NME announces 2007 Cool List
As inevitable as the debate that’ll follow it, the NME have released the latest installment of their annual ‘Cool List’.
This year’s list, which asserts that ‘Punk Is Cool’, features lairy Gallows ginger Frank Carter in the top spot, with Jamie Reynolds of Klaxons just behind him. Lovefoxxx (CSS), Ryan Jarman, (The Cribs) and Lethal Bizzle complete the list; which – if it wasn’t for the appearance of Jarman – DiS would suspect was to be read upside down.
What else? Well, Brandon Flowers’ facial hair trumps its owner by 26 places; Tim Harrington makes an appearance and Prince sits sandwiched awkwardly at the aftershow between Babyshamble Drew McConnell and Tom Clarke of the Enemy.

Last year's positions in brackets
Says NME editor Conor McNicholas of the list: “Thirty years after the height of punk there are a whole load of new bands making wild and passionate noise. But it takes more than just great music to make it to the top of the Cool List - these people effortlessly set trends with every breath they take - and it's great to see that people like Keith Richards prove that you don’t have to be young to do this!"
You kids, wild for ashes.

Tim Harrington
is the coolest person on this list.
TIM HARRINGTON
Thank god, finally someone half decent.
Thumbs up Tim
I would too if he let me.
while the whole concept
angers/disgusts me, i dont understand how say, noel gallagher or nicky wire got on a "cool list". Certainly wire is the antisthesis of what the nme would call cool nowadays (which i spose, makes him cool. hang on...
yawn yawn yawn
like I care...?
I don't care if he's changed it by deed poll
I'm still gonna call him Chris Carter.
nice No. 31 reference
Also, 18: lol.
Ha haha ha
Ian Brown? Ooh he's sooo cool!
Even though this is the most ridiculous thing NME does
the list often makes amusing reading. You wonder what exactly leads to people being on this list, eg Drew McConnell - Babyshambles, Andy Burrows - Razorlight. Or Meg White?? Even though I love the White Stripes, how does pulling out of a tour due to anxiety lead to coolness?
I love the NME cool list
Its perfect for showing up the magazine for exactly what it is.
jeez
this is hyperlame even for an NME Cool List
:-S
"these people effortlessly set trends with every breath they take - and it's great to see that people like Keith Richards prove that you don’t have to be young to do this!"
Strange, I don't recall ever wanting to be like Doherty, Amy Winehouse, etc.
I did dye my hair cherry red like Patrick Wolf did. But that's okay because I actually like him.
if all those people
were together in one room, i would happily bomb it.
I might allow Carlos D to leave first but i'd accept his demise on the basis that Interpol peaked in 2001. And i have nothing against the Les Savy Fav guy.
Other than that, it just reads like a list of people i hate.
He speaks his mind don't he
He has a good understanding of all the world's problems and comes up with viable solutions like putting cows on the white house.
In what alternate parallel universe is
Nicky Wire cooler than Josh Homme or Carlos D or Dev Hynes?
Eddie Argos must be pretty happy with #23 on that list though. Doesn't make up for the fact that they never got a #1 single on TOTP though.
Startling omissions!
Where is the House of Lords from the Young Knives?
This yearly shitfest is truly disgusting... I knew i'd want to punch my monitor as soon as I saw it.
Interesting to see no Carl Barat...? I didn't think Interpol were still down with the NME crowd
Where
is Bono?
Not because I want him on there, mind you, but because NME seems to have attempted to make the worst list ever and seems to have forgotten him.
The NME have been bumming FOTL recently
Yet Falco isn't in it. Coolest dude around surely?
one day..
Conor McNicholas will die at my hands. I'll probably run him over on my bike.
do they still do this rediculous list?
fucking cunts!
Is this Kev Kharas
Friday fun 'news' item?
Ctrrl + F
:(
bastards!
Does anyone actually
still read this yawnfest?
Nicky Wire??
The Manics fan in me is happy that they're getting more publicity... but seriously?
Although he does appear to be better than 90% of the people on that list anyway, and that's saying something.
