The nominations for the Mercury Music Prize are hot off the press, folks, and it’s a rum old mix as ever. They are as follows:
The Young Knives Voices Of Animals And Men’
Jamie T Panic Prevention
Bat For Lashes Fur And Gold
Klaxons Myths Of The Near Future
The View Hats Off To The Buskers
Amy Winehouse Back To Black
Basquiat Strings Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford

Current odds after Mike Diver scarpered quick-sharp down the bookies are looking like this: Arctic Monkeys / Amy Winehouse 4-1, Klaxons / The View 8-1, Dizzee Rascal / Jamie T 8-1, 8-1, Bat For Lashes / The Young Knives / Fionn Regan 10-1, and the rest... 12-1.
Sam Strang is tipping Klaxons at 8/1 or Bat For Lashes at 10/1 – what do you think? Any glaring omissions this year? Howlers, etc?

NYPC?
HAHAHAHA.
No Bloc Party?
And even though they've split, The Cooper Temple Clause were worth a nomination. Especially if The View are.
fionn regan!
i'm startled to see that there.. but very happy too.
if there's any justice, he'll win. but there isnt, so itll be Amy bloody Winehouse.
ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha
justice
+
where is...
...patrick wolf? disappointing. my vote goes to Bat For Lashes, wouldn't mind the Young Knives doing it though. other than that, the list is pretty boring and predictable.
Worst shortlist
in years.
No Twilight Sad :(
Is Seb Rochford
ever going to be nominated for Acoustic Ladyland, or just for his side projects?
what the fuck
why the fuck are the View on that list?
yeah, any justice Fionn Regan or Bat For Lashes.
It's looking pretty mainstream...
I'm clearly a pleb...
I thought that might have been a woman. Sorry. (goes to naughty corner)
Fionn, I mean...
nm.
Thank god
the enemy weren't nominated as touted, but i agree, where the f**k is P Wolf, or Field Music for that matter, or Good Shoes!!!
Overall, quite a crappy list. Fionn Regan has my vote though.
Quite possibly
the weakest list yet, Bat for Lashes, The View, Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal's incredibly weak effort
However, thinking about it, in the last year most of my favourite releases have come from outside the UK
Apart from Klaxons, The Young Knives and Maps...
this list is utter utter tripe. Arctic Monkeys? AGAIN?! Fuck off, they're shit. Where is TCTC, The Twilight Sad, Cherry Ghost, Fields or Kubichek!?
it won't be
the ones who have won before, the view or the klaxons, bat for lashes or jamie-t would be my bet, but i haven't heard many of the albums, so any could be good.
my money (if i had any)
is on DiS tip for 2006 Jamie T and also Bat for Lashes whose debut single we released. only other who stands a chance of being a worthy winner is Fionn Regan. I thought these awards were meant to represent creativity, cultural significance and innovation?
maps too
the maps album is excellent, im really pleased to see it recognised on that list.
Me too
Thats the only entry I'm genuinely happy about, it's such a great album.
bad list
what is that roachford project like?
i fucking love him
Young Fucking Knives!!!!???
For a minute I thought it was the award for worst band/album ever! Utter balls.
Klaxons please, although Monkeys would be amusing.
And for all those suggesting TCTC, you're just being silly. Their final album was very poor, especially in comparison to its predecessors. Thank you.
It's amazing how bad this list is
compared to the canadian equivalent - http://www.polarismusicprize.ca/
To be fair to UK artists, the list could have been so much better.
i bet
Jamie T, not personal opinion but thats my bet.
meh
I thought field music were worth inclusion, far better than anyone on that list. The only one I'd like to see win is The Young Knives.
It'll be Jamie T or Winehouse though.
I'd bet on Winehouse
but they'll probably be too worried about her potentially falling over in a drunken stupor during her winners' speech.
She's most likely still I guess, since they won't choose the Arctics again, and her album has been really successful.
can i sense
a wee horn toot here?
this is without a doubt
the worst mercury list ever.
it has made me cringe.
the only album i like on the list and who i think deserves it, is fionn regan..but it will probably be the sodding klaxons.
EUGH EUGH EUGH
Much to be expected really
With a couple of good ones, the ramdom ones you've never heard of, the odd wtf nomination (NYPC?!) and a fair serving of dross. Just reminds me each year that most of the best albums aren't british. my favourite there is klaxons but expect it to go to Jamie T, not a terrible choice.
I'm just surprised to learn...
