Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

Coldplay have scooped the "record of the year" award at the US Grammy Awards for their song 'Clocks', while OutKast picked up "album of the year" for 'Speakerboxxx/The Love Below'.

Other winners in numerous categories too tedious to list include Evanesence (!), Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Kylie, Pink, Dave Matthews, Metallica, White Stripes/Jack White, Foo Fighters, Beyoncé and Eminem.

The Neptunes won "producer of the year," as you'd expect, really.

People can say what they like about Coldplay's activities and statements at award ceremonies (they were being likened to whinging students by a radio presenter this morning)... but the fact is that they had another pop at George W Bush and given that America currently goes into national uproar over the display of a body part that HALF THE BLOODY POPULATION HAS, that takes guts.

Re: Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

Good on him. I bet Bush is shitting himself. Not.

Re: Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

Strangely enough, rather than make a pop at Bush (very obvious, though laudable), it would have been dead cool if they'd have done a big 'Make Trade Fair' thing... good for that message to get to the US TV audience.

Re: Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

He won't be at all bothered... my point was more about how brave you have to be to make comments like that in the USA right now.

The uproar over Janet Jackson's exposure comes from the same conservative gang that will vote Republican this year in order to ensure that these nasty gay people don't get married and that America is safe from 'those damn Arabs' (or whatever Rush Limbaugh likes to call them). Well over half the population didn't give a fuck about the exposed breast and, as we remember from the last election, most of the population didn't vote the Texan twat in anyhow... personally I applaud Chris Martin for saying what he did, he certainly came over a lot better than Quentin 'Smarmy Fuck' Tarantino did.

The whole evening was very dull though. A wonderful celebration of mainstream music. Yawn.

I wonder what would have happened had Chris et al got thier right nipple out as well...

Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

I remember when i saw Coldplay support Muse a few years back (juts after shiver had been released), i thought what a proper dull band, nice but ultimately rubbish.

having listened to their albums a few more times since then i can say that yes - they are an okay band, but i do have to ask the question:

Why or how have they managed to become so god damn popular?
they might have good lyrics but at the end of the day that doesnt compensate for them beign dull, or does it?

they play 'safe' middle of the road music that bores the hell out of me after the first few listens. and as for Chis Martin, does he think he's the new Bono? everytime i see or read about him and his hidden messages i just have to laugh and think 'what a knobhead'

the rest of the band (yes there is more to coldplay than chris martin) surelt they're gettin a bit pissed of with Martin getting all the attention, what with his hollywood actress wife ( i say actress in the loosesed of terms) and all that other crap he gets upto

Coldplay really arent as good as people seem to think

Re: Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

I take your point about them playing "safe middle of the road music" but I think they are a lot better than an "okay band", but in my mind they've made one very good and one great album, though this happens to be the sort of music that has made them cross the divide from indie all-so-rans (pre Yellow) to become a mainstream comercial success.

However, becoming popular isn't a crime, they have good songs and good lyrics which seem genuine without riverting to cliche. There are many "smaller" bands at the moment who could go the same way - Keane, Franz Ferdinand, to name but two whom both play relatively 'mainstream' music, no doubt if they're fanbase expands futher then they too will be deemed less 'cool'.

Sorry, I know you're not exactly slagging Colplay here (they're not my favourate band either), and your opinion of them is your opinion, but they're a lot better than a lot of other mainstream bands around at the moment. It just seems strange that something when it becomes popular, is given somehow less credence than it was before, despite it not having changed.

Notice, how its nice when a small band you like make it big, but once they do, you don't like them as much as before as they're not 'your' band anymore? Hypocritcial I know, but I've felt it myself a few times.

Don't know why I even replied to yur post really, the reply has not a lot to do with what you actually said. Consider this a general Coldplay post!

Re: Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

Good point: being popular isnt crime.

Coldplay have never been my favourite band, but seeing them get so big when i dont rate them as being that good just doesnt agree with me.

as for your point about band not being 'mine' any more, i just have to look at muse and idlewild to get your point. Idlewild lost their bass player and with it alot of their stage presence, but are (i think) still getting bigger, and Muse, i couldnt beleive they done an arena tour last year. After seeing both bands in small university gigs it feels strange to see them getting massive recognition for what they do.
But even though they are getting bigger and more recognition I think that both idlewild and muse's last albums are no where near as good as previous ones

Good points my friend!

Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

yeah, but surely muse and idlewild are a different case because their records have developed - you can see why 'joe public' has embraced 'american english'-era 'Wild and 'time is running out'-era muse over something like 'last night i missed all the fireworks' and 'cave'. whereas with coldplay, their two albums sound relatively similar to each other, non?

and didn't mad dog bob leave for this reason? or am i wronger than wrong?

Mainstream indie from before the revolution

so far as the two coldplay albums go. i think they sound pretty much the same. only the songs on the second one are far far better. i never understood how they were becoming so big, and definitely didnt think they deserved it, until i heard In My Place, and The Scientist.

I think muse (like the lost prophets) have really benefitted from doing a more mainstream album. and i find it far better than the prog (metal) they were doing before.

Idlewild. i loved remote part when it came out, but i think it is their weakest album to date. just doesnt stand up to repeated plays (much like snow patrol's final straw).

all thats just opinion. but i'd love to hear whether others agree or disgree.

Re: Mainstream indie from before the revolution

Being a die hard coldplay fan from when I was younger, I will always support them, but I guess I can see your approach. I've always jst loved their simplicity, and I think that any band that isnt manufactured and manages to build their way up from nothing deserves it.

Re: Mainstream indie from before the revolution

agree with you on idlewild and muse. i can't imagine 'The Remote Part' will ever surpass my feelings for that which came before it, and i'd rather listen to 'origin of symmetry' than trudge through 'showbiz' that often.

as for Coldplay, it might be that 'Parachutes holds some kind of sentimental value bathed in nostalgia, but at the time it felt better than listening to nu-metal. The second album seemed a bit too hit and miss. But just my opinion...maybe the hits outweigh the misses.

or something.

Re: Mainstream indie from before the revolution

"but at the time it felt better than listening to nu-metal"

i think you've put your finger on the secret of their success.

What the fuck did Metallica win?
Shittest band ever? Most pointless dull riffs in one song award? The Asterix look-a-like competition? Or maybe the how the fuck are we stil making music when we should all be in retirement homes award?

Still Evanescence won something so theres your explanation. Both awful bands.

Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

what about the most laughably earnest and overwrought lyrics award? stupidest fans award?

Coldplay and Outkast Win Top Grammy Awards

Shiver was th ebest thing Coldplay ever did in my opinion i think its fiar to say they have released one average (save for three songs) and one good album( with annoyingly trite but catchy melodies) essentially the problem with coldplay isnt there boring music its that they arent trying to change the world! With all the attention they have they dont say anything about themselves as people, or maybe they just aent very interesting people.
REM were a far more interesting band even when they became acceptable by the mainstream music market, simply because they did have ideas and were interesting people.

justin timblerlake deserves squat because his voice is high and whiney. it annoys me. he sucks. period. i dont get why people think he's hot. if he was an average looking guy, he would be nobody. i dont like coldplay either....
