Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon on their Don't Look Back Daydream Nation shows

Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon spoke exclusively to DiS today about the band's forthcoming Daydream Nation shows, held as part of All Tomorrow's Parties Don't Look Back series.

The singer told DiS over the phone from New York:

"The first one is at Primavera, scarily enough. Am I looking forward to it? I guess… I feel mixed. Some of the songs we’ve been playing, actually, but the concept of playing the record from start to finish, for me, really isn’t the greatest idea. I mean, we didn’t ever do that."

Not the greatest idea? Then why agree to the shows?

"Um, the money! No... I mean, other bands break up and do reunion tours for lots of money, and we’re not actually making that much money, so that was a motivator for sure, but it wasn’t the only reason. People are excited about it, and I am curious to see how it will go. That’s the only quote you’re going to use, isn’t it? About the money…"

Like we'd do that. Read about Sonic Youth's experiences in China last month - they played in Beijing and Shanghai - at our DiS Goes East sub-site, here.

The band's Daydream Nation UK dates are as follows:

August
30 London Roundhouse
31 London Roundhouse

September
1 London Roundhouse

Tickets for the August 30 show are still available - click here for information and to buy tickets.

Fair play

to them:

1. For the honesty - not dressing it up as some great artistic big deal which obviously it aint.

2. Actually thinking that after all this time a bit of money would be good. Lets face it, with these shows they will be giving value for money so why the hell not? Seeing as you can pick up their back catalogue at a fiver a pop these days, and the advent of downloading they're not going to be making loads of dough.

My mate fancies kim gordon

fact.

She celebrated

her 54th Birthday in April this year. Possibly the coolest 54 yr old in the world?

she's the same age as my mum

wrongness

Got me Glesga tix orderd..

..event of the year for me,the only thing that could compare would be MBV gettin their heads out their arses and doin a Lovelesss tour but that aint gonna happen.Oh and Kim would still get it,damn right.

The simple truth is..

anyone that's going to these gigs is going to love them (providing they're up to scratch). I've been watching Sonic Youth for somewhere around 10 to 15 years now, and I'm looking forward to coming away from a gig and not saying "why was that so boring? why did they indulge themselves so much on their latest dull new album?"

INCINERATE!

Can't blame her aprehension

despite some genius moments Daydream Nation is far too overlong and a tad plodding.

If only it was Don't Look Back EVOL

they are also playing

in glasgow, why does noone know this?

GLASGOW HAHA

HAHA

Daydream Nation, classic?

A ridiculously overrated, bloated piece of dreck, more of the same directionless garbage SY pumped out for their entire career.

"You come running in on platform shoes with Marshall stacks to at least just give us a clue"

Does that mean anything to you? Did that even mean anything to SY when they wrote it? Teenage riot, my ass. Teenage wankery from a band that never evolved one iota from their "first thought, only thought, let's record some feedback" roots.

They've outlasted everyone. Kind of the same way toilet seats and cockroaches are supposedly to outlast WWIII.

^

so don't go to the gig

I like the album a lot and that line in the song

^^^ Clearly someone

who hasn't been paying close attention to SY's career. But if you don't like them then why would you? Try comparing 'Confusion is Sex' to 'Sonic Nurse' and I think you'll find a band that has evolved.

The lyrics to Teenage Riot I believe are a jokey commentary on what the US would be like if J Mascis was president.

Daydream Nation is a classic record. Classic enough for many other people than I to enthuse about it - The Library of Congress being one.

she's older than my mum

wow

oh hell yeah

J Mascis Prez...

None of which changes the fact that the lyrics are still shit— as they are on about 80-85% of all their songs.

Occasionally beautful, sometimes memorable, often self-indulgent and always guaranteed to have a collection of overly serious people ready to defend their every misstep as part of their bigger plan.

:D

Music is serious business!

I

wouldn't begrudge Sonic Youth for taking the opportunity to earn some money. They deserve it.

But I won't be at these gigs.

ah

they'll be so pissed off that you're not attending I'm sure...

.

I think Sonic Youth are great, I think Daydream Nation is a great album, I have no problem with them making money from me, so its all good. Roll on September. Getting to hear Kissability and Hey Joni more than justifies these shows.

Mike Diver -

you SPOKE to KIM GORDON?

*stands in total awe*
