After many experienced download problems on the launch of new Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I – IV’s yesterday, it seems the release has proved popular, the $300 ultra-deluxe ltd edition package already selling out.

2,500 editions of the package, pictured above, were made available. Each includes a four-LP set of each of the first four volumes of Ghosts on 180 gram vinyl as well as three fancy books containing two audio CDs, remixable session files for all 36 of the release’s tracks and other exclusive extras (all signed by Trent Reznor).

So, 2,500 x $300 = $750,000, (roughly £377,441). Not a bad haul for Reznor, and that’s only the most expensive of the options available. Find others here, or, if you prefer, read the story we ran yesterday.

fuck

fair play

that boxset looks sweeeet. and the whole set 9 songs free, the rest you pay for thing is a better idea than the guilt trip that was the niggy tardust initiative. why the fuck would someone pay for 320 when 192 is more than enough... and free.

I did..

5 dollars seemed like a more than reasonable price to pay for an album/ some money actually went to an artist i appreciate. I'm not an audiophile but i like to pay artists for the music they create...

no no, i agree

it was just the way it was like "hey have it for free if you like - assuming you don't want to support the artist". bit of a guilt trip. but at the same time it was very cool to have done it like that.

but honestly? why would most pay for that? if you can get a 192kbs file for free, which is a damn good quality, then why would you jump for more afterward? you needed to download the 192 if you were not a fan or if you hadn't heard Saul before, so after that why go back and get a bigger version of the same thing? thats all i mean...

Its like someone offering you an upgrade option on your 14 inch cube TV to a 40 inch a normal plasma for free or go for a plasma HD for a cost. what would you do? i'm sure i'd replace my 20 inch cube with a free no-HD plasma! and i think a lot of other people would too.

anyway, just my take. still think its exciting that these people are taking this jump. I actually even think 5 bucks is a bit low from a business point of view, especially when you consider that iTunes makes shit loads of sales off a 192kbs album at 9.99 USD.

aha yeah..

i agree; there isn't much incentive to go back and actually pay for it if you'r trying it out/ 5dollars is a bit low for a full albu (be it a purely digital release)
I'v never been really into NiN but i admire the way they'v done this, it seems lot more structured (perhaps learning from the saul williams attempt, i mean they seem to work together a lot). It certainly seems like a good template from which established artists could release their stuff..

and

just to be clear, i'm on about general consumers and the nature of consumerism and not people that have clear morals on the "free music" issue. i personally think that its great that people paid for Saul's record and Radiohead's for that matter.

In both cases, personally, I would at least liked a chance to stream a track or 2 (or all?) to know what i was getting if I was gonna pay for it? You can listen to a CD in a record shop before you pay for it to decide if you want to part with your cash.

Which is why i reckon the 9 tracks free, rest you pay for idea is better. obviously you have to try and test these things before they become apparent, i understand that (though did think it at the time).

!!!!!!!

jeeeez!

fuck

paying for that.
is this a record?
or just some mixable tracks?

I think it's fair enough

It works out at £150-odd and - as i said yesterday - if that were a Mars Volta release i'd pay that for it. There'll be alot of happy fans.

I'm contented with the double CD and around £5 for a 2CD, 36 track release is a bargain. No complaining in this camp

must

get this tonight!!

Rez what a legend!!!

I nearly bought the $75 release

But after some soul searching I decided I didn't really need the blu-ray disc and the mix disc, so plumped for the $10 double cd which as you say is a bargain.

I've listened to Ghosts I and it sounds pretty good.

Coincidentally after this I went and downloaded the Saul Williams record for $5 and heard a fair bit of Trent on that, I didn't know he'd contributed!

shit......

I was persuading myself into buying the £150 version thinking that I'd have more than one day to think about it!

I bought the $5 download yesterday but the damn thing didn't download. There was a note on the NIN site saying they had huge traffic and there may be problems. Hopefully my e-mail to the NIN customer support wont get lost in industrial cyber space.

I think everyone needs to realize that the gothed up tits Camden and the intimidating name really dont represent what NIN is all about. Everyone time I play NIN to a friend or at work people are just like 'WHO IS THIS?' and are completely surprised as its not what they expected to hear.... basically what I am saying is that if you dont like NIN, it's probably because you have pre-conceptions created by the the ugly fans (I Definitely did!). I know this sounds like me being a cunt but it's my honest opinion on why I think a lot of people (even on a muso site like DiS) turn blind eye to such talent.

Trent is a don... less than a year after releasing Year Zero he has produced Saul Williams album, released a re-mix album and now brought out a 36 tracks album in an exciting form of delivery.

mega thumbs up

I actually agree with you.

About people making pre-conceptions based on their name. I haven't heard many NIN tracks, March Of The Pigs is good though. I remember telling my friend that I liked that song when I first heard it and the reaction was a bit WTF, without actually saying it. I could tell what they were thinking though.

CC FTW

The entire thing is CC-BY-NC-SA–licensed, meaning you're allowed to share it (and do other stuff with it too).

This means that getting a torrent of the whole thing for free from The Pirate Bay (for example) is not illicit.

*This* means that people like me, who weren't fans of and/or hadn't knowingly heard any music by NIN, can become fans of NIN.

Giving music away for free works.

(Also, fans of the whole ambient/soundscape style should know about Kahvi Collective: http://kahvi.org – their stuff is all CC-licensed too.)
