But don't Magnolia still play Songs:Ohia ummm songs?

*Shrugs*

They are more of a rock band. I prefer to have the songs relatively stripped down.

He's playing in Paris too ! Yeah !

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

I haven't picked it up yet, but the recent limited release live album "Trials & Errors", has at least 2 S:O songs on it. But with the newy out in April, it could be anybody's guess whether he still includes the odd few in the set.

magnolia electric co. is songs:ohia.

Molina changed the name in 2003 with the release of...'Magnolia Electric Co.'

No it is a new band. Songs:ohia is retired/on a break.

Songs: Ohia was pretty much a solo project with collaborators on each album, whereas MEC is a fully fledged band with permanent members, although Molina still writes all the songs. The last Songs: Ohia album "Magnolia Electric Co" was a transitionary album to link the two projects together, so they aren't entirely seperate entities. Then there was his solo album Pyramid Electric Co released under his own name which is stylistically closer to Songs: Ohia material.

Live, he still plays some Songs: Ohia material as heard on the Trials and Errors live album, but generally he tends to play newer material at live shows rather than reverting back to older songs. It's doubtful we'll be hearing Captain Badass live again.

Either way, i'm wetting myself with excitement about these shows.

Me too!!! I've been pestering the folks at Secretly Canadian for years to have them include the UK. I've bought for London, and Bush Hall is such an intimate little place too.

It's about time, although i've only been a fan a couple of years. I'll be at the Bush Hall gig, intimate sounds good, i've not been there before. I'll be at the Brighton one too. *obsessed*

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

Where can I get tickets for the London gig? The sites I normally use only have Nottingham.

Also, of the early Songs:Ohia albums, which is the best to get?

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

I was just about to post the link to Ticketweb for you, where i bought my London tix on Saturday, but i find that they have sold out there. Ebay perhaps?

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

Woohoo! Ticketweb just added some more tickets so I got me one. Reet excited.

My big fave is The lioness. It's basically just Molina and the two Arab Strap guys and was recorded in Scotland. It's about desperate love that just falls apart with such a fragility, and i totally adore it! I have all kinds of live stuff and singles containing awsome songs like "How to be perfect men" or "Naopleon". His S:O stuff seems to be characterised by his shaky relationships with women, with the move into MEco dealing more with decaying industrial Mid-West communities. He captures an incredible feeling for loss and desolation, and the album "Didn't it rain" is so brilliantly filmic when you close your eyes.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

Many thanks. Just downloaded the stuff off epitonic.com. I've only got the Magnolia Electric Co album (the one by Songs: Ohia, not the new band!!) which is brilliant, but I think I'll be investing soon.

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

There's a couple of mp3s from the live Trials and Errors album on secretlycanadian.com if you're interested. Oh, and a nice video too.

Re: Jason Molina brings Magnolia Electric Co. to UK

my pc must be shite cos i tried to d/l those 2 tracks but i was told they were invalid. That Video track is from the Lioness, oh yes!!!

Hey y'all,
This is Jason Groth from Magnolia Electric Co. (guitar player). Let me clear some things up. The entire band that is now called MECO was Songs: Ohia before it changed it's name. Jason Molina has always, for the most part, just played new songs at shows. The live record was recorded as Songs: Ohia in Brussels in 2003 when we were all fresh in the band. Songs: Ohia does not exist anymore, but the music would have been the same, new band or not. Molina's just moving in the direction he had been moving since Didn't it Rain. Like you all have said, the real difference is that he is treating it more like a band now, as in we are the same members who have been in the band for two years. But just to set the record straight -- we have never played anything older than stuff from Didn't it Rain, and Jason writes so many songs that we have to play new stuff at shows just to keep up. Looking forward to meeting you all there!

Jason Groth
