Radiohead sign to XL

Radiohead have confirmed the much-whispered rumour that In Rainbows will get a physical release through British indie label XL.
The album (review), which made its famed entrance to the virtual realm on the 10th of October, is now expected to be released on CD on the 3rd of December – to coincide with the release of the £40 discbox, reports Billboard.com.
There remains the possibility, though, that the CD release will come later; possibly conscientious of those enthusiasists who are £40 lighter.
The deal covers those markets outside North America, so there is scope for a separate release there; perhaps through a different label. Cash cash, money money.
XL Recordings, working under the Beggars Group umbrella, released Thom Yorke’s solo record The Eraser last year.

stuart murdoch
will be so dissapointed.
bit of a con
not sure if this is a good move or not but when i forked out 40quid for the diskbox i didn't expect that a physical version (with out the extras) would be available at the same time
Great news
but get a new picture!
Where has the release date
been confirmed? No-one else is reporting it as 3rd Dec
nice gesture
almost entirely fucked up
expect an itunes release of the extras cd
in time for christmas
now that's a band
that think only of art...
don't be so sanctimonious
XL and radiohead seems like a pretty good fit to me
all this bollocks about challenging the record industry came from the media not the band itself, what the download release did was pre-empt enivitable leaks.. instead of the album filtering out slowly eveyone got to hear it at the same time, a jesture i find pretty admirable..
FIGHT THE POWER
hey Radiohead, at least you didn't completely rip off your loyal fans. Oh wait, YOU DID. Sorry, my bad
How did they rip
off their loyal fans? By giving you the chance to download it for free? The label choice was hardly suprising now was it? It's good news, i agree with will126849.
by making them pay £40
for what is (espescially to non-vinylists) an exquisitely packaged cd, on the proviso that you either get the low quality mp3s (also a rip off to anyone who paid a reasonable amount of money) or be a true fan and buy the box - no middle ground
They then release it on unexquisitely packaged cd at around the same time as the "special edition" for a much lower price
RIP OFF.
Simply put,
I just do not believe they ripped people off if they offered them the thing for free, the quality of the mp3s is debatable but they are of decent enough quality to appreciate the brilliance of the album. Also, who knows yet if the discbox will be worth £40? It seems, from all accounts, like it will be, and to buy it without being a vinylist must be done with the awareness that you are about to pay for more than you can actually listen to, plus the knowledge that they were going to release it on CD sooner or later was never a secret.
okay..
but the impression i got was that the cd would be released some time after the boxset, only satisfying the stragglers. But if they're being released at almost the same time then i'm sure a lot of people will feel like the cd only option was the right one(and if the release specifics were more clear they might have chosen as such)
True,
but as they had no record deal at the point of the self release, well it wasn't public knowledge, i guess they were unable to give a truely accurate idea of the release date for the CD.
I simply don't believe
that people bought the box-set as an alternative to the cd. It was reported that the cd would be out soon so people (like myself) just waited for an announcement on the cd.
I only started feeling ripped off
about the £40 I'd spent once I'd actually heard the album. I don't like the album nearly enough to want hard copies in two separate formats, fancy artwork or not. I don't agree with a single review I've read about the album, compared to everything else they've done (solo outing included), it's lightweight and half-arsed. Those bonus tracks better be fucking fantastic.
They played with the media when
they could have easily make a big statement stating exactly what was their point. Good publicity act !
Fact is : they'll get money from people by 3 ways : download - simple CD - boxset ( which I continue to say is at a stupidly high price ) and some people I'm sure will give money 3 times.
I don't have a problem with bands making money.
BUT if you're talking about sounding sanctimonious, I so hope that now Mr Yorke will shut up...
they knew
finding a label was not a problem and that the CD could be released very soon.
The incredible number of download just gave them a good leverage to get the better deal they could...
your contradicting yourself though
your first point was that they'v played the media off precisley by saying nothing and then you say that you hope thom yorke will shut up.
Truth is thom yorke hasn't really said anything about the downloading/ record company issue.. (at least not to my knowledge)
not contradicting myself
just hope he'll shut up forever...
but......
the boxset isn't a high price, for 2 CDs and two LPs and two books in a lovely box it's pretty good.
And people aren't being forced to buy it.
AND it said on the "in rainbows" site that "FOR NOW" it was only available there. Within days there were stories of a CD release.
I honestly don't think that they meant the download thing as a publicity stunt, the media just latched onto it as something really important, when all it is is a band letting people pay what they like for mp3s.
And if people ordered the discbox and now don't want it because the normal CD is coming out, you can always cancel your order...
Now everyone stop moaning and saying they've been "ripped off" and stuff, and get back to work.
yep
my grasp of tenses and grammar is lacking somewhat there, but I do not cares.
the music
seems to be getting overshadowed by all this releasing methods etc
yes! my guess was right.
ish. :)
.
So many people on here get a semi at an excuse to hate Radiohead.
I'm intrigued
to see how many copies this sells. Having already been made available digitally (for any price you care to pay) I wonder how many people will buy the CD as well?
I've read so many articles about 'the death of the music industry' over the past couple of weeks I just can't stop thinking about it!
I'm undecided
I've got the download - and I love it. I do prefer having CDs wherever possible, but then again, I've "borrowed" a lot of albums from friends on mp3 format, and I haven't gone out an bought a single one of them.
Shit. R1@@ on my @$$.
well...
it is important to note that not everyone has the ability to download as well. my computer is shit. luckily a mate copied it for me, i for one have no problem them releasing it. you have the choice after all. and also, you're pretty daft if you offered money for it in the knowledge you could get it for free.
to be fair..
They hated doing that.

