DiS' Class Of 2009 is comprised of bands our core contributors really think you should be listening to. Simple as. We're not necessarily saying they'll 'blow up' or 'cross over' or any of that industry nonsense, but we are saying we think they're great and have a hunch at least some of you will agree...
Data.Select.Party
What do you get if you cross a Tortoise, a (Minus The) Bear, a Foal, and, um, a JEW [Jimmy Eat World - Political Correctness Ed]? There's no punchline to this amalgam, but on hearing the shimmering clatter of Data.Select.Party we're left trying to piece it all together. Sure, D.S.P have the dumb fun of the mid-90s SoCal punk scene and jump in and out of the glum shadow cast where hardcore meets emo, but at the same time they have clever-clever time signatures and fractured breakdowns which hint that their record collections may not be too dissimilar to those of Yannis and co. Perhaps that hint of something sophisticated hiding beneath the melodious surface was why your usually cynical and bar-area-dwelling scribe felt fine joining the punching-of-air and circle pit swill down the front on catching them at In The City towards the latter part of 2008. Call it math-pop, call it Top-Shop art-rock - call it what you want - but I'll bet my favourite black skinny jeans on the fact that this lot will be all over daytime radio and sneaking their way up festival bills and onto the T-shirted chests of those around you before the year is out.
- Debut mini-album 'Hanging Out With Humans' is released on February 23rd via Fear & Records (Rolo Tomassi/I Was A Cub Scout/Emmy The Great). The band tour with Colour in February.
