Jacko's broke though, isn't he? If i were a cynic i'd suggest this is just a shrewd attempt to win back the favour of the masses.

Louisiana Purchase? Maybe not such a bargain after all. Even at a measly 15 million dollars, it seems the French knew something that the US didn't. Building a city 10 feet under sea level in a hurricane zone isn't the greatest plan. OK, all kidding aside (and yeah I know that the Louisiana Purchase was a lot more land than just Louisiana), it's nice that some people are giving out the big dough to help out the Big Easy. George Clooney, George Steinbrenner, Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Oprah, Nick Cage, and Spielberg each gave a million bucks and John Grisham gave a whopping 5 million. Lots of citizens are digging deep to help out, so when I read how much money some of the biggest US companies are giving, it surprised me. Actually it didn't surprise me.

Chevron is giving 5 million. That's nice cuz I'm pretty sure John Grisham and Chevron have about the same annual income. The only real difference I can see is that Grisham didn't double the price of his books when this disaster happened. Then there's Walmart. Walmart originally pledged 8 million. Now it's up to 17 million. Walmart is the biggest company in the world. If it had it's own economy, it would rank 33rd in the world (right behind Portugal). Last year alone, it grossed 285 billion dollars. The family that owns Walmart is worth over 100 billion dollars. If my numbers are right, it's kind of like a family that has 10,000 dollars giving 170 cents to the relief effort. Thanks Walmart. Citizens: yay. Corporations: boo.

This whole thing of not donating because it's America is splitting me down the middle. On the one hand I'm like "it's America, they have enough wealth to sort their own problems out"

But then the people of New Orleans etc are just as human as the people in Asia, and nobody thought twice about donating after the tsunami

I think you all should just keep quiet. Wonder if you have done something to aid these victims in their time of need. Sure, your government was slow to respond, but now that MJ wants to do something to help the victims (which he has done all his life), you want to talk crap now. Try putting you in his shoes. Stop wining and start doing something for you people.

This just screams "PUBLICITY!!!" at me. Pretty sickening really.

Actually, you do make an interesting point. Had it been anyone else, we would probably have said 'fair enough'. It's hard to know what Michael Jackson can do now to sort out his reputation, rightly or wrongly.

But given everything that has happened, it's hard to believe his PR people haven't thought "right, this is your way back in...", do you not think? Perhaps he could have put this together amongst 'the industry' rather than getting his people to publicise the fact immediately.

To be honest, I wouldn't let Jackson near the bottom of anything.

Re Tsunami. Millions of dollars; millions...how much did Britian send? And Bush actually signed a bill to allow taxpayers to immediately take tax deductions (God I hate defending that cocksucker). So please, fuck off ed_kneaf.

You've educated me on the subject as i asked and now I am in a position to have a more valid opinion. For that I thank you, but you are still a judgemental cunt.

The point I was making about the vote was that America has to ask if thier government create the best image of americans and this is why people are not so quick to put thier hands in thier pockets. In fact we may even be making the same point but you were as quick to judge me as most are to judge Americans as a whole.

How about a little perspective hey?

Despite his flaws (proven or otherwise) MJ has always stepped in to help the needy if he could even at the peak of success in that respect he is a genuinely good and decent person there are many more that have made that kind of money that wouldn't be prepared to take the time to do what he has done.

As for America and England being "allies" I think its more like Bush and Blair are friends our only common ground is that we've had the same pricks run the country for two terms when they shouldn't have and one of us use the language and the other abuse it.

We're only Americas buddies when they need something from us - The only time we asked for their help was in WW2 and they turned us down flat until Pearl Harbour got bombed then all of a sudden we're allies.

I'm not willing to help a country that doesn't help itself. That normally wouldn't be true, but we're not talking about Zimbabwe or something. We're talking about the US, which has the resources and capability to help others. This should include their own citizens.

I'm not saying that NO doesn't need help. It does. However, the government in the best situation to do it --- the country that always preaches high morals, freedom, and democracy but never seems to deliver it --- should be doing more.

It seems silly to be even helping a country thats so rich and powerful. Even Castro recently saved 1 million people from a large "disaster" in Cuba and not a single person was killed because of it. He has less resources, but more will.

Generally America is the first to say how they feel for the people suffering but the last to roll up their sleeves and do something about it. You just notice it more when it happens in their own country because saying they feel for the people just doesn't cut it we're talking about a world super power that couldn't be bothered to help its own countrymen. It's no surprise it turned to anarchy with the government not doing anything, they soon found troops to point gunsa and "restore order". As per usual America choose to sort out problems with guns rather than aid

Selfish materialism ? He has always given rather selflessly . I'm so sick of people thinking that because someone's a millionaire they owe the money to every charitable cause. Charity is a choice if it wasn't a choice it'd be called helping tax. I'd bet all the money MJ made that if you had the money he did you would have given a hell of a lot less to charity.

In regards to his ego Michael Jackson could parachute ANYWHERE in the world and not only would he be recognised by anyone they could name at least five songs he's written/performed.

Since a child Michael Jackson has worked for what he has earned and has an undisputable talent He owes the people of New Orleans nothing but he offers help and you call him selfish.
