Booze banned at Live 8

The sale of alcohol is banned at this Saturday's Live 8 event in Hyde Park.

A spokesman told London's 'Evening Standard' paper: "Nothing alcoholic will be sold and, according to terms and conditions, people aren't going to be able to bring anything in with them."

The ban is said to be because of the sheer size of the concert. Only bands and 'VIP' guests will have access to bars.

The O2 Wireless festival on the same site has a margarita bar, champagne and Pimm's area and real-ale and Smirnoff.

In other good Live 8 Hyde Park news, Muse, The Cure and The Killers have all reportedly pulled out to be replaced by UB40. So that's alright then.

The concerts will take place across the world and all be televised and stuff.

UK – Hyde Park, London
Edinburgh - Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push
France – Palais de Versailles, Paris
Germany – Siegessäule, Berlin
Italy – Circus Maximus, Rome
USA –Museum of Art, Philadelphia
Canada –Park Place, Barrie
Japan –Makuhari Messe, Tokyo
South Africa –Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg
The Russian Federation - Red Square, Moscow

And why is it happening again? Here's a reminder from Gandolf himself:

"This is not Live Aid 2.
These concerts are the start point for The Long Walk To Justice, the one way we can all make our voices heard in unison.
This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the 8 world leaders at G8 an end to poverty.
The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough.
By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."

Booze banned at Live 8

Jesus this story is made up surely - I look froward with glee to to aftermath of this ugly carbuncle of a 'concert'

Booze banned at Live 8

without the healing power of alcohol to calm their sorrows, Don't be surprised when every sane person in the park kills themself over the sight of u2 dressed up as sergent pepper. uurgh

well

we'll just all have to find some mushrooms instead innit

Booze banned at Live 8

or just the site of u2, the least charismatic band since REM, or maybe even ever - it makes you long for Simple Minds sometimes

I remember as a nipper being clinically depressed watching the original - though I recall Adam Ant cheered me up - do you think he will make an apprearence?

Booze banned at Live 8

going to the berlin leg... We get Brian Wilson ... and Audioslave (that hurts...)
But most of all, they'll never be able to forbid the sale of beer! hooray for Berlin...

Booze banned at Live 8

Don't mention sodding U2 - I had their 'music' blaring over my airspace for 3 hours last night. They were playing in the Millennium Stadium opposite my house. I will smite thee, Bono!

Booze banned at Live 8

wow. a load of stuff just appeared by magic.

Booze banned at Live 8

its at this point we should start saying libellous things about Bono Vox and Andrea Corr

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Doesn't Berlin also get a reunited A-ha? That's worth going to just for Take on Me, one of the best pop songs liek evah, thrown in with a bit of Cry Wolf & the Sun always Shines on TV.

Booze banned at Live 8

No booze?!?!? How is that going to help solve poverty?! For fucks sake. Six hours, one park, eighty-five terrible acts and no beer. I give up, I really do.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Now now Prole, don't get arsey!

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Bono will probably give communion to the masses. Free wine there.

Booze banned at Live 8

Gandolf?

hhahahahha

Booze banned at Live 8

I know its a bit late in the day but why is the English line up so bland.............ah, silly me- as long as Bono dresses like a baby stag like he did in 1985 - and if he brings somebody up from the audience this time I hope they take a swing for him before grabbing the mic to sing an off-key verson of 'Kill The Poor' as Chris Martin tries to vainly wrestle him to the ground with his puny frame.

Now that would be newsworthy on the day

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

I might've been me. Google image search is ace.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

The way this is going, Blair and Brown will turn up with guitars. After all, they are the 'Lennon and McCartney of global development' according to Bono.

My ex-girlfriend is working in the ViP bar at Live 8. Maybe she could sneak some booze out to you, Bamos!

Booze banned at Live 8

I'm sure they'll sell bottled water at ridiculous prices instead.

Booze banned at Live 8

Hope it does well and all that but this is sounding like a really shit concert, especially if it's true that Muse and The Cure have pulled out.

Booze banned at Live 8

the cure were the best bit on the bill.....rubbish!!!! Alas, as per usual, i shall drink myself stupid on saturday night and miss the whole damn shabang anywho

Booze banned at Live 8

Ok.

So let's face it - the bands involved aren't the most cutting edge or musically interesting (to say the least) and there will be no beer.

You can argue all day and all night as to why the bands have agreed to play - be it in their own self-promotion interests or that they really care.

YOu can also argue over whether these concerts will make a blind bit of difference to people living in Africa.

And while these are all important discussions that need to take place, people have to be hard-hearted cynics to criticise these events so heavily when ultimately, they will raise awareness and highlight the issues at hand.

It makes me pretty sad that people can be so negative in the face of something that is basically attempting to get help to people, so I for one and giving Bob Geldof absolute praise for actually taking action. I just wish others could put aside their negativity for once.

