EELS: officially around for ages
- Artists:
- Eels »
Slightly wonky, totally upper-case LA outfit EELS will celebrate officially being around for ages by releasing a couple of CDs in the new year.
Led by, and mainly consisting of, Mark ‘E’ Everett, EELS will mark their first decade by releasing first a Best Of and then a 50-track, double-CD collection of rarities, both on the 21st of January 2008.
In the meantime a documentary centring around E and his quest to learn more about his late father, famous quantum physicist Hugh Everett III, will be premiered on BBC4 on the night of November 26th in the UK at 9pm. Soundtracked by EELS, Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives marks the 50th anniversary of Everett Snr’s controversial parallel worlds theory.
On the train back from geekville, the 24-track Best Of, entitled Meet The EELS: Essential EELS Vol 1 (1996 – 2006) has these songs:
‘Novocaine For The Soul’
‘Susan's House’
‘My Beloved Monster’
‘Your Lucky Day In Hell’
‘3 Speed’
‘Last Stop: This Town’
‘Climbing To The Moon (jon brion remix)’
‘Flyswatter’
‘I Like Birds’
‘Mr. E's Beautiful Blues’
‘It's A Motherfucker’
‘Souljacker pt. 1’
‘That's Not Really Funny’
‘Fresh Feeling’
‘Get ur Freak On’
‘Saturday Morning’
‘Love of the Loveless’
‘Dirty Girl (live at town hall)’
‘I Need Some Sleep’
‘Hey Man (now you're really living)’
‘I'm Going To Stop Pretending That I Didn't Break Your Heart’
‘Trouble With Dreams’
‘Railroad Man’
‘Losing Streak’
It also has a DVD with twelve EELS videos on. The rarities collection, EELS: Useless Trinkets, has too many tracks on it for me to list here, but you can check it out on this very page right here.

i hate this band
cheer up ffs
all his family are dead
so he had an excuse.
and he's happy now anyway. so ner.
have you heard Electro Shock Blues?
if not you really should try and hear it. When you realise the context it's written within it only becomes all the more poignant. I <3 eels and had no idea his dad was Hugh Everett III until reading this article. His many worlds theory is fascinating, if bizarre.
i own it actually
although i've only listened to it a couple of times it didn't really do anything for me. I suppose i should give it another chance (such is the weight of popular opinion)
Blinking Lights definitely sucks though
ESB
is easily in my favorite 50 albums ever.
I love this band
and Electroshock Blues is one of my favourite albums ever.
I have no need to get the Greatest Hits (I'll pick up the rarities collection probably) so I shouldn't care about the tracklisting but...no PS: You Rock my World? Madness! That song's made to be a closing track (one of my favourites closing tracks to boot), it fits perfectly on ESB and it'd fit well on this too.
.
No P.S. You Rock My World is indeed a shame. As is no Cancer For Cure, especially seeing as it was a single an' all. But I'm glad there's a new version of Climbing To The Moon- a lovely sad song, although not as great as Dead Of Winter.
Damn, ESB is great.
oh gosh
I want this rarities one so much.
No Dead of Winter
is a bit of a shame. One of my favourite albums too.
Blinking Lights
totally sucks. Anything after Souljacker is bad save the odd song.
My first ever gig.
50 indie-cred points to me.
blinking lights
is his best album.
E once did a five minute
rant at me from the stage because he thought i was someone else. does that gain more or less indie points?
More
if you expand on the story. Otherwise less.
there was a huge thing going on
at one of the daisies of the galaxy shows in portsmouth. it was seated but people wanted to stand up/dance about. some people were drunk and very vocal about it, and were distracting E from doing quiet songs. after it had died down a bit, between songs i requested Not Ready Yet, and he thought i was a drunky. he then went on a 5 minute rant about 'masculine morons showing off, stupid drunk idiots, etc etc'. it lasted for quite a while. it was quite awkward.
A bit dissapointing live
They used to be one of my favourite bands, possibly the favourite especially around Electro Shock Blues time. But live they never really did it for me. Of the times I saw them the reading show was pretty good but the others he always seemed pretty pissed off, which didn't make for a good atmosphere. And the later ones, whenever they played any old stuff they decided to do 'comedy' versions of the songs. Also with the albums, it all seemed to go wrong after Butch left.
eels.
i adore this band, yet never really go around saying it. It's just given I think.
Their 'Strings' gig in Nottingham was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
Eels with strings
at the albert hall in top 10 gigs EVER.
Especially cos he started well late and I had got stuck on a not-working northern line. Thanks E.
one of the monolith songwriters of our time
I adore Eels. I really love the humanity in E's songwriting.
And as for the depressing comments thats bollox - even electro shock blues is full of humour. Personally I find Eels very uplifting, there's always a great optimism to be got from the survivalism in E's lyrics. Just listen to Fashion Awards and try not to smile. It's impossible.
Yeah PS: you rock my world is a big miss. Would have liked Rock Hard Times on there too
Personally I find Electro Shock Blues a great album but I find their zenith was Shootenanny.Combining rock, pop, melody and great lyrics it really should have won a lot more backing than just Tom Waits' public adoration. I think Souljacker has some filler and Blinking Lights is a little long and a wee bit flabby but there's still bags of quality from after Electo Shock Blues
I'll always remember first seeing them supporting Pulp in Cardiff and dressing up and doing judo during the gig.Bizarre.Live I think they're wonderful but not suited to big audiences because they don't play to the norms of playing live. The Daisies of the Galaxy tour had the whole seating thing but there were still loads of people who wanted them to rock. They didn't want to play the game. And i respect that.Sweet-b-jesus : when you go to see a band let them try to be different and make the event special!
P.s. check out on the rarities album : I want to protect you and Fucker. 2 fantastic hidden gems.
good stuff
I'll be getting the rarities one anyway. Some of those tracks are great.
I really like Eels live shows - I've seen E in both a very bad and very good mood but they've always played really well. He did almost have a fit one time because no one would be quiet so that Butch could sing, but at the other end he's always willing to do a few encores and once ran in through the crowd slapping people's hands.
Levity
Anyone know how much of the Levity soundrack's gonna be on here? Been meaning to buy that for ages.
