Daily Mail reacts to MCR fan protest
- Artists:
- My Chemical Romance »
The Daily Mail (who recently ran the somewhat sensationalist headlines Why no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo and Girl, 13, hangs herself after becoming obsessed with Emo 'suicide cult' rock band) have reacted to today's demonstration by My Chemical Romance fans.
_"The Daily Mail’s coverage of the 'Emo' movement has been balanced, restrained and above all, in the public interest. Genuine concerns were raised at the inquest earlier this month on 13 year old emo follower Hannah Bond who had been self-harming and then tragically killed herself.
"In common with other newspapers we ran an accurate news story recording the Coroner's remarks and the parents' comments. We also published two other articles, one of which explained the background to the Hannah tragedy in calm and un-sensational language.
"The other was a first person opinion piece by a well-known writer, written from the perspective of a mother concerned for her children. We have also run two prominent page lead letters from an emo music fan and from a fan of My Chemical Romance defending their point of view.
"Our music critic admires the music of the band and publicised the band’s UK tour last year. Since this protest was announced a great deal of misinformation has appeared on the internet, much of which confuses what the Daily Mail has actually published with the comments of website readers and 'blogs' over which we have no control and which have stirred up emotions.
"We note it has been pointed out by others that all this provides wonderful publicity for Warners and their impending release of My Chemical Romance's latest album.
"The Daily Mail is a broad church and is always ready to listen to the views of readers. We do, however, suggest those who want to protest or comment read everything we have published and act on fact not rumour."_

