DiS has gone through all the albums, singles and b-sides of the year (so far!) and put together a playlist of our favourite forty tracks for your exploration, deliberation and listening pleasure.
As we've done this using Spotify (visit Spotify.com to download the software) there's plenty of opportunity to wander off and discover more artists that you may like. Click this text here to stream this playlist

DiScuss: Love it? Hate it? Too obvious? Surprised by the inclusion/exclusion of anything? Two too many Animal Collective tracks? Basically, tell us what we should have added to this playlist (obviously we were limited a little by what is and isn't available on _Spotify) and make a better playlist and link it in the comments below..._

I've done something similar
only not including tracks from albums already released in 2009. So singles, remixes, b-sides and free downloads mainly.

When I get Spotify sorted proper I'll do this...
though additions would include:
Cursive - Caveman
Fanfarlo - The Walls Are Coming Down
Elvis Perkins - Shampoo

Andrew Bird - Effigy
Emmy The Great - First Love
Papercuts - You Can Have What You Want
M.I.A. - O...Saya
Laura Gibson - Funeral Song
The National - So Far Around The Bend
Dang, it's been a good year thus far...
Oh and Ashes In The Snow off the Mono album
is colossal
AND
Buriedfed by Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - all complementary to the very healthy list...
Ah
I'm not too savvy to the world of Spotify yet, it has to be said.
listening now
seems pretty good. I can't stand Andrew Bird though.
If Spotify had The Pains of Being Pure at Heart then I would have put Young Adult Friction on it.
Are you always going to restrict your choices by making lists Spotify playlists now?
I'd pick 'Buddy' off the Iran album over any TVOTR track
shame thats such a step above the rest of the album though.
I think more of this spotify collaborative and non-collab playlist stuff...
...should be done. Works pretty damn well in exposing people to new music, in my opinion. Great stuff.
La Roux?
ha that Skream remix of La Roux is a complete joke. Actually, its not funny, its disgusting.
They must a SHIT hot PR team behind them to get that on BBC 6. Pffft. The same as the cheeky girls prehaps?
nice mix of styles, DIS

You do know
that the list could change within the next 8 months, right?
Lists are list I suppose....
but no The Joy Formidable - Jeez give me strength.
We all have different tastes I can see that but the fact that no JF tracks appear on this list disappoints me more than I can say.
oh, i see its the first quarter of the year
me = not reading stuff properly
No Teitur?
i can't stop playing his record. wish emmy the great was on spotify.
That's a good playlist
Some there I haven't heard so will give it a listen
Nah, it's not on there.
Good record, though, like really good.
I'm pretty sure Float by Zomby was last year
I think he has only dropped a remix of Franz Ferdinand this year so far, I hope thats rectified soon mind.
LOL?
Andrew Bird, the king of bland music, on #1 /facepalm. Also Metric and M. Ward?! looooool
No space for John Frusciante?
Come on, that album is amazing. I'm not convinced singles from albums released last year should count (i.e. The Kills). And La Roux? Pur-lease, her voice is horrible.
Looks interesting apart from that though. Lots of stuff there that I've clearly missed.
Hearing Vulture again
it sounds better then i remember :D
Buddy is brilliant
one of my top 5 songs of the years so far.

I have no taste in music anymore :(
my favourite (not just singles+b-sides)
1. Fever Ray - Keep The Streets Empty For Me
2. Marissa Nadler - Heart Paper Lover
3. Antony And The Johnsons - One Dove
4. Royksopp - True To Life
5. Asobi Seksu - Me & Mary
6. Telepathe - So Fine
7. Mono - Ashes In The Snow
erm
this wasn't a list ordered like a chart, I just did a playlist which vaguely fitted together in a vague order.
honestly,
I think anyone who has actually given the album due consideration will see that while "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" was the single and most-showcased track, it is far from the best. It's really very blunt, actually, and coming from Morrissey that is a sad sign of decline. Its one soaring vocal hook right before the chorus is all that stand out, I think. Better contenders would be "Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed", or better yet "I'm OK By Myself".
I guess it's silly to contest matters of opinion... but, too late I suppose.
