Electronic experimentalists Matmos are to release their new album, The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast, through Matador in May.
According to Pitchfork, the new LP is something of a musical biography, with the twin protagonists of Schmidt and Daniel penning ten tracks that focus on the individuals that have helped shape their own lives. The band has told the US website that styles explored on the album include 'porn funk' and 'Arabic ragtime psychedelia'. Okaaaay.
The pair have said that The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast is their most 'fun' album to date, and guest vocalists include Antony (of And The Johnsons fame), Björk, and Marcus Schmickler. Tracklisting looketh liketh this...eth:
1 'Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein' (featuring Laetitia Sonami and Bjork)
2 'Steam and Sequins for Larry Levan'
3 'Tract for Valerie Solanas'
4 'Public Sex for Boyd McDonald'
5 'Semen Song for James Bidgood' (featuring Zeena Parkins and Antony)
6 'Snails and Lasers for Patricia Highsmith'
7 'Germs Burn for Darby Crash'
8 'Solo Buttons for Joe Meek' (featuring the Kronos Quartet)
9 'Rag for William S. Burroughs'
10 'Banquet for King Ludwig II of Bavaria' (featuring Maja Ratkje)
From the archive
I thought their last album was quite fun to be honest.
Also the 'porn funk' thing I'm sure I heard somewhere that they used to make music for porn films uncredited to make money.
I could be wrong. I often am.
this should be good
I like 'fun'.
Yay Matmos.
Two thumbs fresh.
Fuck
yes. I love matmos.
this should be aceness
songs for larry levan and darby crash make me smile.
4 'Public Sex for Boyd McDonald'
5 'Semen Song for James Bidgood'
Uh huh...
It's true.
Also, they met in a gay club, where one of them was an erotic dancer, so I suppose an autobiographical album will necessarily have some kind of sexual focus. Looks like a good one.
