Des'ree versus Beyonce: cover was never cleared

British soul singer Des'ree is suing American R&B star Beyoncé Knowles (pictured, possibly startled by a beaver brushing her shins) after the latter failed to clear the former's 'I'm Kissing You' hit of 1998 for a sorta-kinda cover version, 'Still In Love (Kissing You)'.
Making sense? Good. Beyoncé's version was included on the deluxe re-issue of her B'Day album. B'Day. LOL.
The suit alleges that representatives from Columbia, Beyoncé's label, tried but failed to finalise a deal for clearance on the song. The complaint was filed on Tuesday, in Manhattan Federal Court, reports Vibe.com.
Des'ree is looking for $150,000 in damages and for the distribution of the song to be, essentially, stopped. If Des'ree was American, just how much more would she be wanting right about now?

LIFE
OH LIFE
"Money don't make my world go round,
I'm reaching out to a higher ground". "Is that a philosophy?".
hahah
that makes this a B'Day suit.
is that
the lovely song from Romeo & Juliet soundtrack? I can only imagine she's suing cos trout face WARBLED THE SONG TO DEATH and made it about as subtle as an eddie murphy movie. and fair fucking play to da des'ree.
wierd
I heard this while shopping in Sainsburys this morning and thought:
a) why are they playing this song? I haven't heard this in ages
b) Crikey, the lyrics are bad
"I don't wanna see a ghost
It's the sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
Watch the evening news"
????!!!
Hope it's not a Japanese B'Day
it might catch fire underneath the buttock area...
Des'ree?
I thought she was dead.
also weird:
i spelt weird wrong. i hate people that do that.
I'm sorta offended by the last line, Mike.
We've not all greedy Americans.
....
Well, yes, I am. True.
....
....
OK, I'm over it. But let's keep the racial slurs to an absolute minimum in the future, shall we?
Just relating back to the recent...
...spate of cases with silly money being thrown around, like the Janet Jackson thing... $120m or something!?
along with
Shola Ama
and Heather Smalls
face it
the american legal system's a joke.
*ahem* as for the topic...
Kissing You's actually a great song, by far and away the best thing Des'Ree ever did (that I'm aware of, can't say I've listened to it all). Fair play for chasing up an unlicensed cover (which, I imagine, raped the song with diva-ish warbling).
Can't believe
no-one has picked up on this superb joke :-)
i personally cant believe shes asking for that little
nationality aside
When is everyone going to realise?
That racism against Americans is Good Racism as opposed to Bad Racism (like against black people), it's like the good/bad aids distinction.
At least it
makes a change from the last few times she's been skint and just decided to re-release that Life song over and over again.
the worst
lyrics i've ever heard
BDay
LOL
I absolutely love this song
but am I wrong in thinking that there was an original version of it that was pretty toss, then Nellee Hooper reworked it into the brilliant Song To The Siren-esque version on the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack?
Anyone remember
when the BBC used Desree's version as their main soundtrack tune thingy for the 2002 Euro Championships.
The bit where they showed the clip of Zidane scoring that pen against England then threw up as Des'ree sung about kissing his vomit stained lips. Beautiful.
