Anyone with a passing knowledge of the Red Bull company could be forgiven for thinking that their raison d’être is, firstly, to sell caffeinated soft drinks and, secondly, to sell more caffeinated soft drinks. Apparently this is not the case. The Red B»
Their Diplo-produced new album Cosmology is out today via Hassle Records. Our 8/10 review is here. The band discuss their new record with DiS' David Renshaw, here.»
Whilst XL, Domino, 4AD, Wichita and others put new acts on the map and control the direction and priorities of the new alternative scene, the major labels look distracted and erratic in their signing policy and approach to new acts. Many of the staff realise the game has changed but no one across the big three is really looking as though they know the rules by which to play. For now, to allow the scenes to flourish and to protect itself from further unwise and costly bad investments the sensible major label should focus on catalogue and known artists. It isn’t a panacea but its a way forward for a group of companies that look to be in serious need of new strategies. »
This week: a plea for more nice things [NO REALLY], whether it is worth being the sixth man on the moon and a mahoosive dose of Good Ache. Also: Giving Up On Going Out With People, But Not Getting All Boo-Hoo About It. Some good advice there. »
Rather than try to "review" all 300+ bands who played The Great Escape in Brighton last weekend, we decided to focus on the best bits. »
Rolo Tomassi are a multi-faceted band. If it’s not the kick ass riffs that grab you then there are wistful, dream like synth interludes and lead singer Eva Spence’s vocals which switch between demonic and angelic with ease. Having released their firs»
Sincerest and most super apologies for a recent deficiency in Spotify playlists. We get all the way to 42 without missing a single one and then BAM! there's only one in three weeks. That's just how these things go sometimes. But we hope we make up for it with this week's varied offering, featuring Crystal Castles, Grails, Tweak Bird, Zola Jesus, Atlas Sound, Toro Y Moi and plenty more for you to get your lugholes round. »
Ahoyhoy. Welcome to the review of the latest installment of ATP, hopefully a little trimmer, words, wise than the behemoths these things have been turning into of late. Brad Barrett and Andrzej Lukowski were the men on Butlins' newly-upholstered ground.»
The essential releases from the recent electronic crop, and a deep, dark techno mix from Japanese DJ/producer Iori. »
Crystal Castles may have lost some of the old romance and enigma, but turns out they’re good enough songwriters to get away with it, at least part of the time. »
This week's dispatch is late because poor old Wend has been Unwell. And though it is not 'unwell' in the Jeffrey Bernard sense, we are going to talk about drunkeness. Also stalking, wisdom, Aladdin lamps and Zoetropes. Yay!»
DiS done got our own little festival! Yes sir, between Friday 4th June and Sunday 6th we'll be taking over our favourite Sheffield establishment The Harley for an entire weekend of live music - curated in partnership with the venue - and we're absolutely delighted to announce who and what we've got in store for you.»
With Christina Aguilera recruiting various indie luminaries for her next album and Gaga releasing nine-minute long videos and strapping cigarettes to her face, this should be the perfect time for Kelis to snatch back a chunk of the limelight, to demonstrate to these whippersnappers how to rip pop apart and put it back together with just the right amount of crackpot ideas and outlandish presentation. Instead, Kelis has headed in the other direction and gone for some relatively straightforward mainstream glory at a time when 'straightforward' is looking like a creaky, outmoded concept in the pop world. »
DiS didn’t actually really meet She & Him this time round, but we did get the chance to send Zooey some questions.»

Twenty-four hours ago I couldn’t have told you the last time I was caught in a mosh, as I couldn’t remember. Million Dead’s see-ya-later show at the Underworld, maybe. Today, I can: last night, ULU, Deftones. Me, friends never before met and never t»
The honour of curating the first ATP of 2010 went to Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and despite it not being the busiest of ATPs in terms of punters, or brightest in terms of sunshine, no one can have many complaints about this year's line-up or the subsequent performances enjoyed over the course of the weekend.»
We caught up with the band a few weeks ago for a chat. We even asked some harsh-ish questions from boards. »
Ace historical themed post-rockers iLiKETRAiNS have just finished touring Europe with Editors. Having already enlightened us with Part 1 of their exploits, here is the second part of the band's tour adventures...»
Brighton is quite a small place, really. You won’t need to get a bus to anywhere, or a taxi… unless you’re hammered. Here are a few places you need to know about during the Great Escape weekend. Bookmark this page in your i-phone* and impress your f»
Even though this is a fine, fine record, a really very good album without an awful track or even the hint of a real mis-step, it never quite matches the ragged rush of Sound Of Silver.»
Ahead of their hometown headline show on the DiS stage at the Great Escape, DiS asked Steven from Blood Red Shoes to share his local knowledge and suggest some places to visit during the weekend's festivities. »
