Electronic Eye Machine

Jesus Song

Label: Crystal Songs Release Date: 25/03/2002

rluckett by Robert Luckett March 28th, 2002

Ask anyone to name their Top Ten songs about Jesus and they'd stare blankly at you and turn up their Seafood album in the hope you'd go away. But Sunderland's newest indie stars, Electronic Eye Machine have come up with a definite contender for that list. Should it ever be made.

'Jesus Song' is as melancholic and sweeping as a debut single has any right to be. From it's gentle lilting opening to it's haphazard bleepy ending, Electronic Eye Machine recall The Flaming Lips at their most affecting or Talk Talk at their most introspective.

'Jesus Song' is quite simply a beautiful, thought provoking record. It's simple questions, "Jesus, what have you done? You've kept me waiting for you to come" genuinely arouse thought on religion in our decidedly non-religious society.

But before this turns into a sociology essay (erm, don't you mean theology? - ed), I'll leave with this thought; Electronic Eye Machine make big, breathtaking anthems in waiting. Who needs Embrace??
