This song is grossly uncool. Clocking in at over six-minutes, it has that horrible, horrible hint of prog rock about it. It almost sounds like Yes. ‘Plug In Baby’ stuck to the Muse formula of having OTT riffs, caterwauling and a chorus which is just the verse only with slightly louder guitars, but nothing prepares you for ‘New Born’. This, my friends, is a very brave choice of single.
What ‘New Born’ does have, however, is the classical tint which made ‘Muscle Museum’ so great. Starting innocently enough with some gentle piano before a hugely distorted and downright dirty guitar kicks in, it then launches into some great bass riffage. After that it’s quite frankly all over the place.
Defiantly pompous and pretentious (sorry to bring up the Radiohead comparison for the 1,000th time), ‘New Born’ is Muse’s ‘Paranoid Android’. I await the ‘Top Of The Pops’ performance with anticipation.

Muse - New Born
And for the record, Newborn sounds like System of a Down! Fuck those radiohead mentions. Muse are more Sonic Youth than Buckley. More Waits than Yorke. More themselfs than anyone who would want to be them.

Live & Kicking
Watch the video of their performance on L&K on youtube. They were all annoyed for having to lipsync so they all just pissed around.