...that Bat for Lashes are from the UK. She looks like a proper Scandinavian loony. I'm a bit disappointed now.
I wish they were called
the young fucking knives.
I'm going to stop commenting about them now.
Did they
nominate The View for a joke or do you think they're deadly serious?
WHAT THE FUCK?!
nypc
the view?
give me strength
.
Klaxons or Arctic Monkeys for their subcultural cache, with Bat For Lashes as the 'quality' choice (even though I don't really rate her) and Jamie T as the outsider people's champion type contender (a la Dizzee when he won).
No Field Music.
The View and NYPC.
Good one.
Hope Maps win.
very weak list
and where is the random skronk/world music entry?
It'd be cool to see maps win, but it is going to be arctic monkeys or klaxons
Where are...
...Malcolm Middleton and Patrick Wolf? Shocking. Especially when they've included The View and Jamie fucking T
I don't care who wins
but if it's The View or Amy Winehouse, I'll see you at the airport.
Bat For Lashes!
Yay! That and Fionn Regan makes up for the boringly-shite inclusion of Amy Whingehouse and Jamie "I'm Shite" T.
Am I right
in saying it's called the Mercury MUSIC Prize? Then how did The View actually qualify? Anyone?
she's
English. In fact, there's a "me and my instrument" thing on Youtube (forget what it was actually for first) in which she sounds like an incredibly dippy-type Englishwoman. so there you go.
no it's not,
it's an award. why would it be right?
No :)
"Nationwide Mercury Prize"
But I agree with the sentiment. Cockawful.
If that was a one-day festival line-up
I probably wouldn't go.
But then: people asking where Patrick Wolf is? Quite rightly missed off the list, as his last album isn't very good. So maybe it would have fitted in, to be fair.
what has happened to british music?
The Young Knives album is probably the best one on there, and it is still pretty damn average - the production is so flat!
My early money is on Jamie T. Mark my words. I get it right every year. Apart from when that percussionist guy won.
i actually
predicted last year that jamie t would win the mercury. do i get a prize?
Exactly
I p2p'd their album yesterday...gone straight into the trash can, utter cack!!!
Thank god I never parted with hard cash for it.
WTF no Biffy whats going on
no wonder the industry is in such a mess. I predict that Amy Wine will win.
I call...
... Jamie T. I've called it since his album was out and i'm sticking to it!
The Enemy
only failed to make the shortlist because the View and the Arctic monkeys fill the quota of 'overrated self-proclaimed working class poet types' the prize seems to obssess about each year before awarding it to a bruschetta munching lovely (or the Arctic Monkeys as a double bluff).
But NYPC. wtf?
I'd like to see Jamie T or Klaxons win it. But it'll be la Winehouse.
well....
As usual, the shortlist is generally cack.
Let's not forget though that this is an industry award (that carries an entrance fee) and at the very least will ensure that bands who have had money invested in them by major labels will feature heavily in ad campaigns and in-store promos helping recoup some of the dollars. It has always been this way and always will be.
Oh well
at least they haven't decided to throw the fratellis, kasabian, the enemy and the pidgeon detectives in there to make the list worse. Oh and to all those who say worst list in years, when was there ever a good one? Go have a look at for example 2003,04,05 those lists will really make you laugh. Or some of the others where the spice girls, Robbie Williams and M people were nominated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_music_prize
"I thought these awards were meant to represent creativity, cultural significance and innovation" [s
From their own promotional blurb:
"The Mercury Music Prize exists solely to champion UK music. All genres of music are eligible and all albums are treated equally. The music on the album is the only thing taken into account."
No shouts for SMD?
Field Music should be on there too. I'd love to think Bat For Lashes will get it but it's gonna be Klaxons basically innit? Most cultural significance with the whole nu-rave fad. Still a worthy winner i guess. As long as The View don't win i won't take my own life
every year
is the worst shortlist in years. if the comment pages on this site are to be believed.
that said
there's less here i've liked than in the last year or two (i remember 2003 and possibly 2004 were dreadful), for what that's worth
it'll be
Jamie T or Amy Winehouse, because both are very popular with the Radio 1 Idiot crowd and have recieved some half-decent press.
and, of course, they're both fucking awful.
(though when i think about it, what was the last awful album that won? ms dynamite, maybe?)
UK music?
if it is championing UK music how come Fionn Regan is nominated?
British, isn't he.
Northern Ireland.
Yes but...
If you're basing it on the fact The View are worth a nomination, you're expecting pretty much every eligible album released this year to be on that list.
