TIME OUT Feb 25th – March 3rd 2004
The Belles – Omerta (Eat Sleep)
Inspired by the landscape surrounding them, Kansas duo The Belles create wide-open, dusty anthems of languid melancholy. Blending the restrained yet potent harmonies favoured by the Pernice Brothers with simple, frills-free Americana, ‘Omerta’ is a bittersweet gem of tranquil indie pop. Truly beautiful. Chris Parkin

The Belles
Omerta (Eat Sleep)
(4 of 5 stars)
If you're mourning Elliott Smith (and you also liked The Lemonheads), you could well find the consolation you seek in The Belles. Christopher Tolle and Jake Cardwell expose their Kansas roots with beautiful wide-open arrangements and organic riffs on this, their debut album. With songwriting and acoustics as tender as they are potent, and some inspired hooks, these boys are quite a discovery. Out on 15 March.