Booze banned at Live 8

I hate Live 8.
I hate the bannage of booze.
I hate the lineup.
I hate Bono on the weekends.
I hate good bands pulling out of bad lineups.
I hate mindless rants about hating things.
But Velvet Revolver....They aren't bad.

Booze banned at Live 8

they should have told people it was a booze free event in the first place. Then there wouldn't have been any perceived problem with people selling tickets on ebay.

I would have required a fee of £100 to go to live 8, that fee has no quadrupled in the light of this new, beer free knowledge

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Get her on the case! I'm not going to survive otherwise!

Booze banned at Live 8

muse, the cure AND the killers? seems like every vaguely-hip indie band is pulling out. We can only wonder why

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

According to the Live 8 website, the Cure are playing the Paris show...

Booze banned at Live 8

If I've got to sit/stand through the fucker, I'm not gonna do it sober!

If anyone can find me, I'll have booze! :)

Booze banned at Live 8

Good principle, dodgy concert. Muse were the one reason I nearly applied for tickets... glad I didn't now.

Booze banned at Live 8

UB40 are still alive?!
bloody 'eck

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

I'll be looking out for you then. Me and Mrs Bamos will expect booze.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

me and mrs sadpunk will have booze!

we're watching it on some big telly or something.. if you can find me, you get booze! :)

Booze banned at Live 8

If you do feel like watching the Live 8, AND drinking beer, you can do so at the Marquee Club. We're showing the event on a big screen on level five...where's there's a bar, hurrah!...and serving burgers n pizzas (free beer for evening gig with every burger or pizza bought). You may think this is blatant band wagon jumping for profit....but oh no, as we're raising money for OXFAM. Entry FREE with DONATION - www.plummusic.com

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Bands in the evening are MY OCTOPUS GEORGE + NEAT PEOPLE (bloody marvelous band) + ORIATION + THE DAVE BROWNS

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Right. I'll be the guy with a girl. Simple. See you there!

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Cool. You wont be able to miss me, I'll be the guy with a girl!

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

hey, SEAN added that!

sean, did you add that bit to make me look funny?

Booze banned at Live 8

i could go on all day about how terrible the line up of these concerts is, how much i hate U2, and argue about the supposed pointlessness of it all.

but bob geldoff is a Hero, pure and simple. if he didn't do it, i know i wouldn't.

Booze banned at Live 8

I thought UB40 changed their name to the Dead 60's?

Booze banned at Live 8

Don't you just wish all these huge bands would cut Africa a cheque so we wouldn't have to endure Live 8 or Geldof's terrible Tv programmes?

P.S. Please don't write an essay about how much money Africa owes because this is something called a joke, thanks bye.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Ah. There's nothing I like better than a good bit of smiting.

Booze banned at Live 8

HA, that'll teach all those 20 something moronic Radio One listeners, HA.

At least for ONE DAY, the ruting will stop, Halleluyah!

Booze banned at Live 8

haha.

moan whinge complain.

xMx

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

yeah we do, quite looking forward to it even though I only want to here Take on ME. We also get Crosby stills and NAsh, which could be OK and Lauryn hill who should be entertaining. Plus lots of german band but there's some decent ones, really want to see die Toten Hoses, they're such legends here...

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Die Toten Hosen that is

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

When I went to the Brandenburg Gate for New Year's Eve, there was a band called Die Grotto playing on the stage....they were doing Van Halen covers!!!

I've heard of Die Toten Hosen...what sort of music is it & what does it mean? 'The ____ Trousers?'!!!

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

"The dead trousers", they're the biggest punk rock band in germany, been around since the begining of the 80s. With time it became more rock than punk rock I guess, still pretty punk though (I don't know them that much actually, I have 2 CDs which are fairly good. Really want to see the crowd and the massive german punk rock singalongs!)

Booze banned at Live 8

What? I was looking forward to watching Muse completely own every other band on the bill, turn off the television and ignore any mentgion of the concert.

U2 probably spend enough to feed about 1,000 African families for a year in that private jet they fly in to get the the gig. Bono's such a hypocritical bastard.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

now that we are all paying for Bob and his chums to get together (via Gordon Brown waiving VAT), how about all the bands donate the royalties for the, no doubt, bucketloads of cds they are going to sell next week on the back of this?

Bob Geldof is really pissing me off just now: telling everyone to go to Edinburgh and no doubt cause chaos (er, Gleneagles is about 60 miles away), then swamp eBay (a legitimate business) just because they provide a service that, in this isolated case, allows blatant profiteering. Get back in your fucking box. I appreciate the contribution of the original Band Aid, but that was 20 years ago for christ's sake.

I will be avoiding the shows at all costs (might be quite an achievement) - can't risk being exposed to Coldplay's "cat, mat, bat, hat" style lyrics again.

Booze banned at Live 8

Amen, once he paid £1000 to have his faviourite hat transported to a consert...I mean, what?

