Video Thrills the Radio Stars: Music DVD Sales Double

High-profile DVD video releases from the likes of Coldplay, Robbie Williams and U2 have pushed sales of the format up by 95% over the last year.

Of the 6.4 million music DVDs sold, 60% have been live performance releases. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry commented: "The music industry has both fuelled and responded to consumer demand for DVD music video by providing both quality and quantity. Strong growth is expected again in 2004 as consumers extend DVD buying beyond just their favourite artists and choice is widened."

The DVD boom is a ray of sunshine on an industry sweating over the impact of illegal music downloads. CD sales may have dropped worldwide, but one thing seems certain: we just can't get enough of seeing Chris Martin wave his head about like he's a sandwich, a Thermos and a blanket short of a picnic. Here's to the live DVD of Britney's current tour. Cheers!

I really enjoyed the Doves DVD - which had a live performance on from the Eden Project. The thing is, that music DVDs can offer so much more than, say, a film DVD can. They can offer not just the live performances and interviews, but also promo videos for songs, demo sections, mini-documentaries. There's more scope for a more varied DVD. Which is also why music DVDs sell well. Possibly.

i think it's partly that reason brusma and partly the whole 'new technology? It must be better!" mentality. Perhaps the DVD sales will stop whiny record companies from farting on about downloading for a while.

Re: Video Thrills the Radio Stars: Music DVD Sales Double

Or maybe the music industry should learn how to fart downloads, it's be an interesting new format...

There are good and bad ones. I'd recommend the Weezer DVD and both Super Furries DVDs as examples of how to do it properly. Plus as Mr Brusma says, the Doves DVD is top. Examples of how not to do it - Blink 182, Massive Attack (especially) and a host of others.

Apparently the Foo's DVD isn't that good either.

Re: Video Thrills the Radio Stars: Music DVD Sales

yeah that massive attack one is lame....
also the videos by michael gondry, spike jonze etc are cool. i bought the r.e.m. greatest hits one- nice videos , good extras.

Re: Video Thrills the Radio Stars: Music DVD Sales Double

Four live versions of 'Everlong' were a little surplus to requirements, even if it's one of my favourite records ever. There should have been one gig, all the videos and some other stuff...

there's a pixies one out soon that looks good, all their vids, a documentary, and one of their early uk gigs. a bargain at £10 online. not bad for a non-band endorsed dvd.
