Smashing Pumpkins** fans out there? Missing those hedonistic days of the mid nineties where Corgan and co. used to knock out radio friendly ballads? Well, fear not, here's the latest Razorlight single... no really... 'Somewhere Else_' sounds like the perfect amalgamation of 'Tonight Tonight' and 'Disarm'. You couldn't make it up.

That musicologist-friendly point aside, Razorlight**'s new track - the first fruits post 'Up All Night' is a very serviceable string-drenched ballad where Borrell extorts his desire of "I wish I could be somewhere else" over a slice of ego-friendly sampled roaring crowd. Written somewhere in a San Antonian desert in the middle of his much-discussed breakdown-cum-headfuck? Maybe, or perhaps it's another piece of Johnny's admittedly excellent roleplaying abilities. Who knows?

Something new from something very old, then.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

It just sounds like a poorer, radio-friendly poppier version of 'Dalston', what with the crazy build up and the tiny breakdown etc.
I know i should have expected it, but when nme rates this as single of the week over the Arcade Fire you must wonder what they see in this band.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

set for number 1 apparently.

gotta love the "she asked me my name, i told her what it waaaaas". er, well done mate.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I thought it sounded like a pish version of 'Rat Trap'.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Thank God someone else noticed the Boomtown Rats in there!
I was thinking of 'I Don't Like Mondays' myself.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Don't stone me to death over this, but I don't hate this song at all.

It's, y'know, alright.

*ducks*
*runs*
*reallyreallyfast*

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

As a work of derivitive unimagination, it's actually quite nice and listenable

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Totally.
It's just 'nice', y'know.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Is this the song that Borrell said was a bit like George Harrison? He said something about new material sounding like that. I remember reading that somewhere, possibly here..

Anyway I think that's a bit of a complement.

To George Harrison....

heh.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Is this the band Ulrika Jonnson's in?

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

yes, actually you're right. it's more that one.

one of boomtown rats' only two songs.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I'll call a taxi for you Diver.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Has no-one else noticed how much this sounds like Ocean Colour Scene??! Disturbing. They were always shit, but this is a new low. And yet, I can't get it out of my head. Bastards.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Surely the point was that it sounds like they've *ahem* borrowed from the Pumpkins? that's not defaming them, nor is the statement that the SPs used to write top radio hits. Like it or not, they did...
xg

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Alot of these London 'Scene' bands do sound like Ocean Colour Scene. I've said that before!

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I like this record.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

dude, thats generous.
its jut fucking LAME.
in every way.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Well isn't that something to do with the fact that Arcade Fire aren't releasing a single this week?

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

The first time I heard it I thought it was okay, but my opinion of it has gone down every time I heard it since. Processing your acoustic guitars to death maketh not a good song.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Come on, even Corgan at his lowest point has never written anything as fucking boring as this.

I seem to come off like I hate The Pumpkins way too much. I don't. Honest. I love them.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I like Razorlight but this is by far their worst moment so far. It all sounds pleasant enough if you don't listen too closely but the lyrics are absolutely horrendous. The bit that makes me cringe most is the 'and you just walked on by'. They should've went for Keep the Right Profile for this single, it's a million times better.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I hate Myself for Quite Liking Razorlight
Its not that I really like them I just think they’re alright
I mean the guy can write a half decent tune
Even though the lyrics are inane
And even though all their songs sound pretty much the same
I mean they’re obviously not about anything much
He’s obviously written them off the top of his head
And the only really good one is Golden Touch
But I can see why they do as well as they do
Because people just want something they can sing along to

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

wow.
dis poetry corner.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I'm crap at Razorlight. I mean, even just then, while typing it, I wasn't sure if I should be typing Razorlight or Razorlite. So. I don't know if the bits in that post that don't rhyme are Supposed to not rhyme as some sort of scything pastiche or not.

Uh.

I'll get my coat.

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

wish i was that clever!

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

Its just so funny that people are embarrassed to like a band (Mike Diver, the guy who did the poem)... I think Razorlight have a damn good album and Somewhere Else is twice as good as any of the shite Bloc Party have squeezed out in the past year.

Razorlight - Somewhere Else

I have to say (well I don't, but I will!) that I am another who likes Razorlight. They seem inoffensive to me especially compared to the horrors produced by Oasis over the years.
They aren't pushing many envelopes anywhere but this is infinitely preferable on the radio to Busted and Rooster.

Although I like Razorlight to say that Somewhere Else is twice as good as anything Bloc Party have put out is risable. BP are truly exciting and certainly are trying to push sounds into new and exciting areas - good on them.

I note that Somewhere Else has been compared to the Boomtown Rats on this thread - am I the only one who think Golden Touch is a direct lift of the Cure's 10.15 Saturday Night riff?

(I claim my prize!)

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

i dont, i just wonder why you bother with nme, its crap and they know bugger all about anything other than wankish bands who shouldnt be signed let alone given publicity

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

That's a rather sweeping generalisation, isn't it?

Re: Razorlight - Somewhere Else

everything!

does that answer your question?
