Er....

WTF?

Why in god's name

are they doing a Starbucks compliation?

I fucking hate Starbucks.

yeah! fuck starbucks!

for the cash blatantly

though I really don't hold it against them at all. fuck, the artist's gotta eat as well! It's a bold move by both parties, as sonic youth have openly criticised their label for being unable to find new ways of selling cd's and starbucks on the other hand have the pleasure of blasting out "world looks red" and "expressway to yr skull" in their cafes worldwide, music my sister used to refer to as 'torture music', which I for one am thrilled about.

Fuck indie principles, I'll be buying this

is a super cash in 'best of'

justified by a load of good artists/directers ect.

shame on you SY

yeah

what fucking bastards wanting to make money from their music. i'm glad us lot get to live in a happy socialist world of freedom where we get free rent and food and stuff. fuck them!

I think this is a pretty good selection

Sugar Kane is an underrated classic. As is Stones.

surely there is a middle ground though

SY are hardly struggling financially and surely there is no need for them to stoop to this level. Ugh

wasn't kim gordon quoted re the daydream nation DLB shows

that they were only doing that because they needed the money? as opposed to wanted...

Totally agree

Sugar Kane is an outstanding tune. No Dirty Boots though...wtf?

"SY are hardly struggling financially"

how do you know this? SY strike me as one of those bands whose influence and kudos far outway their actual popularity and record sales. their commercial peak was in the early 90s and even then Goo only sold about 250,000 in North America initially.

besides, they've been signed to the biggest music company in the world for the past decade, does it really make any difference if a hits CD appears through Universal or Hear Music?

thurston has been quite frank of late

about their decisions for the daydream nation shows and this compilation, he hinted that if the band had broken up in the mid nineties and reformed for shows recently a la pixies then they would have earned a substantial amount more than what they have by staying together for the same period.

And come on! 100% soundtracking your chai latte? what's not to like?

Sunday

would have been a nice addition

come on

they have sold a reasonable number of records, they have a big catalogue that remains in print and still sells, they still play big festivals and tours. I would be very surprised if they aren't very wealthy.

As for the second point fair enough I suppose, I just don't like Starbucks.

How much will this cost?

The only way to be punk rock these days

is to do the least punk rock thing you can think of?

Little Chef are releasing a Campag Velocet retrospective.........

all tracks will be selected by vaguely indie late twenties geography teachers from the East Midlands.

I dunno mang

I'm all for them making money but they didn't have to do something this lame.

i bitched about this at the time

but some kind soul pointed out that geffen arent the most independent of labels, and starbucks are probably better? And hey, they gotta make money aint they?

^^ exactly,

the whole notion of 'selling out' has been totally turned on its head because of illegal downloads, bands have to do things like this (although it is a shame.
i cant think there are many bands making any money from music anymore. are all these hardcore people going to pay Sonic Youth's bills and school fees for their kids? no they fucking arent.

Whenever I go into a Starbucks

I think ...these poor sods behind the counter hafta listen to Paul McCartney all day... and then I feel like I gotta tip them big.

Now they've got something to listen to and I'll save a few bucks. It's a win-win.

as i said

they've never had a HUGE selling record, which is where multi-millionaires rockstars make all their cash. plus, they self-release all the SYR stuff and blah blah.

i'm not saying that they're scrounging artists living in filth but they're also probably not motley crue or kiss like you seem to be supposing.

The only reason I wont be buying this is because I'm not a fan of best ofs

other than that, I don't think Starbucks are more evil than Universal so...

Go Sonic Youth!
