Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

The post-Syd Barrett Pink Floyd line up of Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright are to reform for this year’s Live 8 concert.

The news is somewhat surprising given that Waters and Gilmour still hold onto one of rock's most notorious and long-standing feuds.

The pair have not appeared on stage together since touring The Wall album in the early eighties.

It follows persistent rumours for the past year that the band were about to reform to mark the 30th anniversary of their ‘Wish You Were Here’ album.

The deadline for ticket applications for Live 8 is tonight (Sunday 12th June).

is this true ?

seriously ?

wow

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Seconded. Holy poop. I didn't see that ever happening.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

how the hell can they decide that so late on

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Wow........look at what a charity performance has done ---- both the Spice Girls AND Pink Floyd has re-formed. Sweet!

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Awesome!

Perhaps Waters and Gilmour have finally made up. Or perhaps they'll be separated on stage by a forty feet tall screen so they can't see each other at any point.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Spice Girls (thankfully) isn't happening.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

I'd be even more impressed if Tony Blair's former band Ugly Rumours reformed for Live 8.

With Mo Mowlam on drums.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

And Frankie Poullain on bass.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Good! About fucking time too. Hopefully this will mean a whole band re-think and a return to class versions of Insterstellar, Saucerful of Secrets, Set the Controls et al without the usual turgid snore-a-thons of the Wall and other 30 bpm borearama hits! Put the risers up the current dullards on display!

And I heard a rumour in 2002 that Syd was going to return - also I thought that Sly Stone was on his way back too. If Brian (yay!) Wilson and Arthur (zzz) Lee can do it...well...

"The news is somewhat surprising given that Waters and Gilmour still hold onto one of rock's most notorious and long-standing feuds."

Err. The interviews I've read with both of them suggest they don't have much to argue about these days. Gilmour asked Waters to join them on the Pulse tour as they were doing the whole of Dark Side of the Moon, and I believe Waters only refused because he didn't feel it would be right, not because he hated Gilmour.

Pink floyd = yawn

What's with all the boring and slightly rubbishy white rock bands at live 8? It's a little bit elitist, some variety would be good. There's a distinct lack of hip-hop/urban in the line-up, or anything else for that matter.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Bottom line: They've sold the most albums and (in all likelihood) their fanbase now have oodles of spare cash to give away when out at concerts like these to salve their upper-middle-class guilt complexes?

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Heh... you're probably right there.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Political machinations and motivations are all very well/ill - and quite right to be speculated upon... but these gigs are happening, for better or worse. There will be many a dullard that decries the news that this lot are reforming but, check yourself... (another ellipsis) ... if a band you like - insert name - were getting it on again after an extended hiatus, would you not be a wee bit chuffed? Never mind the 'pious' sentiments or otherwise, say this group, the whoever, were doing it again up the road from you, you wouldn't want to attend? I guess that's why the Pixies, Dinosaur, LA's, etc., have experienced such poor ticket sales since their regrouping. Laters x

PS Eternal question: band or group name - third person, singular or plural?

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

I always reckon a band name is plural but grammatically it's 'Blur is' not 'Blur are', so far as I can tell.

Whether 'The Pink Floyd' should be treated differently to 'Pink Floyd' is another matter.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

do you think they'll stick to pre-Roger-leaving songs, or do you think Roger's rehearsing how to play 'Lost For Words' off The Division Bell right now? They could harmonise on the 'and they tell me to please go and fuck myself' line...

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

the pixies have experienced poor ticket sales since their regrouping?

thats news to me

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Wow. Best news I've heard all week.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

It's the best news you have heard all week? It is only monday morning!

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

they'll only get to do three songs (well that's how many coldplay are doing and they're on 2nd-last), which is pretty ghey but i'm sure they could stretch that for a good 45 minutes. ;)

'echoes', anyone? wikkid.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

i'm sure that'd be news to the pixies aswell. poor ticket sales my arse!

some people do talk some crap.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

so let's see....
echoes
shine on you crazy diamond
comfortably numb (with 14 minute guitar solo)

that's definitely over an hour!

oops.... showing my age...

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

I wonder if Eavis is kicking himself that Basement Jaxx are booked instead of a PF warmup slot :-/

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

hahaaha - and your a Radiohead fan are you???

Blimey

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Wouldn't that mean 'Pink Floyd is shite' though?
After all these years of saying 'Pink Floyd are shite', I'm not sure if I can change...

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

hooray for plink! (cleverly, she merges pink and floyd to create a shorter, catchy name for the nice band people)

i agree, echoes, shine on you crazy diamond, and the other one (sorry, can't remember what you said)

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

does anyone know appearence order yet for the London show? Also, if it's a 16-hour event, when does it start and finish? I'd have thought they'd give PF at least 30 mins before the obligatory all-artists-onstage-holding-arms-aloft-singalong finale of ...

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

how on earth can a radiohead fan say pink floyd are boring?

that's a bit like saying egg & bacon flan is boring but i love quiche lorraine!

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Greenday there as well: nyihurgh (sideshowbob noise after standing on a rake)
Saw this on the telly the other night. made me laugh.
'whenever you see people like geldof and elton john and bono on the tv telling you that all this village needs is 2000 quid to make a school etc, dont you just think, well bloody give them the money then!'

Pink Floyd Rock. probably not as much anymore, but still. Wish they wouldnt endorse such hypocritical crap like Live Aid.... *ahem, says the guy playing a local make poverty history gig*
i do kinda agree with the sentiments of Daman Albarn and Zac De La Rocha on the greater scheme of events tho.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Oh dear.

Kill yourself please.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

Well anyone who'd actually listened to both bands would realise they're actually quite different.

Obviously if the Floyd were going to do a Syd-era set then it wouldn't be 'yawn'.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

i've listened to both bands... a lot!

i have also seen both bands live (saw pink floyd live in one of their later carnations as a kid). have to say, ever since ok computer radiohead really do remind me of pink floyd.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

what has Zack said then?
is it online anywhere?

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

"What's with all the boring and slightly rubbishy white rock bands at live 8? It's a little bit elitist, some variety would be good. There's a distinct lack of hip-hop/urban in the line-up, or anything else for that matter."

When else are you going to see Pink Floyd, U2, REM and god knows how many other legendary groups/artists on the same day? Hip hop/urban's not there because most of it frankly is shite. I mean come on, the Floyd or Jamelia?

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8

My mate looks like Roger Waters!

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

and him out of Kings Of Leon looks like a young Dave Gilmour now that he's shaved that beard off.

Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live 8
