DiS is taking a veritable troupe of badness down to Brighton in just a few days to frolic in the surf and eat whelks and other minging seafood. The task in hand is to see at least three bands at the Great Escape – part of the Brighton Festival Month.
Handily, you will find The Drowned In Sound Top SIX Bands To Go Rock Out To just below to help YOU see more than three bands over the three-day festival. How amazing?? Yes, quite. Additionally, there are all also all the details you’ll ever need to check out all your favourite Drowned in Sound Recordings bands.

DiS @ The Great Escape!!!
The Cooper Temple Clause + Komakino + Jeniferever + Howling Bells + Les Incompetents
Friday 5.30 - 11pm @ The Zap
Forming the start of The Cooper Temple Clause's UK tour, this special intimate show is the place to be on Friday night. DiS will be there in force with our Bella Union-based friends Howling Bells, Swedish signees Jeniferever, our delightfully off-kilter Londoners Les Incompetents and the ever-excellent rock stylings of Komakino. Ace!
Thursday 10pm @ The Hanbury Ballroom
Martha has been beavering away at her second LP, but breaks her workload for a short UK tour and this date in Brighton. At SXSW in March, she played an impressive set, considering her inebriated state, so let's hope for more of that, eh?
Friday 8.30pm @ Beach
DiS Recordings' newest signings, Canada's Metric play this MTV2 event. Their rock-on-electronic-on-pop movements are making waves and starting raves. Catch 'em now before they go stellar.
The Gossip + Metric + Shy Child
Friday Midnight - 5am @ The Beach (Adventures Close To Home)
Adventures Close to Home put on some of the coolest clubs in London town, so why not do the same in London-on-Sea? Another chance to catch Metric as well as overseas imports The Gossip and Shy Child.
Bat For Lashes
Saturday 7pm @ Spiegel Tent
Having recently released Bat's debut single as part of our digital singles club, she brings her Cocorosie/Kate Bush magnificence to big tent. This is a good thing, and if you don't go, you're some sort of loser.
The Drowned In Sound Top SIX Bands To Go Rock Out To!!!
#1 Disco Ensemble
Thursday 9pm @ Engine Rooms
Saturday 9.45pm @ Concorde 2
Despite being championed on this site for almost a year now, Disco Ensemble still do require an introduction. Their astonishing live show makes you reminisce of the halcyon days where At The Drive-In and Refused were the staples of your punk rock diets and, accordingly, the energetic Finns are performing twice at the festival. This weekend marks the beginning of a short but inevitably hectic tour with longstanding DiS faves, 65daysofstatic. This is the one band you don’t want to miss.
#2 Holy Fuck
Thursday 9pm @ Ocean Rooms
Thursday midnight @ Pav Tav (downstairs)
This Canadian mega-group ply an interesting trade of organic electronica where they shun all usage of laptops, pre-programmed backing tracks in favour of Real Instruments with Real Soul creating experimental improvised songs where not even they know what will happen. They, of course, have the sole intent of making the crowd and themselves go absolutely nuts. Also playing twice, others also seem to expect big things from the indie instrumental dance-rockers.
Friday 7.45pm @ Concorde 2
Somehow this band only managed to provide the second heaviest track on the DiS Radio ROCK Show but Gojira’s ferocious blend of death metal, heavy-as-fuck riffery and long-haired Gallic charm has proven to be an amazing prospect in the live arena. This is a chance to see what all the fuss has been about before they set off on a micro-sized tour with Obituary in June.
Saturday 8pm @ Ocean Rooms
Saturday 11pm-3am @ Concorde 2 (Don’t Look Down Club)
You can call them part of the nu-Dischord movement (?) if you like but nothing will take away from the fact that Dartz! are one of the most exciting lo-fi punkers that DiS has come across in a long time. They may only seem to have one amazing song but boy, oh boy, it’s more than enough to knock your socks off and then you’ll cut your feet, dancing on the pavement. You’ll just have to trust me when I say it’s all about the club night.
#5 Spleen United
Thursday 7pm @ The Albert
I caught these Danes at the Eurosonic Festival earlier this year and they totally blew me away. Spleen United’s smouldering experimentation with dirty electro beats leaves a sharp taste in your mouth as they rock out and then synth down. Their songs also take a very long time to get going and then take even longer to finish. Prog this ain’t.
#6 Still Remains
Friday 9.45pm @ Concorde 2
The American metallers are taking in a date here as part of their first UK headline tour. Mixing the modern style of metalcore with the retro style of keyboard-infused pop, Still Remains fire away with soaring emo choruses and the eeriest disco tracks this side of Indiana. Definitely worth checking out if this is not your usual cup of tea.
Also keep an eye out for… 3hostwomexicansandatinofspanners, 65daysofstatic, Battle, Buck 65, Devil Sold His Soul, Exit Ten, Johnny Truant, Mumm-Ra, The Scare, Sereena Maneesh, Sign, Tahiti 80, This Et Al, Jeremy Warmsley, You Say Party! We Say Die!
Some of the words in this article are by Colin Roberts, but only the crap bits.