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Also the upkeep of Bono's sunglasses and wigs must cost a pretty penny

Booze banned at Live 8

Apparently they’re banning booze at Glastonbury in 2007.

Can I just add a boast cum contrast to this pathetic story. I just got back from Glasto having seen the White Stripes, pissed and nicely shrooming. It was FUCKING awesome.

No booze. Cunts.

Booze banned at Live 8

Hmmm - White Stripes good at Glasto?
Could have fooled me - I saw a dreary set which seemed to go on for hours packed with useless drumming, tiresome yelping and increasingly self indulgent guitar....Didn't White Stripes used to be good once?
One trick ponies reach the end of the
line....

Don't know about Muse but I caught R Smith on BBC news this morning soundchecking at Hyde Park - so unless they've pulled out yesterday, I would think we get at least one band worth watching.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

Exactly. The elitist, negative, derogatory nature of this website strikes again.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

this is the hyde park line-up as of now:

* African Children's Choir
* Annie Lennox
* Bob Geldof
* Coldplay
* Dido
* Elton John
* Joss Stone
* Keane
* Killers, The
* Madonna
* Mariah Carey
* Ms. Dynamite
* Paul McCartney
* Pink Floyd
* Razorlight
* REM
* Robbie Williams
* Scissor Sisters
* Snoop Dogg
* Snow Patrol
* Stereophonics
* Sting
* Travis
* U2
* UB40
* Velvet Revolver

so it looks like the killers ARE doing it and i was misinformed (huff). but no cure. them and muse moved to paris show.

Booze banned at Live 8

Apparently this is the score on the Cure:

Live 8 - The Cure will play the Palais de Versailles in France on July 2nd, 2005 as part of Live 8.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

some of the times for Versailles:

Starts around 4pm
Muse 5:30 - 5:50 pm
Shakira 7:25 - 7:45 pm
Placebo 9:50 - 10:10 pm
The Cure 10:35 - 10:55pm (but hints that they might break the curfew)

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

isn't the "gandolf" comment a reference to the joss stone interview before band aid ? someone asked her what she thought about bob geldof and she replied "i thought he was great in the lord of the rings....." or something equally ignorant and befitting of the little dorothy.

and those of you moaning about having to endure and sit through this thing.....you dont have to. your tickets cost a whopping £1.50 if you got them. if you dont like the line up then give the tickets away. the rest of you dont actually have to watch it on the box.

miserable punks.

Booze banned at Live 8

How is this concert supposed to give a strong message to G8 countries about ending poverty?

People are there for the music. If the entire 6 hours was just a protest rally, nobody would go even if it was free.

Booze banned at Live 8

good. grief. this is going to be utter, utter shit (about from maybe velvet revolver)... and how many people attending or going on that march actually know what they're doing it for anyway?
as for the lack of booze, that's criminal... i mean you'd need a large one just to suffer Dido.

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

“we'll just all have to find some mushrooms instead innit”
“wow. a load of stuff just appeared by magic.”

Found them then?

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

seen the White Stripes, pissed and nicely shrooming

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

glad someone noticed :)

Booze banned at Live 8

has no-one else picked up on the VIP bar angle? so, while the stone-cold-sober masses are being lectured ... umm... having their awareness of global poverty raised, sorry ... by a stack of millionaires, at the same time having their pockets systematically emptied by concessions stands charging 8 quid for cold chips and bottled water, a nice clean cosy enclave of celebs and suits quaff Moet, compare wives, penis length and investment portfolios and frot each other stupid on bolivian boogie flour. is it just me who finds that teeth-grindingly hypocritical? is it??

Re: Booze banned at Live 8

yep, totally agree. Watched about 5 minutes of Jonathan Ross trying to squeeze himself up various band's backsides before turning off in disgust. Only switched tv on to tape the whole, giant marketing excercise for my sister.

Have we all lost such respect for our politicians that we think they will be influenced by a group of middle aged, washed up musicians? Bob Geldof is hardly a shining example of sucess in his chosen field is he? I did snigger at Ms Dynamite saying she was doing it to help "those less unfortunate than herself!" (ITV news last night).

Apparently the policing in Edinburgh will cost £50m. No one seems to be bothered about all the energy used to transport the audiences and protesters (700 coaches to Edinburgh alone). The group that cycled to Edinburgh from as far as London deserve some respect.

Booze banned at Live 8

I thought it was awesome. Maybe I'm too light-hearted.

Booze banned at Live 8

Let's not forget that the whole point of Live 8 was to raise awareness of what's going on in some of the poorest areas in the world.
Your common or garden DiS user might just be clued up enough about what's going on, but a hell of a lot of people might not have the time/interest to actively seek out info about poverty in africa; this is why Live 8 is important. It's easy enough to be cynical about things like Live 8 but at the end of the day, if even a small fraction of the people attending the concerts came away with more knowledge about the situation and the drive to do something about it, then it can only be a good thing.

Booze banned at Live 8

totally agree with u :-)
