Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back catalogue

Punk indie Lookout!, based in California, is facing up to the possibility of closure following Green Day's decision to pull their back catalogue from the label.
The band's decision comes after a number of contractual disputes regarding unpaid royalties. Lookout! released much of Green Day's pre-Warner material - Kerplunk for example - and had been making decent money on continued sales.
Although no official word has come from the label, there are reports that it has let six of its nine staff go and that all upcoming releases have been shelved for now. Green Day are looking for another label to take on their old records.

Capitalist bastards.
Re: Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back catalogue
Hmmmm, there must be a proper reason why this decision has been made - its not like they need the money. Meditate on this I will.
Re: Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back catalogue
I'm with the man above me... I can't imagine them doing this without a good reason. Would be nice to know what that was...

The message on lookoutrecords.com is very complimentary of Green Day and doesn't say anything about the label having to close. I hope it doesn't because they've released many great records by MTX, Op Ivy etc over the years.
Screeching Weasel recently moved their back catalogue somewhere else too. Not sure if that was down to unpaid royalties or not.
With bands such as the aformentioned Op Ivy and MTX as well as old Donnas records etc I don't see how Green Day pulling their two cds could have screwed them over to the point of closure. But we shall see.

If they aren't paying Royalties to Greenday they are very within their rights to challenge them and take their recordings elsewhere i think.

Re: Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back catalogue
They weren't paying royalties to Avail or Screeching Weasel either who also pulled their records.
So clearly they just can't manage a business very well.
Pity because they've released some really good records!

Green Day are the least punk band ever to make "punk" music.

Complimentary to Green Day? S'pose that's 'cause it isn't run by Larry "I'm A Bitter Reactionary Wanker" Livermore anymore. The singer (ex-singer) of The Pattern has owned it for a few years now. If ever there was a man who believed he was the authority on punk rock and who was punk, Livermore was it. The moment Green Day left Lookout!, he began to bad mouth them saying "OMG THEY WERE NEVER PUNK! I HATE THEM", as did many people who were part of that scene.
'Cause, y'know, punk rock's all about becoming stale, conformed and not progressing.
And brusma - I think there are several thousand candidates for what you've just said that would rate as "less punk" on your scale. I'm pretty sure Good Charlotte never toured for three or four years, sleeping on strangers' floors and releasing 7"s on a respected independent to get themselves the attention warranted for a major label deal.

Here's what Larry said about the whole thing:
"The problem has been going on for a long time, and Green Day has been more than patient. It's about money, and also about bad faith. Lookout! has been failing to pay Green Day (and other bands) for years now, and apparently using the money instead to put out a series of terrible records that very few people wanted to buy. Gambling on new bands is part of what a record label does, but you don't do it with other people's money."
And before you can scream "greedy major label bastards," Livermore also defended the multi-platinum artists, saying: "Green Day could have taken their records away several years ago when Lookout! first breached their contract, but they were generous enough to allow Lookout! to keep licensing the records in hopes that the label would get back on its feet. No matter how rich a band is, they shouldn't be expected to subsidize a failing label forever, especially when that label isn't doing anything particularly worthwhile."

Being more punk than Good Charlotte is nothing to be proud of. My grandmother is more punk than Good Charlotte.

DiS yet again stealing news from other websites, i see
Re: Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back
that is a pretty dumb thing to say!!!
Re: Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back
Billie Joe, Neil Hamilton and AN Other obviously had a good reason. They need the money, after all.

Yes, Green Day have plenty of money already, but it's wrong to imply that they 'should' stay with Lookout! despite the fact that they aren't keeping up their side of the deal just because it's a label that's released some good records over the years. If they did, well that would be very nice of them and all, but I don't think it's something that should be expected of them.
Lookout! in trouble after Green Day pull back catalogue
well if they sign up with a decent indie label - all's well that ends well

its not like they need the money - does bono need to sue that woman because she robbed his hat? No, but he does, because he's a prick.

Bono is definitely a prick.

It's the principle of the thing - if someone robs your hat, you should have them surely? Otherwise it will send a message that you can get away with stealing the hats of the rich, and then chaos will follow. Seriously though?
Thumbs up to above
and don't forget riding around in a bookmobile and playing gigs at houses without a roof that had to be broken into.
