Everyone's favourite Scotsmen Idlewild have revealed more details about their forthcoming album #4.
Scheduled for release on 7th March the follow-up to 2002's The Remote Part is to be called Warnings/Promises. That's all the information we have at the mo', but in his most recent diary entry on the band's official site, frontman Roddy Woomble has described it as 'ragged' and 'noisy', so chances are it's going to be monumental!
The LP will be preceded by a single, entitled 'Love Steals Us From Loneliness', on 21st February.

am i the only person who is a little apprehensive about this new album after the bland mess that was "remote part". with so many new scottish indie abnds to contend with (sons&daughters etc) whether they sink or swim only time will tell.

Hopefully. I liked things like 'You Held The World...' and 'The Remote Part' but there's only so much of 'American English' and 'Live In A Hiding Place' I can take before I run for 'Hope Is Important' or 'Captain'.

hopefully he doesnt mean ragged and noisy in a snowpatrol sense of the word ... i definately prefered the rockers on remote part - nothing wrong with the odd slow/mellow track but too many could be a bit of a shame

I wouldnt really mind another album like the remote part, it wasnt that bad, the production let it down though.

why does noone like the quiet the remote part songs? They're gorgeous. Just cos a band start out doing utterly noncommercial appallingly produced comedy punk doesnt mean they have to forever. I think the more r.e.m inspired stuff is really cool.

Hi I've actually had a listen to the new album and I have to say it's very disappointing. I really liked The Remote Part and thought it was a good change from the thrashed sound of their earlier albums, so I wouldn't have minded that much if their new one sounded similar. But Warnings/Promises doesn't sound like the Remote Part or the Earlier Albums. Instead it's very influenced by old folk music which had the effect of making the whole thing sound bland and unoriginal. There's not a single song on the album I really like: even when there are some promising bits the majority will leave you disappointed.
Sorry but this album is not loud and is only 'rugged' in the sense that not enough work went into songwriting.

i'm listening to the new record now, and i really like it. there's a great deal of variety, and the noisy songs sound nothing like old idlewild. the quieter songs seem better on the first few listens. the guitar work has come on a lot. there are even some very effective backing vocals. i guess this album is going to be divisive, perhaps i'm too much a fan to be critical.
one problem is the band logo, its the worst yet. the original iDLEWiLD was much nicer to look out. the sleeve art on general has gone down hill from the high of 100 broken windows.

Ok I've had the album for a while now, so I'm probably in a position to give a more balanced review compared with my earlier comments. No matter how many times I listen to it though I just can't like it as much as their earlier works. Having said that Warnings/Prmosises had grown on me somewhat.
Some of the loud songs sound too obvious to my ear while the slower songs seem too sentimental. Just know that there's no Scottish Fiction or Tell Me Ten Words on this album. It's not great but maybe repeated listenings will dull the senses enough that you can convince yourself you enjoy it.