"The Daily Mail is a broad church"
The day The Daily Mail is a church is the day mankind is truly doomed.
yeah well done kids,
dont bother protesting about wars and thwarted earthquake relief efforts in communist countries, just march on the most obvious of right-wing tabloids because they dont 'understand' it because they 'dont like it' or whatever.
Bollocks.
Go on their website - the articles are so bad that the majority of comments left below them by regular Mail readers point out how over-the-top they are.
I hate this paper so much.
^^ dont get me wrong
i hate that paper too, but their stories and editorials ARE so over the top that no one I know personally would take them seriously or be offended by them. its funnier than Viz.
^fuck off
so basically all protests are worthless unless they're regarding large scale events?
these kids feel that the daily mail is attacking and misrepresenting a band which is important to them. fair play to them for actually trying to do something about it. it's better than being completely apathetic.
the not funny bit is
people do read this paper for serious reasons. these are the same people who got massively offended by Brass Eye
The point is
that they're efforts could be much better placed than defending the reputation of a band.
Not a fan of MCR
But the Daily Mail are fuckers so anything that causes them grief is good. I never read the article in which they slated emo but from what ihear it was enormously ill founded so fuck 'em.
"...impending release of My Chemical Romance's latest album."
I thought that their last album was released last year?
'Balanced'? 'Restrained'? 'Accurate'?
LOLZA
Does anyone else die a little inside when they find out a seemingly respectable individual reads the Daily Mail? Unfortunately, it seems to be an all too often occurence.
Church of Daily Mail.......
No Coloureds, No Dogs, No Catholics, No Foreigners
how so?
surely theyve drawn attention to that fact that a lot of kids dont agree with the daily mail, gave the issue publicity (we are talking about it right now) and allowed a platform for those who can to criticise the daily mail?
But isn't there a wider issue?
That large swathes of the media are making out large groups of harmless people as subversive?
Its as if The Mail thinks that any young person who lives their life in any other way than a Boy's Own comic strip is somehow wrong.
Although I'm a fervent liberal I really try my hardest to accept different political viewpoints and I'll admit I can see the logic and values behind conservatism - despite not agreeing with them, but the Mail is just poisonous in its desire to attack the innocent in order to further its own ideology. Really it should just fuck the fuck off, so many people who write for it are terribly malignant wankers.
they've got a live CD/DVD thing
coming out next month called 'The Black Parade is Dead'
awe. some.
They have a live album coming out.
2nd live album from 3 studio albums = lame.
:(
My mum reads the Daily Mail and it really does makes me want to cry.
^amusing
well done (Y)
Do people actually care about this?
Surely its liking watching a bunch of small-town village pensioners argue with some teenagers?
Why is it that the Daily Mail get so much hate?
The Daily Express is basically the same thing, but alot worse and alot more desperate. It's borderline racist. So why do people always go after the mail, there's clearly a more obvious target!
i think
people consider the daily mail to have some sort of influence on mainstream society. i dont think they think the same of the daily express.
i loathe that paper with every fiber of my being ((on reaction to the frontpage on the sight of more than one headline, i have felt compelled to rip every copy out of the rack, take them out the shop and throw them in the bin)...but most people know the daily express is ridiculous. it's not really a threat.
^ This
According to wikipedia, 'in October 2007 show gross sales of 2,400,143 for the Daily Mail, compared with 789,867 for the Daily Express.'
I think the Daily Mail gets so much hate
because it essentially take all the resentment of the British people - the relics of the old empire and all that - and pushes it in completely the wrong direction, i.e. in the direction of everything not British.
I swear that the Madeline McCann thing would have hardly covered by the Mail if it'd happened in England. As it's abroad though, they instantly have a foreign scapecoat. It couldn't possibly have been the fault of someone from middle England with values and decency. Hmm.
Also, the Daily Mail seems to treat every issue as if it were black and white, stuff like calling for the government to cut duty on fuel etc. It's just not that simple.
I still
can't believe how many people I know (and love) in my elder generation that buy the Daily Mail - it really upsets me. Because after learning the basics of politics and rooting to buy the independent, I find it particularly difficult not to strangle all of them when I hear them talk about politics in the most non-sensical, ignorant manner.
The Daily Express is probably a tad worse - you get proper racists browsing about on their forum. But Daily Mail is bought by a mass audience making it all the more lethal.
The Daily Mail’s coverage of the 'Emo' movement has been balanced, restrained and above all, in the
EMOZ ALL HARM THEMSELVES. MCR AR THE ONES WHO TELL THEM TO.
Real balanced.
Is the Daily Mail the paper that...
always goes on about Diana??
Hm
The Daily Express are the main ones who rant on about Diana. Daily Mail do, but to a lesser degree.
"Since this protest was announced a great deal of misinformation has appeared on the internet, much of which confuses what the Daily Mail has actually published with the comments of website readers and 'blogs' over which we have no control and which have stirred up emotions."
What a load of shit. It's got nothing to do with the comments on the website, the articles themselves contain all the inflammatory sensationalist crap you need.
the daily hatecrime
once offered me 3K to sell out my then girlfriends uncle. they were relentless and said..."you don't need to say anything just agree or disagree with some statements"
MCR terrible band at worst. DM distilled evil at best.
The right to protest should always be encouraged no matter what the issue.
I dunno
I read some of those articles in the Mail and they were very sensationalist, ill-informed and biased covering the threat of the emo death cult.
Of course, it's not like newspapers really need to worry about fair and factual these days when there's a good scare story to get on the go.
Disagree with the last statement.
It's a simple and obvious logic that the more protests there are, the less sensation there is and the less anyone takes any notice of them. For example the Iraq protests got massive news coverage but if 2 million people marched through London protesting against something, no matter how trivial, every week then sooner or later it'd stop being newsworthy and no-one'd pay much attention to it. Plus 'cos you were given an equally outraged response to anything there'd be no way of distinguishing when you really felt strongly about something.
The right of protest is important and one people should use when necessary but it's something that needs to be used sparingly for maximum impact.
I do find an element of nonsense about this protest.
It does pretty much seem to be a lot of people marching to curtail free speech.
The Daily Mail article may well have been full of bullshit but, as they point out, they do have a right to reply (by writing to the papers or posting comments under the stories) and there is a Press Complaints Commission anyone is free to complain to if they feel a newspaper is out of order.
On the whole any protest much be to achieve something and I'm just not clear what this one is setting out to achieve given there are already channels in place to register dissatisfaction with a newspaper's content.
sorry
badly worded. I meant that they shouldnt be belittled due to their choice of subject. If its important to them all power to them. If you stifle the passion they show here then you diminish the chances of them feeling moved to protest in the future on issues that maybe considered more 'worthy'.
I agree re the sensationalist aspect.
Cheers,
I wasn't sure. I know my gran always reads a paper that goes on and on about that Diana woman.
the PCC
is a load of bollocks though
I agree with you on this
You can't stop the Daily Mail from publishing all these bullshit stories if people want to read them. The Daily Mail have every right to publish their shit and will continue to do so as long as you have the ignorant fools who lap it up.
It's a bit of a vicious circle though, we need some sort of cultural shift away from hateful ignorance, but that's not going to happen if newspapers such as the Daily Mail keep peddling it.
probably
would have been better to actually protest on a day when there would have been daily mail staff in the office though, no?
i don't think the march is in opposition to free speech
if anything it's an attempt to give a voice to the people whose voices have been excluded by the mainstream newspress in the coverage of this 'emo suicide' story.
If anything, however haphazardly they've done it these kids are finding trying to find a voice which balances out the bias in the reporting - I don't think they're saying the daily mail should never ever print anything about emo (of course they might be I'm not sure) but that if it is going to cover something then it should do it factually, honestly and in a way which takes in both sides of the story the way I think good news reporting always should.
of course, the mail can say (in private) this isn't just news reporting this is newspaper reporting and we can be as bile-fueled and wildly bias as we like and if you don't like then go and buy a paper that only covers things that enforce your own world view and leave us and our wilfully il informed prejudices alone.

"Since this protest was announced a great deal of misinformation has appeared on the internet"
The Daily fucking Mail complaining about misinformation? Ridiculous irony in there somewhere.
How has no one else got on to that one?
"Why no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo"
I swear The Times website had a similarly titled article. I only read them for sport now. I'd read the Guardian if their sports editor wasn't a fucking nazi.
Independent all the way.
this is rubbish
they are putting their effort into something they care about. Whether there are more worthy causes is irrelevant
me too
:'(
They should have
fire-bombed the offices to be fair.
I do think that a great deal of people who read it are aware of the bullshit levels within it. Not everyone though.
Not really emo is it
but that's another kettle of fish.
any
protest against a part of the mass media is as valid as a protest against war or famine. do the maths.

OK....
Country music!
On average, most suicides that have a soundtrack have a country music soundtrack rather than a Black Sabbath record going in reverse, a Marilyn Manson record or a My Chemical Romance record.
I've considered suicide whilst at a Go West concert in Butlins that my dad dragged me along to...
The Daily Mail
are ignorant snivelling cunts.
You know, there's a reason
I buy The Times...
