got word of this from the Art Brut mailing list: As a replacement for the cancelled event, there's a LMHR "roadshow" on Sunday, featuring Art Brut, The Fades and various others.

Lets hope the mainstream press get bored of the libertines when they realise this fucking bollox has gone on way too long.
Then we can get back to hearing about the white stripes and other assorted boring acts 24-7.
