Seriously Groovy: Supporting The Scene For Nearly A Decade!
The label was formed almost nine years ago (it'll celebrate its birthday in March 2004) by two likeminded music lovers, Dave Holmes and Lorraine Snape, who had a plan. Their mission was simple, and remains the same today:
"To search out extraordinary new recording artists and work with them to produce the most influential alternative sounds."
Now, many of you will be thinking, "Well, who the hell have you given to the world?", and it's a fair question considering the label, based in Soho, have a less than global profile. However, their current and past roster is one that makes you seriously consider their validity to their mission. Currently home to London's Jet Johnson and Econoline, Boston-based Emetrex and Finnish oddities Mother Goose, their roster is hardly jam-packed with artists, but the emphasise is on quality rather than quantity, something that certainly can't be said of bigger labels with more artists than sense. Retrospectively, you just have to look at some of the artists the label gave their initial breaks to, such as Sludgefeast (now releasing through Must Destroy), mo-ho-bish-o-pi and Inhaler, to see one thing that helps this label out more than anything: musical genre is not restrictive!
Some labels are specialists in one particular field. Think Peaceville, Roadrunner and Better The Devil for example, all of whom focus on only one particular area, and subsequently do it very well. Imagine, however, how many demos these labels receive, to which they've responded "Yeah, it is quite good, but not really for us!", and have later rued that decision? More than once I'm willing to bet!
One other band the label picked up early on in their career was a small band from Wales called Best. The label took to calling the band's no-fuss style as 'No-fi', and took a risk by releasing their debut single, 'Huwuno'. One name change and a bout of label-hopping later (they're now signed to Too Pure), and Best have become one of the best damn bands the UK has to offer, although you'll know them better as McLusky.
Come the new year, the label will inevitably progress even further, trying out new bands while always sticking to their ethics of releasing great music by special bands just needing the break. A new album is expected from Econoline, and a Seriously Groovy showcase gig at the ICA is in the pipeline, featuring the entire roster. While the likes of Domino receive the plaudits deserved to them, just remember that there are other, often much smaller and regularly overlooked labels who are working just as hard to keep the scene alive.

maybe that's why Domino gets the kudos and S.G gets ignored? Lawrence Bell is a good guy who's good to his artists.
Re: Seriously Groovy: Supporting The Scene For Nearly A Decade!
Every record label needs to find their feet. Perhaps in the beginning SG hadn't, and bit off more than they could chew, leading to all the nonsense you've heard about. Then again, I don't know. What I do know is that two of the bands who claimed to have been dealt a bad hand expected too much from a tiny label, and subsequently got on their high horses and rode off to pastures new, without paying their dues first. Where are Mo Ho Bish O Pi now, eh? Down the crapper.
To give tiny indie labels that do nothing but promote music that they're touched in some way by a bad rap without even knowing them is out of order. Gossip is just that. Until you've tried running a label yourself I don't think you're (and I mean the generic 'you' - if you've run a label/still do, then maybe you're in a better position than me to comment) in any position to dis' a label that works really hard for its artists, and always puts them first. Would a band like Jet Johnson, who had released through numerous indie labels prior to working with SG, have chosen them if they didn't put the music first and give them a good deal? Gavin's been in the business long enough to smell a stinker. Incidentally, 'Micropolitan' is a wonderful album; get it for Christmas.

Mclusky seem to represent a particularly odious type of "indie" band who are as career climbing as any major label act. If you want to dispute this then fine, I'm up for the debate. But they signed contracts with SG, probably blindly in the search to further themselves. They then counter signed contracts elsewhere that directly conflicted with the first one. Tough shit. I stood and listened to the guy from Mclusky bad mouth SG to me when I supported them. He told a different story to the one Dave and Lorraine told me. It seems the sum total of their punk rock-ness amounts to having been recorded by Steve Albini - who operates a pretty tight business himelf in that you pay him to record you and he does. Got me?
And Domino has perhaps got where it is today by the alliance it has with Drag City in the US so that any US release on DC is optioned here by Domino. So Domino has Will Oldham and Papa M. Its by default. Their success doesn't seem to come from the UK bands they signed at any rate - Pram, Movietone etc. Good bands but I am sure the money to sign Franz Ferdinand (the most the label ever put forward so I am led to believe) didn't come from the Pram back catalogue. So whoever made the comparison between SG and Domino should stop being so naive. The only problem SG has is maintaining a balance between indie ethics and business sense and not having enough cash to be flippant about the balance like Domino maybe can.
If you want to rip on SG for anything then rip on Dave for playing guitar for Keith Chegwin.