This seems incredibly arbitrary.
Not to mention plain stupidly wrong in most instances.
But I suppose it gives an idea of who NME will have 'discovered' come January time.
What factors is this list based on?
I'm having real trouble working it out this year, worse even than usual - if the defining quality of everyone on the list is that they "effortlessly set trends with every breath they take", what the fuck is Plateface Razorlight Drummerboy doing in there?
And no Kate Jackson this year? Shameful.
Anyone who is cool in rock is not on this list
and that is how best to gauge it. I am not on it and I am sub zero, neither are you which makes you all totally awsome too!
The Avangelist Cool List
1. Anyone who still goes to live shows.
2. Anyone who buys a record that isn't available at Tesco
3. Carslberg Export, may you reign on infinitum!
I wonder
if they've got Prince's permission to use his name in that list. He'll sue their asses. Hold on though....
What happened to Faris Rotter
He was number 2 last year.
Also where is Aaron Angus - surely he's the meaning of cool?
Thumbs up for Tim Harrington (are you sure there really are 30 people cooler than him?)
Can't beleive
i wasted 30 seconds of my life reading this...Carlos D's tache is way cooler than Brandon Flower's btw...
^
this (well not Diver's this)
Also, good call on Frank- but like we didn't see that one coming?!
i love the nme when it's like
"and it's great to see that people like Keith Richards prove that you don’t have to be young to do this!"
so did this list just fall into your office? this is the Official Cool List sent by our Lord and Saviour? oh right, you're just being arrogant arseholes. grate!
a ginger at the top of the cool list?
wow! I like Gallows, but it's strange how this year's number one is almost the complete opposite of Beth Ditto, last years number 1. I just hope Gallows are intelligent enough not to buy into NME's obvious plan to push 'nu punk' as some sort of fictional scene they have made up to sell to the kids.
they
clearly arn't! him being #1 proving this, and every other shit article they have had...
Think About It
How many of these people are on major labels? It's a marketing exercise that is trying to sell records in a different way. Guaranteed that who ever is on that list has either been hyped to death by NME already or will be in the next 6 months (Joe Lean, Does It Offend You, Yeah? etc etc).
Payolla. Nothing more. Nothing less.
will
probably be a lyric on the cribs next album..
keith richards
is possibly the uncoolest person I can think of.
Suki from the real heat
i have snogged her! WOAH!
spider webb
beautiful hair.
So she's in the same elite club
as Laetitia from Stereolab then?
Bizarre...
...as usual. Loving the inclusion of Nicky Wire, it's a rather odd thing for NME to do but then they have been bumming the Manics all year. I guess supporting a non-cool thing makes it cool...or something. Patrick Wolf is too low, but ultimately this is a load of bollocks.
How can one member of Klaxons be cooler than the other?
Just cos he's shagging whasserface from CSS? That's ridiculous. The editor seems to have been a little more careful this year with his statement, after last year's, "it proves you can wear stilletos and still rock a stage"...
"they set trends with every breath they take"
....you cunt.
haha this list actually reminds me of the line in barley
..."cool people will think its cool, stupid will hate it, also cool"
startling ommission
the wombats..
and that idiot from the courteeners.
NME have been hyping both to death recently.. i see they have got that joe jing jung cunt in there somewhere at least.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
very predictable choice, I loved orchestra of wolves, (dont care for staring at the rudebois but thats neither here nor there), so when the inevitable NME backlash on Gallows comes (see Selfish Cunt, Fratellis, the Twang, Reverend and the Makers) and their dropped from Warner i'll rue the day this cool list was ever published.
damn
you got there before me to say this!
That's
"EFFORTLESSLY set trends with every breath they take" - like, GET IT RIGHT! ;-)
Steff, the drummer
is the coolest member of klaxons.
wow
i'm glad I don't live in the UK anymore. this is fucking ridiculous, I don't even know half these names. Tim Harrington and Cole from Black Lips, only two that get my vote. I guess I still sorta like Karen O and Beth Ditto, as for the rest, gna?!?
