REM May Call It Quits Next Year

REM's Peter Buck stated on US radio last week that the band could call it a day as early as next year.

When questioned about the future of the group, the guitarist replied: "Perhaps we'll call it a day next year, perhaps we'll never stop... sometimes I wake up at four in the morning in a hotel and I haven't seen my family in a couple of weeks and I just think, 'Ya know, I could go home right now...'"

Just so long as he doesn't catch the same flight as me on his way, I'm okay whatever his decision. If only Bono was my mate...

Let's face it, they died when hey released 'Up'. Nice try at a new direction but it didn't work. REM panicked and went back to doing what they have always done best, making records that sound exactly like REM, except this time it just wasn't the same.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

A bit like saying that 'Chinese Democracy' will be released this side of the second coming, really. Even if they do split, they've had a respectedable career- why the hell not call it a day before they go all Rolling Stones? (touring constantly andnever releasing new material)

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

Thank god that this maay actually be true, past it years ago and have only produce what can only be described as cack since.

Thing is tho that the Rolling stones had some many hits that they can afford to that, where as REM could never do just that alone

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

I quite liked Up, but I thought that Reveal was a piece of shit.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

fair enuff guv', you may have a point there.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

'up' had a few moments, reveal i thought also, it was shit. However i recon the next lp might just be back to business. :)

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

There was an interview around the time of New Adventures . . . when Peter Buck said as they are writing tunes for an album there will always be one song (inevitably thrown away) with a working title like Another Fucking REM Song. Up was a bad album, they were just trying to be Radiohead, and after that they resorted to making a whole album of REM songs. Reveal was boring, and I've heard nothing interesting from them since. Bad Day was shit aswell.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

No matter what there doing now there are still some amazing classics that people still want to see live, Man i wish id seen Rage before they split

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

just so happens i saw rage at reading '00. that was lucky, just in time.

they have to release one more album if they are gonna split...can't finish your career on a best of, and not a tremendous one at that.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

I think every band has that bit in their career where theyre top of the world and theyre never going to reach those heights again. For REM its 1991-92, when they were doing Out Of Time and Automatic. But I like their new stuff like Animal and Bad Day and the Reveal album. I think Imitation Of Life was one of their greatest songs ever. If you want to find a place where they 'jumped the shark' I think E-Bow The Letter on New Adventures. Thats a bad song. I think though Greatest Hits have to be representative of all that theyve done, so they should have put Shiny Happy People on.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

e-bow the letter is a fucking great song.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

I can't see why people slate 'Up' so much. Just looking at the singles - Daysleeper, Lotus, At My Most Beautiful - they're really good songs. It wasn't an outstanding album but it was easily as strong as 'New Adventures..'

Reveal, however, was REM by numbers without any inspiration. Insipid, boring pap. I think now's a pretty good time for REM to call it a day.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

You can't finish your career four releases into a five album deal...
they owe Warners one. That'll be out in September, I reckon (they always seem to release their albums in september), and then one last tour, and probably a good time to quit.

However, there's a new REM DVD out in February which is a live performance in Germany, and it's excellent. Still a great band.

and Ebow is a wonderful song. It's better than Imitation of Life. Animal is... nothing.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

Muchly suprised that everyone is against "reveal"..I am also of the opinion that it was incredibly dull & pointless but I thought I was alone in this. I like the one on UP about alligators, It's track 4 and I can't think of what it's called, it might be called "hope" actually. I like that a lot & the singles are ok.

"The Great Beyond" was good too I thought

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

aah!
this is ridiculous. the importance of rem cannot be overstated. their breakthrough in '80s america broke college radio wide open, gave rise to indie-mainstream crossover and lead to the rise of alternative ie interesting music in general. they consistently produce challenging, intelligent music, stand by their strong ethical point of view (well, michael stipe's anyway) and i can't help but think that if it wasn't for them, many of today's greatest bands would either not exist or at the least would not receive commercial airplay etc.
show some respect to the band that started it all fer chrissakes.
this site probably wouldn't even been here if they'd never released murmur.
long may they reign.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

Completely agree. Just read what the likes of Kurt Cobain, Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus have said about REM. Relative newcomers to the band probably haven't had the chance to understand what a huge impact they had on the American underground (and mainstream for that matter) back in the eighties. They're one of the most important bands of the past 50 years.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

"animal" is a great rem song. reminds me of the early rem period even of 'monster'. i think we can expect an interesting new record this year and i won't call it the last.

the guys have been on tour for quite a few months in 2003. peter might had his period when he was talking about rem's future. he is normally THE member who can't get enough of making music and going on tour.

whatever happens - r.e.m. are one of the most influencial rock bands of our time. no matter if it is their early style, their in the-middle-of-it-all or their up-2-date one.

