DiS' Class Of 2009 #4: Data.Select.Party

DiS' Class Of 2009 is comprised of bands our core contributors really think you should be listening to. Simple as. We're not necessarily saying they'll 'blow up' or 'cross over' or any of that industry nonsense, but we are saying we think they're great and have a hunch at least some of you will agree...
Data.Select.Party
What do you get if you cross a Tortoise, a (Minus The) Bear, a Foal, and, um, a JEW [Jimmy Eat World - Political Correctness Ed]? There's no punchline to this amalgam, but on hearing the shimmering clatter of Data.Select.Party we're left trying to piece it all together. Sure, D.S.P have the dumb fun of the mid-90s SoCal punk scene and jump in and out of the glum shadow cast where hardcore meets emo, but at the same time they have clever-clever time signatures and fractured breakdowns which hint that their record collections may not be too dissimilar to those of Yannis and co. Perhaps that hint of something sophisticated hiding beneath the melodious surface was why your usually cynical and bar-area-dwelling scribe felt fine joining the punching-of-air and circle pit swill down the front on catching them at In The City towards the latter part of 2008. Call it math-pop, call it Top-Shop art-rock - call it what you want - but I'll bet my favourite black skinny jeans on the fact that this lot will be all over daytime radio and sneaking their way up festival bills and onto the T-shirted chests of those around you before the year is out.
- Debut mini-album 'Hanging Out With Humans' is released on February 23rd via Fear & Records (Rolo Tomassi/I Was A Cub Scout/Emmy The Great). The band tour with Colour in February.

don't really like it...
...at all.
hey pedantic pants
they manage them and they're all over their website http://fearandrecords.com/ and I didn't say they released them. So nur-nur-nee-nur-nurgh!
Sorry
but how the fuck can you mention Tortoise in the same breath as that?
ugh
Catchy, but sickening - typical trying too hard do I look cool in these jeans modern day 'indie'
I'm surprised these were picked.
Ive just listened to another of their songs and it sounds like bad dartz
are you kidding?
DSP are gonna be band of the year in 2009.
they need to rehearse
obviously
I'll bet this lot will be my favourite black skinny jeans
based on the fact that they will be all over daytime radio ?
no no no no.
They let you use that? That performance was awful. I also severely doubt they have any fela kuti or monolake in their record collection(as per the foals reference). I cannot believe DIS are putting their weight behind this band, they've been around for years now and have never put anything of note. Big Bleh!
I think I first saw these guys play mid-2007
Bit late with the tippage.
yeah me too.
i saw florence in 2006, what's your point?
I knew I'd get a dickish, pseudo-aggressive reply
My point was, rather harmlessly, that these guys have been tipped by various online zines for the past 2 years. It wasn't an attack.
I think I saw these guys late last year
Do they sound just like The Foalz?
No
Thanks. Not really doing much for me.
Can't believe how good DSP's new album is
Tour for new album going to be sick. All tracks good enough to be singles.