BTW...
...my reaction to Mercury nominees...
http://www.drownedinsound.com/user/view/3227
....
Well apparently Fionn Regan is from Bray, which is in Wicklow, Republic of Ireland
.
na, he's from Bray, near enough Dublin i'm pretty sure.
More from the blurb:
"[We are] promoting the 12 albums of the year by British or Irish artists."
Speechless
Aaaargh! Cannot believe the presence of The View, Jamie T, Amy f**king Winehouse. How come there's no Bloc Party or, more importantly, Field Music? An album labelled the best pop album in recent years by DiS simply cannot be omitted, especially since they haven't forgotten the equally rural charms of Young Knives.
This is really disappointing.
she is english, yes.
You can regularly see her slouching around Brighton. Apparently a lazy, rude, weirdo.
what about the poalris prize?
are those nominations any better?
I know there was a greater chance of hell freezing over but
I thought 65daysofstatic were in with a chance
I also was hoping that Acoustic Ladyland would be nominated however Basquiat Strings are there so its not so bad
i wouldn't have said so...
....it looks pretty tame too.
Wot no GBQ?
Damon woz robbed.
Bats For Lashes?
Patrick Wolf? ACOUSTIC LADYLAND? You're all fucking mental.
hehe
nice to see Basquiat Strings is on there. I didn't think anyone gave a shit. Well-deserved recognition methinks.
where the hell
are bloc party and patrick wolf. this is mental. basquiat strings get my vote cause they do something a bit differnt but is still enjoyable to hear.
im checking out this fionn lad, he's pretty good.
as opposed to people who populate this board
who are generally lazy, rude, weird...oh.
no, i wasn't having a dig at you, just at using "apparently" when describing someone. means you don't know them!
Alright, Make This Your Own was poor
in comparison to everything they'd done previously.
But it still shat all over tripe like The View.
There were still more ideas bursting out of that album than probably almost anything else you'll hear all year.
i hope the view win
it'd be HILARIOUS
didnt think theyd ever come up with a list worse than 2005, but hey
It'd be hilarious if
The View get a load of daleks to "sing" Superstar Tradesman.
BAT FOR LASHES..
TO WIN...well she/they fucking well should.
Ah ha ha ha ha
The View? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, guffaw, snigger, lol etc etc.
Oh and Regan is from Bray in Ireland, but he's based in England maybe thats why he can be nominated, although personally I don't think thats a good enough reason. I bet he's chuffed though.
Klaxons would be my tip for the win.
for all those who asked about Bloc Party
the reason is, it sucked.
twilight sad...
was my thoughts too. scottish bands are often poorly represented at this award.
mainly by the likes of the view. i was dreading seeing the fratellis on the list too, but it didn't happen, much relief...
Oh please
Let it be Fionn Regan.
To be fair to the Arctics, their new album is quite good - miles better than the debut. But I don't think the critics'll be dealing out a second Mercury in a row to them.
The View... oh, you're having a laugh.
Nah
It's always been the British AND Irish music prize, as far as I can recall, so acts from both countries are eligible. Nothing to do with residence. Gemma Hayes got nominated a few years back. And I'd rather have seen her win than Ms Dynamite, but hey that's just me...
Wasn't The Young Knives' album released last year?
Or was it re-released?
If so, Fujiya & Miyagi should DEFINITELY have been nominated. The best dance record to come out of Britain in years.
As for the rest of the shortlist? Meh.
But it has been a pretty shit year for British music. Too many sub par sophomore records (Bloc Party are missing for a reason) and even more generic 'indie' bands.
NYPC
The fact that they named themselves New Young Pony Club because they thought it would look good on a t-shirt says bundles for their ethic; what are they doing in the nominations!?
Fujiya and Miyagi
would have been awesome on that shortlist. The View though...god. I dislike the Libertines as well, but if I were carl/pete and saw the View being nominated, I'd be wondering where my Mercury was...
I'd go for
Bat for Lashes, Fionn Regan or Maps to win. Otherwise they might as well rename it Smash Hits' Alternative Band Of The Year...
The new Arctic Monkeys album is...
...shit. Worst album on the list. If you are going to include a popular band that shouldn't be there, it should be Franz Ferdinand over Arctic Monkeys. At least it appears FF like they put thought and effort into it. The new AM album sounds like their last album, but less catchy.
It's really not shit, to be fair.
Just overhyped.
But so's everything these days.
