Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

Across London and the rest of the world, Make Poverty History launches its new 'Click' ad campaign today geared at recruiting more support for the group's cause. The ad features many big-name celebrities, such as Brad Pitt, Bono, P. Diddy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Cameron Diaz, Kylie, among others. Viewers will watch as these entertainment icons each snap their fingers every three seconds, each click symbolizing another child who has become the victim of extreme poverty.

As a result of the campaign launch, many German, Canadian, and other G8 coalitions are developing their own versions of the 'Click' ad in an effort to encourage more public support, as well as to lobby other G8 governments to 'drop the debt, make trade just and give more and better aid to developing countries.'

The 'Click' ad will soon appear in cinemas, at concerts, and on the radio. To watch the ad online, visit here.

Why don't all these rich famous folks in the ad just donate a wedge of their whopping bank balances to the cause? Surely a bit of wealth distribution from those at the top to those at the bottom could HELP make poverty history, if not complete the task in one fell swoop.

Not that I'm saying you shouldn't support MPH, because of course you should. It just seems a bit hypocritical, that's all. Or ironic. Or whatever word it is I'm looking for.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

I've often wondered this, but didn't know whether I was being naive or whatever. Why don't rich peoplke just give some of their money to poor people? I mean, I know it's not as simple as all that, but still.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

A lot of them do, though. Bill Gates is the world's biggest philanthropist.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

Is that a joke? And if it isn't, how do you explain Windows?

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

I don't think this campaign is about donating money as such though - at least not in the comic relief kinda way. This campaign is for action, it doesn't want to raise money it wants to actually DO something, this being dependant on the agreement of the G8. Collecting money won't persuade those governements to bring about change, but voicing the desire of the public to get poverty sorted will. And I think thats what this campaign is about.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

thats exactly what Bono sets out to do, try and make people take notice, he is a rich rock star, but he does do a lot more than most, no-one knows just how much money he gives to charity do they? i think it's probably a lot more than people think.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

All I know is that I met him in a pub in Dublin in 1984 and asked him for some change for the phone and he told me to fuck off. So bollocks to him.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

He's a big dickhead who only does this kind of thing for his band. Publicity stunt. Who does he think he is? He's an asshole.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

But he does so much more than some celebrities do, surely we shouldn't be slating the ones that do stuff? even if it isn't much at least he draws attantion to the situation

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

He does do quite alot, but i've just spent the past few hours having an argument with some irish people about his greatness, so now i fucking hate him, and also why don't they just donate some of money they are making touring? because at tickets going for between 80+150 euros they must make shit loads.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

Sorry,

But I have to disagree with your comments about Bono (in the time i took to write that people have died - because we don't care enought about others in the world) The advert is not about the stars but would anyone pay attention if it was a video of me and you. Something incrdible is happening this year in Edinburgh - thousands of ordinary people not stars are going to try to persuade eight of the most powerful men in the world that we do care and make a difference, i'm grateful for all the celebrities who endorse MPH - I don't care if they are being hypocritical - as long as it persuades more people - young old rich poor to take up the challenge of MPH - log on to the website watch the videos of little children - they may not even be alive now - do you think they care that half the world thinks Bono's a prat and the other think he way up there.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

but he does donate money! he just doesn't make a huge deal out of it. don't get me wrong i think he's a bit of a cock, i just think that he does a lot more than other people in his position do.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

sure
some people look up to him
its a good cause
etc.

but just the way he does it makes me dislike him even more.

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campa

He's a pop star, who i think makes great records. If you see him live - he totally looks as if he thinks he's the most important person in the world, surely it's better that someone uses their talents and influences in the world for good rather than a bad influence on the young. We (mostly) all idolise people whether it be sport stars actors actresses pop stars - they are all probably obnoxious in some way but hey so are we all. Most of us will never have our foibles displayed for all the world to see. Back to my first point he's a pop star, so what! he can sing - so what! - thankfully he is using his influence to do good - there are lots of examples of pop stars who don't deserve the time of day of anyone - yet our papers tv magazines are full of crap about who they are going out with, who they go drunk with who they took drugs with, a celebrity is just out of prison, there but for the grace of god go I, he's appealing for people to buy his records. We shouldn't even give him a milimetre of publicity. Sorry ranting now!

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

start slating the celebrities that do nothing for charity whatsoever like britney spears and co. Its pretty clear that bono is trying to make a difference, whether for u2's benefit or not we'll never know but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...

Re: Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

Ok i will say he is a good dude, but can i still hate him for being irish?!

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

I'm very interested in why it even matters why he's doing it. I personally couldn't give a damn about his motives (and why people seem to think it's fine to have a go at him whilst so many don't do anything.) It helps, all the celebrity endorsement has gained so much exposure for this whole campaign and... people are donating, you see wristbands around, you hear about it a lot. I think that making it into such a big thing, actually trying to get other people as well is better than just donating some of your own money (which I'm sure he's done as well.)
If the money helps the cause, then why care if he's doing it for publicity? It's a moot point.

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

As much as he'd like to think so, Bono is not Jesus.

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

i heard they are gonna do a sexual disaese one with he clicks replaced with 'claps'

Make Poverty History launches 'Click' ad campaign

All you people complaining about celebrity endorsements of things like this are missing the point. I'd do this ad in a minute but no fucker would take any notice. If the ad makes even a handful of celebrity-obsessed airheads start to think about other people and take some action (even if it's just visiting the MPH site) then this advert is worth doing.

Whether the celebrities give money or not (and how the fuck do you all know that they don't anyway?) they are helping raise the profile of this campaign. I suggest all the whiners go and actually watch the video. I've been trying to raise awareness about MPH and similar causes for long enough (see a load of my other DiS posts for starters) and am fully aware of the number of people who die every year due to poverty and inequality, in part due to our governments taking money from their countries to repay loans that we only gave them to buy stupid things like weapons from our us, to support our industries, in the first place, and the ad still brought a tear to my eyes.

When you give half of your own income to MPH or similar charities you can start bitching about famous people not doing so. Meanwhile, at least go watch the ad and sign up to MPH.

Make Poverty History clubnight

Hey
Can anyone give me a hand (presuming people haven't fucked off yet through shear boredom at the above Bono conversation)? I'm a student at Edinburgh and am on the committee for People and Planet, a nationwide non-aligned student grassroots-action network. P&P are doing a lot of the organising for the G8, liasing with groups like Dissent and Make Poverty History. MPH have asked us to sort out a clubnight in Edinburgh for 2nd July, following a huge march and conference (yeah, Bono will probably be there... at the conference that is. He can fuck off in the evening). The venue's gonna be about 600 capacity (Bongo Club probably) and I'm wracking my brains for bands/artists to play. At the moment I'm thinking of Asian Dub Foundation (as they're receptive to this sort of thing and quite relevant), Mylo (cos he's local and would work well later on), a couple of London Hip Hop acts (Carpetface, GM Babies), and I was thinking of approaching various scottish bands (eg: Sons and Daughters). Of course July is a busy time of year for bands so I'm gonna have to compile quite a list of people to approach about this and then if I'm lucky, a few of them will be free and up for it.

I've organised charity gigs in the past, but nothing quite of this scale so it's gonna be interesting as I seem to have been thrown in the deep end here (but remain most qualified to head the task out of P&P).

What I'm asking for here is ideas. If you've just read this and thought "hey, he should get ....... to play, then please make a suggestion. If you know how to get hold of booking agents for any of the people I mentioned, or for any other people you think would be good, let me know. It'd be really useful.

Anyway cheers for listening.

Andrew