Either way

They made some of the most wonderful albums of the 80's with Reckoning, Murmur and Lifes Rich Pageant. Those albums will stand the test of time. So really, I don't care whether or not they split next year. They've already made their mark on the history of pop music.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

probably for the best - that Stipe character doesn't look well does he - he wants to put his feet up and get some scotch eggs in him

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

have to say i've always found them quite tiresome and never understood the appeal. and no matter what he thinks he looks like a twat when he wears glitter.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

i found their music pretty average. nothing to write home about. no one will notice their gone. companies will just find another band to replace them!!

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

While I thought that New Adventures was probably their poorest album to date (making it so long didn't help, could have done with some editing!) E-Bow The Letter is easily my favourite R.E.M. song, so,erm, I disagree

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

I think u'll find a hell of a lot of people will notice they're gone!! They've been one of, if not the most influential and important bands of the last 20 years!

I admit that reveal wasn't v good, altho I've been high is quality, but i'm still lookin forward to their next record.

However, if their next album isn't a return to form then maybe it'll be time for them to quit, but they'll never be forgotten.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

they are the kind of band that can make excellent songs but the other of their songs are pretty awful, boring and basically, i couldn't care less whether they were still making records or not!!

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

Callan youre wrong. I think REM are as important and ertainly more prolific than say a band like Nirvana, and equally as good and influential. Nirvana only did 2 great albums ( Nevermind, In Utero) while REM have done more like 5 (Green, Out Of Time, Automatic, Monster, Reveal)

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

and thats not even mentioning the IRS albums which are all superb

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

perhaps i was wrong by saying that they won't be missed, but they are certainly not more influential than Nirvana, who basically layed out the path for bands like REM and other bands. they basically changed the face of music. no band can surpass Nirvana.

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

I read somewhere that "REM made the underground believe in itself, and Nirvana made everyone else believe in the underground"
REM broke through to the mainstream in 1987, and without their signing to Warner Brothers, Nirvana and every other shite alternative band in the 90s wouldn't have been nearly as successful.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

This Nirvana who 'layed out the path for bands like REM' would presumably be the same one who released their debut album a year after REM's major label debut (and 6th album)? And, erm, released their first big hit album in 1991, the same year as REM's first?

Certainly some remarkable path laying there!

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

There are a load of comments made by Kurt saying how REM were such a massive influence on him. What you don't understand Callan was that about 15 years ago REM were one of the most influential indie bands around and as someone else pointed out were the first real indie-mainstream crossover (not unlike what the Smiths represented here in the UK). Nowadays a lot of people only know them post - Automatic and subsequently do not realise how impt there were. Check out their first five albums and do a bit of history and you will see why they are namechecked so often by the likes of Nirvana and Pavement and Sonic Youth and Idlewild etc...

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

fair enough. i take it back

REM May Call It Quits Next Year

am i the only one who read the second part of this quote, 'perhaps we'll call it a day next year, PERHAPS WE'LL NEVER STOP' ? maybe i'm just an r.e.m. devotee who refuses to believe that one day they will finally have to retire, but this is just a typical peter buck comment. i really dont think they are giving serious consideration to quitting next year (please dont prove me wrong peter!)

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

dear friend,
i do agree the fact that they may be dead in US,but not in rest of world.Their latest hit collection is in top 10 in countries like UK,Australia and Europe.Simple truth is that Americans don't have ability to appreciate good music and they are blinded by mediocre rap and bubblegum pop music.REM will come back with a bang this year with a superb album.I am sure of that.

Re: REM May Call It Quits Next Year

With Stipey saying they're gonna tour for 8 months, it seems unlikely they'll split soon.
