And the Mercury Music Prize winner is... ELBOW
- Artists:
- Elbow »
Elbow have won the 2008 Mercury Music Prize..
The winner is the much-loved Elbow for their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid. They're worthy winners, and so say all of DiS. Read our 9/10 review here.
When accepting the award from Jools Holland, the unofficial nicest man in music, Guy Garvey, said:
"This is quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us. I know I'm supposed to say something cool, but it's literally the best thing that has happened."

Nice try. Bands who deserve prizes don't win them.
I hope Elbow don't win :-s
they bore me so much...
I'm sticking
with my Laura Marling prediction
Hope Elbow wins though.
That Elbow video made me want to stove the screen in.
Fucking wack.
the guardian blog
says that they just played a video of a moody london estate for Burials bit so I guess he aint about hey...
Ahh well
I hope he wins anyway.
Its the best album on the list easily for me.
lol
touche ;)
they are better than Britsh Sea Power mind so that gives them some points...
agree
Elbow SHOULD win, but they will not (if they will, I WILL be VERY suprised).
My second favorites - Radiohead.
Then Laura Marling & Burial.
announcement of the announcement
for the 2008 Mercury Prize
:D
Srsly
once this is over can you go back to mentioning Burial five times a day instead of fifty five?
Saying that, I do like the album and hope it wins. Shame he's not there.
yes
untill he drops new material :)
haha
I love how they cut her off at the end.
Laura Marling
will NEVER win it. And I like her!
I used to think like you
then I listened to The Seldom Seen Kid. Fucking excellent, as I have said elsewhere...
I saw that.
Mega laul
elbow should win it
someone shit and not expected to win it will
wrong flippin place
what a nightmare of a day im having
don't
think so :)
I'm using Zattoo
Freeview only picks up shitty BBC Two Wales
Badabing
Good shout on Elbow
ah
its a little better now
Yes,
Great stuuf, well deserved!
Stuuuuuuuuuuuf
Indeed!
wowsers
didnt expect elbow to win
fucking amazing
over the moon elbow won.....not only did my bet come in but i fucking love that album and what a top top bunch of guys. brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
As much as i love Elbow...
it shouldve gone to Radiohead. They made the best album by far. Elbow shouldve won it for Cast Of Thousands in '02
lauren laverne WASN'T annoying.
and I adore Simon Armitage.
And on top of that, I said at the very last second that my final choice of winner was Elbow and they bloody did it!
How much
did you make?
I think it's a great album.
Fair play. Plenty of good contenders this year - Marling, Neon, Last Shadow were all excellently written/performed records IMHO..as welll as others that I've probably forgotten.
this year
with a cramped half hour show we got laverne and armitage
last year for two hours it was fucking whiley and holland and adrian edmondson. top marks BBC. well done.
I'm glad Burial doesn't have £20k
to spend on a new computer that would have ruined his sound...
but Elbow? heheheh
whats that all about.
i stuck a bet on the day it was announced
and got em at 7/1
i could have swore i put a tenner on but i just dug out the slip and it was only a fiver so 35 quid, which is still ace.
Good for Elbow
There were so many deserving winners this year, but The Seldom Seen Kid is so unassumingly brilliant. I listened to it 3 times before I realised that it was actually a work of genius. Elbow are often overlooked as a band, so it would be good to have the recognition for them.
great,
fucking dull band wins fucking dull prize, i cant wait for next year now!!
Who was on the judging panel this year?
A bunch of bloody corpses?!
forth album?
spelling with added verve?
...well done Elbow anyway - they deserve this level of recognition!
I was wondering this
does anyone acctualy know who the judges are?
I was wondering this
does anyone acctualy know who the judges are?
grace under pressure
ain't bad
I hate to be achingly fashionable
but seriously, if you can actually to listen to this album three times without falling asleep or changing to something more interesting you deserve a prize all of your own.
And I like Elbow. Asleep in the Back would have been a good winner. But I guess M People were a better bet back then eh?
oh yeah
I saw that
lolz
elbow better than burial. apparently.
ALSO
they played new romantic which isn't even on l.m.'s album. laaaame
Burial is water
Elbow are mud
No apparantly about it
by a fucking mile.
snooooooooooooooore
There was only one album on that list that should've got it in my opinion, and even then it most certainly was nowhere near 'album of the year' status. Pretty poor shortlist.
Asleep in the Back
is a good album, but didn't deserve to win the Mercury - mainly as PJ Harvey won that year and Rings Around the World was shortlisted as well. Plus since that award was given out on September 11th 2001 no-one would have noticed them winning the award anyway.
And they're not fucking boring.
I don't really care that much about the Mercury prize,
but any recognition that Elbow get is met with a massive grin and a small cheer in my house.
Lovely stuff.
Elbow sound a bit Coldplay to me
Especially that sound that has been all over the place recently.
Don't think it's as good as Cast of Thousands
but it's a pretty worthy winner overall. Clearly, this is a nod with the intention of projecting them to 'the nest level'. They have the potential to fill the enormodomes in years to come.
^*next
but nest level will do...
Nice to see some good guys win
and people like me pick up a few quid at the bookies.
The odds that I got were delicious
McNicholas
apparently.
One Day Like This
frankly, if I was on the panel, they could have the award for this song alone anyway, so fucking perfect in a Radio 2 but not shit kind of way that it is.
I wanted Laura Marling to win
It's a fantastic album & I had bet £10 she would. That'll teach me not to gamble, I'm usually dead against it but the nominations were announced a few days after I saw her live & she was completely amazing!!!
wtf?? Portico quartet was nominated?
That's amazing! Ohh and that video of them I was there for that. They are beautiful beautiful beautiful.
