Union Chapel to close for gigs
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver December 14th, 2004
No more shall we be able to gaze skywards at the heavens above us while beautiful music fills the cold stone walls around us - next month The Union Chapel will close its doors to gigs.

The Chapel - at the top end of Upper Street in Islington, London - has hosted too many great shows to list here, but how about Bjork, Beck and Nina Nastasia for three? Internal and external pressures have been blamed for making its gig-related operations unviable. It had hosted gigs since 1992.

Confirming that the Chapel would close as a venue, for both music and art, a spokesman for the Union Chapel Project told reporters:
"It is with great regret that the directors of Union Chapel Project announce that UCP will be closing at the end of January 2005. UCP will therefore no longer be accepting bookings thus ending over thirteen years as a popular, award-winning, contemporary, international music and arts venue".

The final nail in the coffin was a ban on the consumption of alcohol within the Chapel's main performing space, making it a far less attractive venue for potential tours and exhibitions.
