Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Black Sabbath's self-titled 1970 debut has topped a poll of the best British rock albums, as voted for by Kerrang! readers.

Paranoid makes an appearance too, at number five. Front man Ozzy Osbourne occupies two berths in the top ten with solo records.

High-ranking records also included Iron Maiden's brace of Number Of The Beast and Iron Maiden; Led Zeppelin's fourth album; The Sex Pistol's Never Mind The Bollocks...; London Calling by The Clash; Queen's Sheer Heart Attack; The Holy Bible by the Manic Street Preachers; and Muse's recent effort, Absolution.

Kerrang! bod Ashley Bird remarked: "It's amazing to see so many incredible homegrown albums in one list, and without any of the abysmal fashion bands that currently clog up the music scene."

Ozzy mumbled: "Back then [when they recorded 'Black Sabbath] you'd hear: 'If you go to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair'. We lived in Aston, Birmingham. The only flowers I ever saw were on a gravestone in our local cemetery."

DiS says: "Rock on, rock-pickers..."

*Smile*
Oh well, at least we got number six.

"What is this that stands before meeeeeeeeeeeee..."

The article says:

Of course it's great to see so many homegrown albums in a chart of British rock albums. Fool. Next time it'll be celebrating how many great guitar bands there are in a top guitar rock compilation.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

I feel it's a bit discredited by having Absolution at no.6 and Feeder's Echo Park at No. 25. And a whole lotta Led Zeppelin missing, as well as a load of other bands.

And NO Radiohead because they're not 'rock!' enough for Kerrang. That's a joke - Muse started as a decent enough Radiohead-esque band and then moved more operatic and comedic.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

"Earth Vs The Wildhearts" was in at no. 17. Oh yes.

I have no problem with Muse being in the top 10 at all.

Not that this list is any less pointless than any of the rest.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

led zep 2 should have been in as well.

but i dont mind sabbath winning, they were an awesome band

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Yeah, Zep 2 is much better than 'untitled'
Origin of Symmetry is better than Absolution too, from what I heard.
Paranoid better than BS self-titled, but 'Black Sabbath' has the most f*cked-up stuff on it!

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Muse are like the new Queen - they write extremely overblown, quite pompous stadium rock songs about NOTHING.

I don't hate them as much as I hate Queen, and some of their riffs are pretty good, but the premise is the same.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

I like all three of the Muse albums, don't have as fond memories of Absolution as I do Origin though, I don't know if one is better than the other.

Finally someone else who detests Queen!

"Kerrang, you're a comic book" - Lightyear

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

sabbath bloody sabbath is the best id say

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Their the Smash Hits of the Rock world, fucking doing articles on who has the stupidest tash or how to dress like Aimee Fucking Lee or the Mofo from the LostProphets who think's he's a "playa".
Their all so far up various asses including their own its a wonder they see daylight.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

but they also called Mastodon the best band on the planet , which automatically makes it a lot better than anything like the nme.

still, we all know the best music mags are the monthlys anyway...the features are actually good for a start.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

kerrang is rubbish, but at it occupies a couple of hours on a wednesday. or should that be a a couple of minutes in the shop. either way, its not that bad. and led zep 2 is in the list, but a bit further down. i was a bit dissapointed that iron maidens killers only made no. 44, while things like feeder and lost prophets make up the top 20...

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Almost related... am I the only person who remembers Kerrang giving Muse's Origin of Symmetry one K? People ignored this in their thousands and Kerrang has been referring to it as some kind of modern classic ever since.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Sabotage, but then I'm mentally defective.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

In darkness world stops turninggggggggg
Ozzy laughing spreads his leggggggssssssss

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

How can people not like Queen? Are you all just listening to the wrong songs? They were great in the seventies...

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Don't trust em. I found a load of back issues in a shop once and one of them called Poison the best band on the planet.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Master of Reality!

The album that launched a bazillion bad 'stoner rock' bands.

And a few good ones.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

i thought it got 3 or 4 and made it onto the end of year best of list ... im not sure though, cos i really didnt like muse before absolution

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Heaven and Hell!

That's contradicting what I said above, but who cares? I'm trying to be as contrary as possible.

Born Again!
Headless Cross!
Forbidden!

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

you like Gary Numan, you can't seriously expect us to take your opinion about music seriously can you?

Queen - Second worst band of the 80's (after Duran Duran)

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

I said seriously twice in that sentance. So I must be serious.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Errrrrrrrrrrm... Origin of Symmetry either got 4 or 5 stars I think...

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Yes I can.

I wasn't talking about the eighties. I was talking about the seventies. Different thing altogether.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

US 80's 90's, 70's 20's.

Shit music is shit music.

I'm slightly drunk, so ignore me.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Maybe I was hallucinating.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Muse have never sounded *that* much like Radiohead. I prefer the other comparison I used to hear - Jeff Buckley fronting Rage Against The Machine.

Nice to hear The Wildhearts got in... they're a darn sight more rock than fucking Feeder.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Three words why Ozzy got kicked out of Sabbath:

Never. Say. Die.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

What's wrong with Gary Numan...he had two good songs...Sugababes knew that...

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Absolution is far better than Origin. Mainly because they don't sound like Radiohead anymore (cept S4A, thats shite). I can live with Sabbath at the top. Not a fan but I've a lot of respect for what they did.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

4 K's definately.
Although it was reviewed by Dom 'KKKKK! Best album eva!' Lawson so it's probably not that good.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Oh dear yes. Technical Ecstasy was a bit dodgy, but Never Say Die was just horrible. Apart from a couple of minutes of lounge jazz it's unlistenable.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Queen 2nd worst band of the 80s?...hmmm

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Sabbath first album is rightly number 1, my favourite zeppelin is how the west was won...but i guess thats not really an 'album' otherwise that is the best

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Having glanced at this briefly in the newsagents', it's nice to see that however crap the magazine gets, Kerrang readers still fondly remember Baby Chaos (Love Your Self Abuse in the nineties somewhere - yay).

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

When I watched a 'best of' selection of Sabbath videos once each one had a different singer. Dio wasn't so bad actually.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Dio was great. Heaven and Hell is a cracking album. At least as good as some of the classic Ozzy stuff.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Just heard Towers Of London are supporting Black Sabbath on the main stage at Donnington this year. God thats got to fuck you cunts off at bore in sound.

Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks

Word.

A fine album.