lyle's greatest post
I'm astonished by this.
You didn't have to pay a penny to hear it. Not a dime. I didn't, and I certainly don't have a guilty conscience about it. Why would you fork out 40 quid before hearing it, then download it, not like it and regret spending the money? After all, you should think about an investment like that...
Sounds like you need to get your own priorities straight. I really liked it, so I'll be glad to form out 10-12 quid for it when it comes out proper.
I want to hear from...
People who paid for the MP3s and people who bought the box set. Do you feel hard done-by? Would you have paid if you'd known there would be a standard CD released?
I bought the box set and I'm still glad I did, only because I'm a fan and want the 2nd CD. But if they go and release that 2nd CD separately as well, I'm going to be pretty annoyed. I definitely wouldn't have bothered with the box.
i paid
precisely nothing for the mp3s knowing full well they would release a standard cd of the album at some point and that I would buy it when they did. Everybody's happy.
I bought
the discbox, so I could get the mp3s when they were released and get a wonderfully packaged collectable box in a few months. I knew a 'normal' CD would come out so I'm not bothered. £40 is a decent price for something that's lovely. And I already have the mp3s to listen to whenever I want anyway.
No problems here.
that's saying a lot
about the quality of my posts then...
"There remains the possibility, though,

£40 is indecent
...I've been waiting and waiting for the new radiohead release. Then suddenly it's released as low-quality mp3s and after all the wait I still haven't listened to all of it - mp3s just don't have any value and are advertising tools at best - if I'm paying for an album then I want something tangible, on a physical format that I can hold, look at and keep somewhere, so bring on the cd which I'll buy on the day it comes out. The discbox is a complete rip-off though - I don't want or need the extra vinyl, I just want an extras cd and with that price tag, don't Radiohead just know it! Fair play for shafting the prospective major labels but at what price the hard-core fans?
The Girls Aloud special Edition
is going to have pictures of them on the cover and all kinds of cool shit like extra tracks!
Now thats commitment to fans...
Well...
No one's forcing you to buy the discbox. If you think it's not worth your money, or it's just too fucking expensive, then you might as well just wait for someone to upload the extra tracks in some file-sharing community. (Oh, it's going to happen, trust me.)
