Portishead are no longer signed to Island Records and are thinking what they could and should do next.
In a post on their MySpace blog Geoff Barrow has asked Portishead fans for "any bright ideas" regarding how they should sell their music in the future.
Dear Geoff, DiS suggests:
- making a collection of rare artefacts or artworks to sell to the highest bidders (as there's always some rich toffs looking to buy stuff from legendary bands).
- doing an 'every price point' option, much-like Trent Reznor did with http://ghosts.nin.com/.
- get paid for making a special P-shaped Microsoft Zune/Creative Zen and use that money as a prize for creative geniuses to make you five incredible viral videos.
The blog post read thus:
we spent the day discussing the future of the P as we are free…
well free of a deal and free of commitment… for now!
with the world being the way it is there are lots of options open…...but if you lot have any bright ideas of how we should sell our music in the future lets us know , why not!
i dont think that were into giving out music away for free to be honest…it fukin takes ages to write and we have to heat our swimming pools…..!!!
[SNIP]
take care for now
geoff {P}

Oh jesus
I thought we'd got over having "[Band] do a Radiohead" as every other music news headline. That phrase seems to have become a very tired cliche in a very short period of time.
I mean, what has this even got to do with 'doing a Radiohead'? That phrase is just a soundbite which now seems to mean releasing something with an unorthodox marketing strategy. Are Portishead doing that then? Not really no, but they might do in the future, maybe. And since he specifically says he won't be giving his music away free, I really don't see how this even qualifies as 'doing a Radiohead'.
I've never been compelled to say this before, but this is really lazy journalism.
...but they're not really at all, are they?
nme.com/news headline, that is
half interesting article
fucking stupid title.
"use that money as a prize for creative geniuses to make you five incredible viral videos."
I hate all this "we can't do anything clever so YOU, THE CREATIVE FAN* CAN MAKE US ONE AND GET UNDERPAID"
also, why do all videos have to be VIRAL videos these days? i'm only 20 and i'm sick of this!
*or not
