Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Word on the street is that zombie rock heroes Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster have been released from their label, Universal Records.

The five-piece released two LPs in their time at the big boys, including a bunch of corking singles.

In similar news, it seems that Welwyn Garden City trio The Subways (pictured) have gone the other way and signed to Warners. The ‘blues-fried fuzz-distortion chaos-sex-rock' lot released a debut single ‘1am’ earlier this autumn and came to public attention when appearing unsigned on the Other Stage at Glastonbury this summer.

Fickle world, isn’t it?

it will be jj72's...sorry, the subways time in two years as well - the answer is - NEVER sign to a major - when will they learn!

80s will be back without going away!!

They have a huge fanbase so maybe they'll sign to a smaller label who actually care about them!!

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

i really like the 80's matcbox, they'll be back. the subways from welwyn...thats one of the most depressing place i have been too, nearly as bad stevenage or luton.

Major labels confuse me. They delay the new 80s Matchbox album by like, what, six months? They release three singles from it before it comes out, in a time when the singles market is dead on its feet, and then finally release the album and then... drop the band.

Frankly, no wonder a lot of them are bleeding money from every angle. Ridiculous.

just fucking crazy

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

the subways are shit anyway.

The Matchbox are way too good and actually genuinely 'cool' to fold now. I'm sure smaller labels would be willing to snap em up. I always think Fierce Panda for some stop gap releases when bands get dropped.

Least they'll be free of those big boy shackles.

So a band that doesn't deserve a deal has got one, and a great band has lost one.

Pfff. Thank God it's Friday.

I read somewhere that the 80s Matchbox werent allowed by Universal to tour overseas until they had a 'proper' hit in the UK, so I can only hope that maybe this will mean that I can soon enjoy the apparant splendour of their live shows.

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Universal fucking BATTERY FARMED the Matchbox. They toured within an inch of their lives and had about two days off in the entirety of the time they were signed. I remember seeing them at Frog about six months ago and thought they looked jaded. Of course they'll be back, providing that Universal's lawyers don't have them in a financial stranglehold.

Can you imagine them having a 'proper' hit, anyway? If you want proper hits, don't sign a band that sounds like a pack of wolves dissecting Lux Interior's blackblooded corpse in a transylvanian graveyard at midnight.

Sign McFly.

Anyway, good luck to 'em.

"a pack of wolves dissecting Lux Interior's blackblooded corpse in a transylvanian graveyard at midnight. "

amazing!!

FUCK MAJOR LABELS!!!!

NEVER SIGN TO THEM!!!

THEY WORK IN NUMBERS AND FIGURES NOT SONGS!!!

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

actually knowing them, I can say that they could barely play or write a song before they signed to universal, they got their deal based on 'buzz' and their great live shows.. they may have been farmed but at the same time they wouldn't exist in the way they do if they hadn't had the opportunity of that sort of money. So they have certainly benefitted lots from their time on a major.

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Well, their a&r guy did sign Busted too.

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

wank. i predicted this in the next band to be dropped thread. i didnt want it to come true!!!!!!!!!

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Hey, Stevenage isn't too bad, I live there... sure, there's nothing going on in the town itself but it's near enough to other places (!) and there's plenty going on in Hitchin and in Welwyn - Redmaxx, the Otters, the $ell-Outs, Shard, My Pet Junkie, Frog Stupid - we have a diverse lot of bands waiting to follow the Subways out of here and who are happy to be part of this local scene. "80s Matchbox have been dropped"

*Does celebration dance|*

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

i dont buy this "never sign to a major" stance. I know that in many cases it is inappropriate but the subways are very conducive to mass-marketing and it will allow them a career that so few independents could afford to support. Its all about money isnt it if that what they want i wish them luck- they've got a chance- and tey'll have fun

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

JJ72??? Are you a retard or really thick? When will you learn never to open your mouth and embarrass yourself, I tell you what though that Il divo they don't half sound like the white stripes............

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Oh no this band hasn't got the mass appeal of radiohead and rem i can't listen to them, they make me want to cry i need my dads music, Ive shit my pants MUMMMMMMMMYYYYYYY

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

They the music choice for peadophiles and sadists

Re: Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

I'd sign to a major label if I had the chance, I'm such a sell-out. Grab the money and run!

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Good luck to Warner if they've signed The Subways (they'll need it!). Female bass player couldn't sing a note in tune if her life depended on it! It's all been done before, and better. Music industry, where the fuck are you at? - backwards by the looks of it. My prediction is in 6 months time - rip off another band and get signed!!!

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

What's wrong with major labels, the Sex Pistols signed to EMI (alright they were dropped for being to controversial) and then then next biggest label until they hit Virgin.

They might of only had one album but it was probably one of the most important albums of all time, they where pioneers of a genre with countless bands basing themselves/drawing inspiration from them since.

Matchbox fuse as Subways go overground

Its a bit crap that 80's Matchbox have been released. They'll be back though so I'm not worried. Oh well at least the subways are doing well, They Fuckin Rule! And thier bassist is bloody fine!
