Erstwhile rockers The Smashing Pumpkins are suing Virgin Records, alleging that the label damaged the band’s credibility by licensing their tracks to Pepsi.
Keen readers of the internet may remember The Smashing Pumpkins as the band who signed exclusive deals with four major retailers to release five, ever-so-slightly tweaked versions of their most recent album Zeitgeist last year. Not exactly Bobby fucking Hood, aye Corgan?
So, for a band that clearly sold the baby for gin a while back, it seems strange to pursue such an action now. Perhaps The ‘Pumpkins are getting guilt pangs. Perhaps… or maybe they’re just after more cash-cash-money-money.
What’s that? Yeah, they’re demanding all profits from the Pepsi promotion in return for damages done to a “considerable amount of goodwill in the eyes of the public” that took “over two decades to accumulate”.
Yeah, it took a while, didn't it.
