DiS + Huw = Swn: Cardiff gets a 'crawl'

Drowned in Sound is proud to announce its involvement with Huw Stephens' new Swn festival, set to take place in venues across Cardiff this November.

No acts are confirmed for Swn as-of-yet, but they are sure to be of a magnificent calibre. Says Huw:

“Swn will be a three day showcase of some of the best music from Wales and will also bring a lot of non-Welsh artists to Cardiff.

"The thrill of going from venue to venue to see different bands and DJs is unique, and Cardiff will be the perfect city to host a festival of this kind.”

What you need to know:
a) Drowned in Sound will be taking up residency at the Cardiff Barfly.
b) 'Swn' should actually be 'S?n', but some browsers don't speak Welsh so we had to use our noggins. Unfortunately, SWN is the shorthand for Southwestern Energy Company. This festival is not an energy company, but is relatively southwestern.
c) Swn is Welsh for 'noise'. No txt shrtcts 4 da Wlsh, den.

“November in Cardiff will be injected with a shot of excitement," continues Huw, "thanks to a brilliant bill of bands, diverse DJs, folk, art exhibitions and films, specially curated nights put on by well respected labels, more quality nights by local promoters who continually put on gigs all year round, and a lot of special surprises.

"You won't be disappointed!”

That's quite a pledge. Will Huw Stephens keep his word, or is he a big liar bear? Only one way to find out.

Erm

You do realise the Barfly stinks of shit and is the worst venue in the world? Apart from that, good news - I await further news with interest...

looks worth travelling to

as you were.

yes

if only my flatmates weren't into clubbing then this would be wicked. as it is i won't have anyone to go with and as such probably won't bother.

lame.

Well, Rhodri

You hadn't counted on us Londoners and our 'fresh air' machine. We'll all be fine.

loads of us on DiS

live in cardiff. you should meet up with us.

Excellent

I just hope it's industrial strength.

This

could be worthy of a trip up methinks

ooo

i assume this will be a weekend thing then (what's with the aversion to putting dates for things recently?). if so, i'll be back in the diff fer sure.

This sounds like excellent news

I look forward to attending this event definitely

Huw

is a hero

worth the trip

aye

I'll only go if

SAINT DRUM MACHINE are allowed to play.

This will be fun yes

:-)

The dates are

Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th, with some stuff on Sunday the 11th.

at last

something DiS in wales!
look forward to it as i am in cardiff uni as of this september, excellent stuff.

I really really really hope

That this event is going to be full of the same shit that I see every week around Cardiff. No offence to the bands and promoters around here but it's the same bands put on by the same people in the same venues all the time.
The No Sleep Police, are everywhere over the Internet but can I see them play anywhere? Can I bananas!!
If I wanna see DJ Scotch Egg or Gin Drinker or Sicknote I can't shit for them playing live anywhere around me.
So lets not make this event an excuse to put on your mates band or some shit. Let's make it something for new talent, up and coming bands that should be given the chance to shine.

A bloody shambles I'd call it. Gabalfa roundabout as never the seen the likes of it before and if I'm expected to get on that waterbus then I wanna see the bands I like playing, not the same old shit in the same old venues. C'mon Huw Stevens prove to us you got that job with Radio 1 cos you promote new music, not cos u knew the secret hand shake.

hi mike

nice to see you spamming somewhere else!

indeed

sometimes i despair at the bills these so called promoters put on. full of ponces that bum the life out of each other so they can be the next tour support for the lost prophets. it is infuriating.

clwb ifor bach owns barfly as well. although the gallows show in barfly a while back was insane.

:-)

Heh

you are bananas, more like.

i think there is a reason why you can't see the NSP in Cardiff - gindrinker (one word, by the way) and the others you mention are *real bands*, who actually exist and stuff.

Your band

thankfully only exist in myspace. Absolutely nobody is remotely interested in them.

Gindrinker are ace, Sicknote get off their arses and put on events, Scotch Egg is... not from Cardiff, for a start. Why are you banging on about him?

Oh my Gosh..

My bands name is called 'eggs on toast with black pepper and a bit of ketchup', and you'd be right that nobody is interested in us cos we haven't learned to play the instruments that we haven't bought yet.
I don't know why you would want to get personal as I only mentioned the fact that Cardiff is slightly inbred when it comes to music and stuff. I think the term nepitism sums it up quite aptly. Joe Riot seems to share my sentiments on the issues. I don't understand why you are so offended by what I said? You possibly couldn't be one of the mentioned bands or even a promoter around these parts? Take what I said on board, stop getting offended and making personal attacks on bands that you must seemingly be jealous of and accept a bit of constructive criticism.
And how do you know 'absolutely nobody is interested in them' Have you carried out some kind of survey, asking people "Are you interested in the No Sleep Police?"
I thought not.

Do you understand or do you need an interperator?

what, exactly, is an

interperator?

Let me know and I'll tell you whether I need one.

MC Squared

It's another term for the popular, English word interpreter.

So by the looks of your comment, you sure do.

Sharp Darts Spitting Masters
Spitting darts faster
Shut up I'm the driver, you're the passenger
I'll reign superior
The pressure blows the dial on your barometer
Do you understand?
Or do you need an interpreter?

Hmmm,

Maybe this interperator could tell me what nepitism means.

This No Sleep Police band sound interesting, maybe they should do some gigs so, y'know, people can actually hear them and stuff. And if anyone's bored of the "incestuous" music scene... try putting on some gigs yourself, with music you like and would want to see. And stop moaning about it.

mmm hmmm

Do Some gigs?

Can you ellaborate on this outlandish statement please?

Nepitism is a badly spelt version of the word nepotism. Use your imagination son.

And there's a party in my mouth.. Girls are only welcome. Great music there tho.

haha,

that's not just cardiff but probably every bloody town in the UK that has the same problem!

ady

>>>>"I really really really hope

Gindrinker

And all the other bands i mentioned are great bands, don't get me wrong. Just saying that these kinda seem to play alot round these parts..
Why aint promoters doing more to find other underground, good music and bringing it to Cardiff. The stute in Blackwood used to get all the cool shit. That was thanks to a Mr. Scott Lavendar. And Cariff is supposed to be the capital!!!!!!!

cardiff

scott lavender is now working for The Man in Porth. and his heyday at the Miners Institute has to be what, eight years ago?

good luck to huw i say. and i'd like to see NSP at the earliest possible opportunity. when are you next playing?

Good Luck Huw.

I echo that that that that (fading out)
